Chobits is coming up on my radar for an acquisition project and I've been wondering about something. What are the differences between the various releases? There's the original release with the series box and 6 volumes, the two boxset release with 3 volumes each, and the complete collection on 3 disks. There's also the seventh volume/OVA. Since this looks like it could be a fairly expensive project, the series has been OOP for awhile, things like extras are going to matter to me.

At the moment I'm not especially interested in the 3 disk set, so I'm most curious about the other two.

[EDIT: Changed your topic title to be more descriptive. -TK]

If you're worried about expense just wait for FUNi to re-release it.

3 disc set set almost always equals illegal bootleg first of all. Don't trust anything labeled that or "Import" either for that matter. In this case though Chobits was alternatively released in two 2 (3 disc) sets it looks like so if you got one of the sets it would only be half the series so that's another thing to be aware of.

That being said I recommend this one. It should be what I have. 7 Disc, Thinpack which contains the OVAs and adds a bonus of a character song CD. Go for the $49 set and you should be fine.

Expense matters, but in this case it's not my primary concern - it's probably number 2 on the priority list. I'm more concerned about extras that were included on the original releases, and one of the disappointing things about recent Funi re-releases is that they tend to be stripped of all extras, and then there's the sometimes less than stellar packaging.

Sadly, I seem to have become a collector, and these things matter to me. Lately I've been on an artbox binge which is one reason why I'm asking about the original releases.

I've been leery of the 3 disk set, which is one reason why I have no interest in it. The 7 disk thinpack may be an option since all of the artbox starter sets I've found so far have been remarkably expensive. I wouldn't mind having it but I'm not willing to spend hundreds of dollars for it.

The original 6 volumes are still availabe for prices I would probably pay, but only if I could find a series box to put them in. That leaves me with the 2 boxset release with 3 volumes in each, or the 7 disk set.

So, more specifically, my questions are: Are the volumes in the 2 boxset release the same as in the original with different slipcovers and, does the 7 disk set have all the extras that were on the original release? I'm assuming that the original had extras in the first place, of course.

Geneon didn't remove any extras on anything when they were alive as far as I know in fact they added them with the OVAs and the OST on the 7 disc set. That 7 disc set is probabally the only way to to own the OVAs I'm pretty sure they're not on the two half release sets for the show because I remember that being one of the reasons I went with the 7 discer instead of the half series collections years back.

I just looked over on Right Stuf, and apparently they are no longer carrying the single DVD version (with exception of vol. 3 & 4).

About a year or so, they did have them all. I purchased them for about $30 total.

Maybe Amazon?

Anyhow, I am sure when the FUNImation version comes out they will probably keep the bonus stuff. They have so far on pretty much all of the Geneon stuff. BTW usually it is just the same discs, that FUNImation is just re-releasing it under their name (they also have the Geneon logo on them).

I don't recall there being much in the way of extras other than the Chibits OVA and the recap episodes. The UK release by MVM included these on the 6th disc, although the series is OOP here too and FUNi is now sitting on the UK license.

Awesome thread. I learned S&W2 season 2 is coming out (not really surprising but nice to get confirmation since this industry has it's real downtimes) and Chobits on Bluray? I like that idea a lot. I have the 6 volumes release at the moment.

I'll probably promote Chobits to an active acquisition project in the next two or three weeks, though I haven't firmly decided yet which route I'll take. I'll see what shows up in the marketplace in the interim. Everybody's input has been most helpful. Thanks.
