Thank you as always for introducing me to something new!

For something else set in the general region, check out Umi Monogatari / Sea Story, which takes place on and around the Amami Islands and does a nice job of including some interesting local culture without becoming condescending---in fact, the creators do a superb job of adopting the islanders' perspectives as normative and viewing the four main islands of Japan, represented by the school in Tokyo that the main character wants to attend, as the enticing-yet-stereotyped almost-foreign land.
