In every anime I've seen, the very first season opening always has the catchiest music and the best video. In later seasons, the music downgrades and the videos becomes just the characters standing there.
I guess it could just be nostalgia as the first one is the one I remember most usually, or maybe the producers or whatever just get lose their passion for the show later on? |

I think that is usually true, but I wouldn't necessarily say that it is due to pure quality. It could be that by the time that you have established an emotional connection with the show that you are watching, the opening itself has become a symbol of the show in your mind, so when the opening changes, how you view the show and what the opening is are no longer the same so you reject it.

I don't know about that. A lot of the later openings to Pokemon are better than the first one. Battle Frontier, the third Johto, first Advanced, and the latest one for Sinnoh League Victors are better than the first in my opinion. Also, the third OP for Shippudden, Blue Bird, is better than the first, even though the first is still pretty catchy. I'd also Distance, the second OP, is on par with the first.
I don't know how nostalgic you can get, though, for an OP unless it's for a long running Shonen show you've been following weekly since episode 1. Most shows that aren't Bleach, Naruto or One Piece rarely change their OP, and when they do, it's only 26 episode length shows that change it halfway. So I wouldn't say it's nostalgia, it's that you like what you heard first. That's actually kind of a theme in anime watching. For example, the first OP you heard tends to be the best. The language you first heard it in seems to be the best. The first season tends to be the best. And the list goes on. And honestly, I can't agree with this topic either. I know plenty of anime that have openings later on that are superior to the first one, imo. For example, Blood+, Soul Eater, and Gundam 00 right off the top of my head. |

D.Gray-man`s best opening was unarguably its 3rd opening. The 1st one was nostalgic, the 2nd one terrible, and the 4th one pretty decent in its own right, but Doubt & Trust is the song that pops into my head when I think of D.Gray-man.
Inuyasha had a lot of good openings besides the 1st. I`d say that all of them except the 3rd and 7th were better than it. |

I think one reason more thought/effort might be put into some First Openings than later ones (definitely not always the case but let's go with the assumption that it is at least common) is that the first opening is what's used to draw in new viewers. By the time things get switched up, most series will be past the point where someone can come in and watch without having seen what came before it (again, there are exceptions but I am excluding them from this argument).
So it makes more sense to spend more money/devote more time to the opening that will be a solid marketing tool than the ones used later to change things up/mark developments in the story. That being said, I think a lot of subsequent openings are very strong in their own right. My favourite NANA opening is the second one (Rose is good but Wish just is a better song, IMO, and has the best animation as well as actually showing the entire main cast). |

I thought "sign" was probably the great Naruto opening ever, but that's me. This topic doesn't really sit right with me either. There's a lot of songs I can think of that I liked the later ones for more. |

The topic title is simply untrue. There are numerous series where the first OP is not the best. Desert Punk, Bleach, Gundam SEED, Hikaru no Go and Macross Frontier are ones I can think of off the top of my head.
Now, if the thread had been titled "Why is it that the First Opening is Usually the Best?" then it wouldn't be so controversial. |

@ King of Harts...It's not necessarily the first one you heard first. Sometimes it's just almost beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Prime examples of awesome OP1s followed by worse OP2s are Death Note, Rurouni Kenshin, and Full Metal Alchemist. Especially Death Note. It's second opening music was just screamo metal compared to the first song. What were they thinking? lol seriously youtube each pair of those openings and compare them yourselves. |

Okay, Death Note's second OP is kind of a love it or hate it thing. I personally love Maximum the Hormone's music so I loved that song. And if anything "What's Up People" has much more energy in the video than the first OP.
Also, FMA? Really? FMA has to have the most consistent quality OP songs. I don't know if you're talking about the first anime or Brotherhood, but both of them have decent music and videos in their OP songs. |

I suppose its just a sense of taste but I have the same "problem" I often like the 1st Op much more than the later ones. Long running shounen series exempted.
changing the Brotherhood OP was criminal in my opinion theres just no way anything can be better than that. But thats just my opinion. I really cant think of any exceptions all the recent anime I've seen is the same, Toradora, Durarara!! and Soul Eater (im only halfway through though) |

This matter is pretty subjective. There's more than a few anime I can think of where the first opening wasn't the best one.

Not true. Naruto's first opening was complete and utter crap.

Haha, at the time I was like: ... weird eighties music? Huh? But now it gives a very... nostalgic feeling. I get attached to the first opening songs often, so it's hard for me to get used to a new one. |

I'm going to say nostalgia; especially for long running series we saw as kids, like Pokemon. My favorite Pokemon opening is Saikou Everyday, which is one of the recent ones. Naruto as well: Haruka Kanata and Fighting Dreamers are cooler than ROCKS, and for Shippuden, while Hero's Come Back is awesome, I think the best is Closer. Seikon no Qwaser's Baptize is a lot better and more epic than Errand, though Errand is also nice.
Though Soul Eater's Resonance I find better than the second one. |
