Technically, the 'Yamato Cannon' is a throw back to the original StarCraft in which the Terran Battlecruisers had a 'Yamato Gun' attack option. However, the original reference could still be a reference to Space Battleship Yamato as Blizzard has been known to throw in easter eggs to all their games... granted the anime ones are few and far between.

Apparently someone hasn't played the original game from over 10 years ago.

Must be a really slow news day. The Yamato reference has been around since the first Starcraft, and I pretty sure the "old" but "enduring" design bit is just referring to the unit being pretty much unchanged from the first game.
The original Starcraft had some other anime references, like a dead Zentradi the size of a building, but I haven't really found any new ones in the second game.

this... isn't news. The Yamato Cannon has been in Starcraft since 1995 and of course its a Starblazers referance (though the Battlecruiser VA does sound more like Captain Gloval from Robotech)

Wow. Twelve years late on a news story. That has to be a record or something.

What is this nonsense? lol. May be a reference, may not be... but who really knows about it, honestly.
Blizzard has however been known to make references to this kind of stuff. They even added anime/DBZ-esque hairstyles in WoW, and the "over 9,000!!" meme was also added as an achievement in the game.
^ What's more shocking, is ANN bothers posting this, when much bigger, better known anime have been referenced in Blizzard's games.

Definitely an old news. More like ANN way to announce the release of StarCraft 2.
Just sayin'.
Now, figuring how to save money to buy a new rig and this sequel. =3

This wasn't posted as news.

We weren't doing Interest articles 12 years ago. Furthermore, something doesn't become uninteresting just because it's old.

We weren't doing interest articles when those events happened.
If we have readers that may be interested in something, and unaware of it, we will post it as interest. We don't care if it's not new/news. And there's nothing wrong with the article if some of you already know about it as long as other's don't.

Yeah, could be a reference...
But it could also be a reference to WWII Yamato class battleship, famous among other things for being fitted with the largest guns ever for a warship. And the Yamato Cannon from Starcraft sure packs a punch.
Then again Space Battleship Yamato was a reference to Yamato class battleship to begin with...
So we can't know for sure what's made reference to. Maybe both.
If we're ever to know for sure which reference is the good one, we have no way to find out other than tie a Blizzard developer to a chair untill he coughs up

Aww, come on, I found this genuinely interesting. If I'm not mistaken, the Battlecruiser voice in the original game was a reference to Captain Gloval from Robotech: The Macross Saga, as well.

No, the Space Battleship Yamato was built out of the remains of the naval Battleship Yamato from WW2. So they are, in fact, the same ship.

Not just the voice, either. The Captain's uniform and facial hair resemble Gloval to a T. He still LOOKS like Gloval too. Sadly, he no longer sounds like him... -_-
Kyoushinhei: Space Battleship Yamato is the ONLY version of the Yamato that's ever existed with a Gravity Wave Motion gun which is exactly what the Yamato Cannon is. And considering that no OTHER ship named Yamato bears this sort of weapon, it's obvious they mean THAT Yamato. Add to that the afore mentioned Macross reference and the fact that the Macross/SDF-1 has its own version of said weapon, I don't think the reference can be made any clearer than that.
It should also be noted that the Terran's transforming fighter plane is named the Viking. Get it?
