The director's credentials don't look particularly impressive, but I'm salivating just thinking about this.

Ditto, hence why the book sounds more interesting.

Manga seems like the sort of thing I love.

Novel, not manga.

You're probably right, print media certainly has the upper hand in terms of narrative. On the other hand audio-visual media does things that print media can't. The picture I paint in my head from print can't capture my imagination in the same way as the physical representation can.
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and its sequels may have been great books, but they are a different experience than watching the movie Blade Runner. The movie Alien may be a bad example as it was conceived as a movie from the beginning, but it creates a kind of atmosphere that just can't be reproduced in print form.
Cyberpunk noir has the potential to carry over as something quite spectacular cinematically. I'm looking forward to having an experience that is just as much audio and visually wonderful, as it is mentally stimulating. The story might not be as good as it is in the novel, but I'm hoping for a better overall package. It's also clear that I am biased here.

I could always use more cyberpunk. And in novel format? And the novel was published in Japan? Will definitely try to check this out, both for the love of cyberpunk and to support people buying these new-fangled Japanese novels making their way over here

Yes, but Blade Runner was directed by Ridley Scott, not the guy who did Fafner. :p

Sigh. I concede, but I can hope can't I?
