That's too bad for Gonzo, I just wish I could find something from them that I'd like. I buy stuff from Funimation that's not made by Gonzo.

FUNi might want to consider accelerating the release schedule of their GONZO titles before the end comes.

the condition is "grave" if we aren't eating up Rosario+Vampire, Rosario+Vampire 2, Linebarrels of Iron, Strike Witches, Blassreiter, S.A., Dragonaut,.... ?
sorry GONZO, you'll have to do better than 1/5.

I'm sure they'll still retain the rights to whatever Gonzo does after Gonzo gets swallowed up by some company that actauly knows what it's doing in terms of making shows.

What the hell does "grave conditions" mean? What, because we Americans choose not to buy the scant titles released?
Damn, I feel slightly insulted by this remark. Oh well, FUNi and ADV will continue to get my $$$.
Less title offerings means a drop in the DVD market. That's just common sense. Add in streaming websites, and this only adds to the decline.
Another reason why businesses shouldn't solely rely on the DVD market for revenue. It boggles my mind why they continue to do so.

Agree, the last GONZO work I ever bought was Brave Story and before that Gankutsuou, everything else I've seen from GONZO lately has sorely disappointed me.

This is pretty much the reason I don't care about this at all. Gonzo shows always seem to start with an awesome premise, do absolutely nothing with it, then end arbitrarily. In fact I'm secretly cheering the death of GONZO on. If they died off that would hopefully reduce the amount of crap anime on the market and drive sales to people who actually know how to produce quality content.

Well, I'm at least one person who loves Gonzo and wishes them well in this tough economic climate. They're one of my favorite studios, and I think a lot of the bashing they get is completely unwarranted. I haven't been watching Shangri-la, but Saki is coming out pretty darn well this season.
Gonzo needs to stay afloat, because I just can't see Strike Witches S2 being done by a different studio.

If GONZO dies, their titles go with them. If Japanese distributor/rights holder or production committee does pick up their titles, then FUNi would have to renegotiate.

But no less a "name brand" studio than Disney produces many direct-to-dvd titles in any given year.
Look at the last American tv season. The whole industry is in turmoil as peopel aren't behaving as they have for the last 40 yrs. I really believe the studios are going to have to go to an on-demand format over the traditional prime time viewing schedule because viewers aren't watching in the numbers they have been. However, will on-demand still manage the same amount of viewers?
So yes, dvd is a prime income source for many studios. Even the films we see in the theater can be turned from flops into hits in the home market or at least make it to break-even point. When that doesn't happen (break even), we see what Gonzo experienced. I mean, if tv shows make all their money from the commercials & whatnot, why do the companies charge more than $10 for a season of Lost or Smallville? They've made their money. Why would they need more?
They haven't, or the profits from title A can make up for losses in title B.

When the economy turns around and the huge volumes of people that are unemployed are employed once again, then sales for DVDs will pick back up again. They need to re-structure themselves and find out what costs are their biggest cost and eliminate it (their legal costs). Then they can weather the current bad economy and still be around when business picks back up again.

Not necessarily. Remember the whole CPM/Biblos thing. It will really depend on whether Gonzo would be sold, in which case the rights would be retained, or if they would file for bankruptcy and be liquidated. In the case of a liquidation, the new owner of the properties would not necessarily be bound by the contracts with Funimation. They could be thrown out in court, or just be very hard to enforce in general.
Honestly, I don't expect Gonzo to be around much longer in it's current form. Either they will have to be sold, and probably sold soon, or they will simply be dissolved. They spent too much time focusing on growth in North America, while they failed in Japan, so that when the NA market collapsed, they were caught off guard. Despite all their changes, I don't think they've done enough to save themselves.
It's a shame too. Though they haven't done much in recent years that I've enjoyed, they have done some of my favorite series, such as Chrono Crusade and Full Metal Panic.

With Full Metal Panic, I believe that once KyoAni took over the title (with Fumoffu/TSR) they did a better job than Gonzo did.
Speaking of which, KyoAni needs to get around to releasing FMP4, or at the very least, a FMP:Dancing Very Merry Christmas OVA.

I think in this context it means companies closing down or becoming non existent every six months. With less companies entering into bidding wars the price of licenses have probably gone down below a certain limit. If a contract has a royalty clause, and the title doesn't sell, it adds to the damage.
