We've got around 4 more shoot this week to catch up.

Comments are welcomed and encouraged.

I don't really like your guy's thinpack packaging. Every time l buy a funi dvd with that kind of packing all the teeth inside the case, that holds the dvd in place, are chipped off and the dvd inside is just swimming around the case. I like the way you do the packaging for DBZ, how it folds out. But, I kind of wish you adopted the way Bandai did the packaging for the Overman King Gainer Anime Legends Collection.

Just a wild guess: could the title of your column mean that FUNi has licensed / is negotiating a license of this title?

Next we'll see DVD packages floating in a beautiful Norwegian fjord... just kidding. Wink

I agree. Thinkpacks should mean thin DVD cases in a box.

I've never had any packaging from any company ever break or malfunction in any way, and I've got a fair amount of stuff. I think you're talking about the way funimation did their packaging for the GTO, Slayers, Desert Punk and the Speed Grapher box sets? If so, I'm 7/7. Maybe someone at the place where you buy your anime (or your mail carrier) has Parkinson's or anger issues or something.

Lance: You should review the upcoming Samurai Champloo packaging.

Thanks,

Derek

This could be a fluke. The "book" style of my Mai-HiME cracked one of the DVDs because of the design and loose DVD (probably during shipping).

Personally, I wish all these distributors would just pick a format and be done with it. I just hope it isn't the box format. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is worse than seeing 7 DVDs all attached to a single spindle.

I love the thinpaks. This should be the standard.

All my Funimation "two-disc per thinpack" thinpacks have had the DVDs secure save Love Hina, and I just removed the thinpacks inside that one and replaced them with standard thinpacks, so no major loss. So I've never found it to be an issue. If they are scratched, you should be able to return them.

I would like thin packs to be the standard too if all the extras you get with the single volumes would be included as well if singles were out first.

I'm not sure how the packaging relates to the extras.

Wouldn't a thinpak just be widened to accommodate the DVD with the extras, if the distributor is inclined to add them?

ADV did this. Like if a series was released in 6 volumes (SuperGALS, and Excel Saga are good examples of this) the will turn it into a 5 volume set that each disc has one more episode than the singles would have but would not have the extras that come with those discs.

We know about the teeth. That's happened to me as well. We source multiple slip pac packaging vendors, and we are working on not ordering that type of slim ever again.

I really wish you guys would go away from that paper-like box. I just ordered the Kanon 2006 box set and it's got that style. It's my all time favorite series and that box does it no justice. I like the 2 discs per thinpak, but just put them in a sturdier box. Your Fruits Basket thinpak is the perfect box set, in my opinion.

While I'm at it, Slayers, MoonPhase, and Desert Punk are in that flip open set and have their disks laid on top of each other and are REALLY difficult to get the bottom disk out. You have to take out the first one, then take the second one out, and then put the first one back in, that's a little unneeded if you ask me. AnimEigo does it really well their Oh My Goddess OVA where it flips open to one disc per page. I guess they're called pages.

Sorry for complaining so much, but I love the shows you guys distribute and I just want packages that reflect the greatness of the shows.

I agree with you and wish the box that comes with the thinpaks was like the Fruits Basket one.

I also am not a fan of the new Funimation paper box to hold thinpacks. It just doesn't look nice. I'm kinda bummed that Funi went from my favorite artbox producer (Beck, Trinity Blood, Basilisk) to my least favorite. I was disappointed because I wanted an Ouran artbox along the old Funi lines, and was really excited when they announced they had gotten the license. However, by the time Ouran was finally released, Funi had switched to the cheapie paper boxes and while I still love the show, of course, the boxes are just bleh.

I understand Funi not making the super fancy boxes anymore due to cost, but a box along the lines of the Nozomi artboxes (Emma, Maria-sama) would be nice.

Here's another one who doesn't like your boxes. I think they are flimsy and cheap, though they do have nice artwork. I haven't seen the Fruits Basket box, but if it is anything like Rightstuf's boxes, that is definitely what I would like. It's good to see though that you got better cases for Shana. Mine had the cases with the teeth and half of the DVDs were floating in the cases because all the teeth had broken. I was not very happy.

I was going to pick up Slayers, but in light of this information, I will not. I strongly dislike discs that overlap or stack.
