I've never been a fan of either cosplay or chess, but I can't see how combining the two would improve either.
Cosplay bowling would be a more interesting venture I think, albeit one with greater risks involved.

Quote: | If there has been one event on the schedule that has yet to ever start on time, the Cosplay Chess would be it. This time around, it took half an hour before the first move was actually taken. Thankfully the game proved to be quite a one sided affair, ending only a quarter of an hour later. |
I was the player for Team Alpha that day, so I can give you a accurate recount as to what happened there (with the game taking so long to set up that is).
Few problems:
1)The chessboard had gone walk about.
2)Pieces had turned up. And to register for a piece position, cosplayers had to register online. So ofcourse on the day, a few always forget to turn up. This problem always happens and is quickly sovled as there are usually plenty of replacment cosplayers around SupaNova.
Durring the wait, we did try and keep the auidience entertained with various war chants (including some really bad 300 references by myself).
Hope that explains a few things. I can be found at the SupaNova forms under the username "Jericho" if you have any questions.

Now that is how you spice up a game of chess. Did the assorted chants amuse the guests, or was the uneven game itself sufficient?

Lawl.
And the reason for the game been so uneven, you should go track down a certain Poke_Egg and ask him, as I have previously posted else where I'm not going to comment on what happened.
However should I be a player at the SydNova Cosplay chess, I cant promise you a even sided match, though I will look into the "walk about chessboard" idea.

Cosplay Chess still remainds to be one of those games that is more popular with the pieces and the two players than the public. 32 pieces all squished close together talking with excited rabble... it just isn't good entertainment.

The cosplay chess board was larger then the one used in SydNova.
I'll post some pics later, but I dont think they were squished in at all.

It still seems to be missing something to keep the watchers involved and interested though.
Having the crowd enthused at the start is one thing, keeping them interested until the end is another.
The only thing I can think of right now however is to 'grand' it up somehow, whether that be through some more crowd involvement or a bigger stage (like the anime theater).

An overhead projector showing the chessboard maybe?
This could be done, (in theory).

In theory yes, but the practicality of it would have to be looked into. It's likely more feasible to make a proper and larger chess mat than hang a projecter vertical above somewhere (horizontally would have characters blocking the image). It's really more to do with location of the game.
For example, a verticle projectle is downright difficult to set up in the hall where brisbane's game was held due to it never containing any such support there.
Tha anime theatre though likely has places you could fix one, however the fact that the stage is raised means that its almost entirely pointless unless you say have a camera up high projecting the game onto a screen or two somewhere.
