Well, let me see if I can give you a bit more detail about the differences between Robotech and Macross.
I too love Macross, like the last person to post, and think it better than Robotech, but in truth, IMO, the 1st section in Robotech (with Rick and Lisa) is a pretty close retelling of the events in Macross. Plot wise, they are pretty much the same.
Stuff was edited out for the Robotech show, of course, but not a lot, frankly, 2 minutes here, a minute there, that sort of stuff. Minmei has a shower scene (which is actually kinda funny). The edits add up over the 36 eps, they make a difference as sometimes character developing moments had to be cut, like a more vivid portrayal of the death of Ben, but its not a HUGE deal to me. I'm glad the stuff was included, its one more reason I like the Macross set, but not one of THE deciding factors. Still, it's cool to have the complete, honest to god real show.
The biggest difference for me, as a viewer, was that 1) the Japanese voice acting is worlds better in Macross, 2) Minmei's music is A LOT better (still Jpop, but some of the tunes are really very good, and succeed as good music that has aged well), and 3) the digital remastering is wonderful, and visually the show is far far brighter, colorful, and sharper (although I guess if you've gotten the newer, remastered Robotech DVDs, then that wouldn't matter as much). Oh, and 4) the voice over is gone, except for right at the beginning of the episode, and at the preview-- this helps more than one might think, as the audience isnt' continually told what to think, and the story is allowed to unfold for itself.
The BGM is also much more ... emotional, and less action based. Also, many times the Japanese version simply allows silence to work its magic. The music and the silences add to scenes that I thought were just OK before. As an example, the end of the Mars Base attack becomes much more emotionally engaging in the Japanese version-- both because of the music, the appropriate silences, and the lack of the, IMO, obnoxious narrator guy.
Those are the biggest differences to me. They are subtle, but they absolutely make the show better. Much better, IMO. The show comes off feeling more mature, a little deeper. If you're a fan of Macross, as it would seem, since you own the whole Robotech collection, it's worth buying these. They are some of my most prized anime DVDs in my entire collection.
Also, you can get a lot of them for half price (legit DVDs) on Half.com and Amazon.
Anyone else have any thoughts??
