Just a note that I have just watched the Excellent Arrietty the Borrower in Japanese with Subtitles. (DVD)
I enjoyed it immensly, only issue was possibly it could have ended differently other wise, a first class Ghibli production. Will watch again soon, to see the bits i didn't appreciate! Recommended family movie. Cheers [EDIT: Made your thread title flow a little better. -TK] |

Yeah gotta agree with that, having just watched it, the ending feels....really incomplete. I mean, they have a frikkin spoiler[advanced dollhouse custom made just for them to live in!] Kinda wish it had a more solid ending...one that feels spoiler[less like a loss]. Also, I can't help but think that Sho is probably going to spoiler[die after the movie]. Plus, Sho and Arriety would make a great couple...the slight difference in size might be a problem though. 
Overall I still enjoyed it a lot, Homily is one of the most animated characters I have ever seen. Felt incomplete(a bit too short?), but that's just me. |

I knew the story and animation would be good. My only concern was if Bridget Mendler had been cast just to generate some PR for the Disney channel. But she did really well.

I finally got to see the movie today, and I was very pleased. I got everything I expect from a Studio Ghibli film, and I thought all the actors (I saw the American dub) did very well. David Henrie got the sick child voice very well, and Bridgit Mendler handled Arrietty great. I also liked Carol Burnett as Hara.
One thing I'd like to know from someone who saw the Japanese version (spoilered because it may contain, well, spoilers): spoiler[Did the Japanese dub include the voice-over narration? I got a very Blade Runner-esque vibe that the studio (i.e., Disney) wanted a happy ending, so they added the narration from Sean. It would have been darker had the voice-over not happened at the end, telling us Sean returned a year later to his grandfather's house, implying the operation worked and his heart was repaired. I may be completely wrong, and Miyazaki may have had the narration in his version, too, but it would give the film a very different feeling at the end if the viewer wasn't sure Sean lived.] Even with that nagging question, I really liked Arrietty. |

If I assume this was some time during the credits or after the "The End": no, there isn't anything. A song is playing during the entire credits. |

^^^ No, this actually happened spoiler[after Arrietty told Sean she was moving and leaving his grandfather's house forever, and after she gave him her hair clip. The narration happened before the credits rolled, if I remember correctly.]

Yes, it did. It's an interesting question and I'd like to know, too. I really loved the film and will definitely be adding it to my collection at some point. Loved the dub, but I am curious about the UK version, especially now knowing that Saoirse Ronan did the Arrietty role. But I thought Bridgit Mendler did a fantastic job - her voice really suited the visual look of Arrietty, I thought.

Wow. Now I really want to see the Japanese dub, too. It's like comparing the director's cut of spoiler[Blade Runner] to the theatrical release. Tiny little changes give the two versions of the movie completely different final impressions. |

Glad to know she does well (I'm planning on going tonight), but the Disney casting does work. I work with a woman who has a girl who is a Disney Channel devotee and it was a Disney Channel promo that mentioned Mendler's involvement that got her excited to see Arrietty. The same girl was a huge fan of Ponyo as well (enticed originally by the casting of the Cyrus and Jonas kids) but she's completely ignorant of who made the movie, that the two are related and probably barely conscious of a Japanese connection at all. |

Make a good dub and they will ascribe you whole film. It worked in 80s in Poland for Maya the Honeybee. Even now when I review children's classic I can be sure that most of the comments will start from "OMG, it was anime!"
It works that way and there's nothing to wonder about- most people even don't bother to check Wiki about their favourites. (Sweet time of Game of the Thrones being aired when people were surprised how I knew what would happen). |
