For those who haven't played Seal, but have played other MMORPGs, the game doesn't really bring anything new to the table..

Quests fall into basic categories:
1) Talk to someone/something.
2) Kill someone/something.
3) Locate someone/something.

By completing quests, you get fame points, and the higher your fame, the better your 'title'. So, someone with the name "The Famed Ayako" has completed many more quests than "Whats-her-face Ayako". Higher fame points also grant better-looking graphics (someone sleeping under a newspaper is less famous than someone sleeping in a bed).

Monster spawns are rather basic, and tend to regenerate within a minute or two of their death. Farming is not only an option; it's encouraged.. that said, stealing another's kill is still looked down on.

Most monsters will drop gems (at a rate of about 1/256 kills) which can be used to improve items. As items improve, however, the likeliness that they'll become disenchanted also rises.. so if you have a +8 sword and use a diamond on it, there's like a 1/3rd chance that it'll improve to +9, and a 2/3rds chance that it'll destroy the item entirely. It's an interesting (although somewhat painful) way to keep excessively powerful items from flooding the market.

Everyone starts out as a novice and fights barehanded until level 10.. and naturally, those levels go by very quickly.. and then you can choose a class.

There's no level cap, although it gets very slow to advance past 100.

I enjoyed it, for the time that i played during the japanese beta.

Is it free? =P

I'd might give it a try though.

On a side note, I'd wish companies would get more creative than the somewhat fantasy/mideval setting in which the you hack and slash enemies for a slow level gain, until it takes 5 weeks to move up to the next level.

Not that they're bad games (I haven't played this one in particular), as I've enjoyed many a hack & slash (for a while at least). It just seems way too many MMORPG's follow the same fantasy setting.

Phantasy Star Online owns me. =P

Is it better than RO? Because I just started playing RO, but if Seal is free, I am quitting my RO subscription in a heart beat.

What does an MMORPG have to do with anime? Not trying to sound rude, it's a valid question.

MMORPG's of these nature tend to have "anime-style" designs. I don't think the idea is to present MMORPG's as a whole... it's not like you will see City of Hero's or Everquest on here. But when there things have some type of relationship to anime, it makes sense to report it.

If that's true, Godaistudios, then shouldn't there be news about Teen Titans, and other various "anime-style" shows being reported on ANN?

Yes, but only when it's convinient. I'm sure that the only reason that that article was posted was because of the other various anime shows (ie Gundam SEED, Dragon Ball Z, etc.)

Perhaps, but it's not the only article it's mentioned in, and also adds that it is heavily anime influenced. Besides, it's not like we are looking at an in-depth article on the game itself. It's just a blurb, for which we aren't likely to hear much buzz again on it for awhile.

Question: Does Seal put a lot of presure on you to join parties? For example in FFXI you can get up to lvl 10 no problem alone, but past that it's very slow going, you could probably get to about lvl 22 alone, but it takes months of constant gameplay to do that, otherwise it's just not practical to go alone. Personally I don't like having to depend on others to make MY character better. And on that other hand you've got games like PSO or Monster Hunter where you have the option to play alone or in groups and develope your character about the same either way. I know it may sound strange wanting to play alone in an MMORPG, but I like to have that option and I love the atmosphere of being around other people in the same game, I just don't like having to depend on them.

(Heh, as soon as I saw that news post I knew Cookie wasn't far behind)

That's why I like to play RO... you can go off by yourself if you want without too much difficulty... although me playing as a mage class means I get my butt kicked up and down if I wander into certain areas.

All (large) MMORPGs are pay-to-play; the amount of people involved, as well as the sheer amount of bandwidth and processing power require subscriptions to cover costs. Those that aren't P2P are either in beta, or are ad-supported, or have a really rich investor who doesn't care about losing money. Seal Online Korea, Taiwan and Japan all are pay-to-play, but I assume there would be a month or two as an English open beta, just like all the other releases.

FWIW, system requirements are probably in the range of:
1ghz P3/Athlon
256mb ram
500mb hd space
GeForce 2 (or something similar) or higher

(iow, any computer since about 2001)

Because it's an anime-style game, like Dark Ages and Ragnarok Online. And it's originally from Korea and Japan.

We have discussed things in the past (like HK cinema, Korean animation, and Tai-Seng's Chinese/Japanese co-production) that don't fit the mainstream concept of "anime", but I don't see anything wrong with throwing in the occasional "other" story, that doesn't quite fit our standard fare, but our readers might be interested in.

The game's probably changed since the Japanese Beta (which I played until mid-January of this year)... but at the time, not too much.

I was playing solo most of the time (I was unable to get the Japanese-language plugin working under the game, so there was a bit of a language barrier; I didn't like using romaji), and reached level 45-46 before the game had to rollback data from a discovered item duping bug (the joys of beta!).

You tended to get about 1 level per 2 hours of gameplay, once you hit level 30, and about 1/3hrs at level 40. the biggest slowdown, in my experience, was whenever you ran out of healing potions and needed to either start resting to recover HP, or needed to walk for a half-hour to get back to town, buy supplies and head back out.. only to find your farming spot taken by someone else when you got back.

It was, at the time, most profitable if you played solo, but it was very difficult to find an area where you could constantly farm enemies without anyone else walking in and starting their own farming routine.. so it was inevitable that, eventually, most people started forming parties whenever they wandered into an area.

Parties were limited to 6 players at a time. It wasn't necessary to have any specific mix of classes, although a priest was always useful for healing purposes. While partying, monster kills gave the rest of the party 10% of their experience... so if you killed a 1000 xp creature, the rest of the party would get 100. In at least the one dungeon I spent most of my time in, there were a few rooms set up with 9-12 monster spawn points, just enough for a single party of 6 to constantly attack monsters.

There was no PK in the game, so "griefing" was minimal, and usually involved people walking in on your farming spot and starting to kill enemies as they spawned, before you could kill them.

So, according to that paragraph, everything pumped out of Japan and Korea should be listed in the news, right? I'm just trying to get the full story here. I would expect this kind of news to be on GameSpot, not ANN.
