Ok, I showed to my teacher of English literature (more precisely, of Shakespearean studies) this thread and at the beginning I had to explain what anime were
 and from what all the discussion started. After she finally understood what was all about, she finally realised that there are other people in this world who haven't forgot about Shakespeare (thank goodness, I won't hear her complaining about his anymore) and so she was quite pleased and I actually convinced her to watch some anime (she is 46, but it's never too late to start watching anime, is it?)
But seeing all the discussions that were on this thread about how Shakespeare would sound in Japanese, she invited me and my collegues (we aren't many students that have taken this course) to watch a new adaptation of Richard III (quite an avangardist approach). Some of its parts were translated in some of most known languages like French, German, Spanish... and yes, Japanese. So yes, I have heard Shakespeare in Japanese (the discussions related to the murder of Richard's nephews). Let me just say that the public was a little shocked and the ones that didn't know the play, didn't understood a thing. I was surprised but very happy to have this chance of listening Shakespeare in Japanese.

I'm sorry to say so, but 「慈悲の精髄は不自然では有りません」 is unnatural (まさしく「不自然」！) and hardly understandable. It may be one of the biggest problems to foreign learners of Japanese to write in Japanese in a style which seems to native users of Japanese to be natural, however. Even Dr Donald Keene was criticised for unnatural expressions in one of his articles written in Japanese. The man of letters whom I have mentioned is Fukuda Tsuneari, a critic and playwright. Some of the lines in question in The Merchant of Venice are as follows: 慈悲は強いらるべきものではない。恵みの雨のごとく、天よりこの下界に降りそそぐもの。そこには二重の福がある。与えるものも受けるものも、共にその福を得る。これこそ、最も大いなるものの持ちうる最も大いなるもの、王者にとって王冠よりもふさわしき徴となろう。手に持つ笏は仮の世の権力を示すにすぎぬ。畏怖と尊厳の標識でしかない。そこに在るのは王にたいする恐れだけだ。が、慈悲はこの笏の治める世界を超え、王たるものの心のうちに座を占める。いわば神そのものの表象だ。単なる地上の権力が神のそれに近づくのも、その慈悲が正義に風味を添えればこそ。 There are several Japanese translations of The Merchant of Venice. I suggest it might not be a bad idea to study some of them in order to understand what native users of Japanese regard as a translation done in a natural style. |

Hmm, never read "The Tempest," but I could really go for some "Hamlet." There's a good chance that there are anime renditions of it in some form out there but I bet none ever caught the true essence of the real thing. |

We have? I don't remember any particular scuffles, other than the one recent thread I had to lock because you mentioned the former fansub group that did Naruto. Oh, well. Enemies we are!

Really in all sincerity, I was just poking some fun even though we have had some "scuffles" like some of my earlier posts when I was a newb on here. And that bit with the locked thread, in my defense, I fell for that fake report and was asking about it because within it, it said they won't be uploading new Naruto episodes. Then I realized my mistake and showed my disdain by that "one-site-that-is-never-allowed-to-be-mentioned-because-it-is-evil-and-pranks-to-its-loyal-seeders." But I certainly did not want to encourage others to keep on mentioning that certain name. My earlier post was simply informing (or in this case misinforming) others about what I saw. |
