Hmm, we also need to include the always reincarnating yusuke_1012 as well, no matter how many times you kill him, he comes back as somebody else.

With this upcoming Gonzo Shakespeare series, Japan has does it again. Besides classic Asian literature, they love to make series of Western literature. To date, there have been dozens of adaptations.

Ok, I have a question: can I show this to my literature teacher? She has been torturing us with the Shakespearean plays for an year, during which she kept saying that Shakespeare is dead for all the others except for us who study literature. Now with this I can prove that it is far from being that way. Though she wouldn't particularly enjoy the association with the anime, I believe that she might actually enjoy this part of the thred. So can I? Can I?

Why are you asking us? If you want to show it to her, then do it.

Appleseed, 26 episodes in total. Producer: John Woo?! No official confirmation.

Name's right up there. No official date. Confirmed. |
As much as I disliked both current anime incarnations of Appleseed, I am intrigued by those two snippets. I've seen teaser artwork for the latter I believe, & it looked very cool.

Good point. All right then. I'll show this thread to her. I am actually really curious to see her reaction about it. It will be a very interesting experiment.

I like "Cymbeline", but I've always had a soft spot for "The Merchant of Venice". Can you imagine a science-fiction style Gonzo remake of it, à la Gankutsuou? Sweet....
Plus, Portia's monologue on the topic of mercy absolutely rules, and would transfer well to Japanese: 『慈悲の精髄は不自然では有りません…』 (although I'm sure somone else already has done a translation). |
Well, perhaps I shouldn't say so, but 「慈悲の精髄は不自然では有りません...」 sounds an awkward and nearly unintelligible word-for-word translation.
A famous Japanese man of letters translated 'The quality of mercy is not strain'd' into Japanese as 「慈悲は強いられるべきものではない」.

Hmm... I knew my own quick seat-of-the-pants translation would never fly. After all, it was quick and dirty and I didn't spend any time on making it sound good. Even so, the one you quote seems to me to be not so much a translation as a paraphrase. Not that there's anything wrong with that, translators do it all the time, but still....
Which "famous Japanese man of letters" am I disrespecting here, by the way? And what did he make of the next part of the monologue?
