Though I always see the full episode, and most of times like many EDs, when I don't like them, I outright hate them. Happened to me with that FMA ending full of Winry scenes (mentioned above), the Ichigo Mashimaro ED, Bleach's (first, I suppose) ED helped me throw away this series at the first episodes... I must have a couple of examples more, but since I tend to forget things that I dislike, I can't remember them right now Razz

By the way, does anyone know about the percentage of shows that use cold opens (cut straight to opening credits) nowadays? This, to me, also plays a factor in why an OP are generally received better than its corresponding ED.

The only example I can think of right now is Arjuna, but I anyways loved that series, and the fact that they varied the ED in every episode made it more appealing Very Happy

I loved the engrishy 'Fly me to the moon'!

Here's what I noticed.. Opening themes are usually more upbeat and energetic, while ending themes can be a bit sad and mellow...

Like in demonbane, vandread, and dual! (of course there are more, but I don't want to make a list that's too long) the opening themes of these animes are very energetic.. it may have something to do with the mecha though, so I'm gonna add power stone, genshiken and cyberteam in akihabara to that list..

there are animes who have lighter opening themes compared to the ending themes -- like the first few episodes of Yakitate! Japan..

I generally like opening themes more, since I'm into upbeat and fun music when it comes to anime but there are some opening themes which I can't stand - like the opening theme of fushigi yuugi.. I like the ending theme a lot better.. And r.o.d the tv too.. It's not like I hate the opening theme, I just really like the song "confidence" Laughing

The trend may seem as such, but I would not say such an observation holds any weight though. While I really cant name any better ED than OP off the top of my head due to the shows I am watching right now, I'm sure there has been just as many. Also, this comes down to personal opinion in the end.

I think that I tend to like OPs more, but it just depends upon the series. Like most people have said, most of the time the OPs are the upbeat ones to get you to watch the series, other times it's vice-versa. Often times with the upbeat OPs and the mellow EPs, it's to bring out a soft side of a character who has or will have influence throught the story. EP for Hellsing showed all three characters influential characters though.

I agree with you 100%. OPs are usually better sounding. I seem to always be able to stand OPs, but sometimes I just can't stand the EDs... of course, a complete and utter acceptance of hyper j-pop (no matter how mindless) helps. Usually, the endings are slow, sometimes even sad. And they of course can afford to be dull.

Some animes I thought OP < ED:
Tokyo Mew Mew My Sweet Heart was catchy, but sorta boring. But then Koi Wa A La Mode (Love A La Mode) was blow-you-away hyper and awesome (I mean, if you like that sort of stuff) to no return.
Full Metal Alchemist If you didn't already know, Kesanai Tsumi PWNED Melissa all the way.
Uta-Kata It was almost equal on these for me. At first I was obsessed with Omoi wo Kanadete, but half-way through I could barely stand hearing a sudden happy song in a show that was getting more depressing by the episode and started becoming even more obessed with Itsuka Tokeru Namida.[/b]

I, on the other hand, really didn't care for the song. I really don't know what it was about it, but everytime it came up, I just tuned it out. Perhaps it's the fact that, between six OST's, over a dozen different (I've lost count) versions of this one song came up. The only version of this song that I like are the bossa nova-stlye versions that Aya performed.
