I think your opinion is somewhat bias, even if you are overweight, if you feel so insecure as to not cosplay, don’t encourage others to not cosplay. I’m sorry your statement just made me sick, who cares what the others will think as long as you have a good time cosplaying a character you love, let the judgmental people judge, at least you had fun at the end of the day. |

I think one important point to raise, is are you worried purely due to practicalities or due to insecurities?
If you are insecure, ask yourself if this is what you really want to do and if you think it will make you feel happy. If you feel good in whatever you cosplay as, then it is a winner. I'm by no means an expert, but the general cosplaying atmosphere isn't exactly bitchy model style, so that should be fine and fairly accepting. (As long as you've made an effort and/or been original.) If you are happy with it all, I guess I would only say avoid overly revealing cosplays (unless you are so secure that it really doesn't bother you,) but apart from that have fun. As far as I am aware, that is the main point of cosplay anyway. If it starts to become a stressful chore, then perhaps you should rethink a bit. Cheesy answer I guess, but I think it's a reasonable point. And as for the whole 'are anime female characters (or males for that matter) at all representative?' question, while being wholly pertinent, I think the answer is both a bit complicated, but also a resounding NO. But it is not substantially worse than Hollywood or any western popular culture in my opinion. I don't feel these kinds of issues should affect a cosplay decision too much anyway... |

I'll just say that I'm going to cosplay as Lupin for AX next year, and have nowhere near as long legs as him, neither am I tall and lanky like him either.

This might not work as well for the females...but overweight males can still go as the lean and fit characters...just a time jump washed up version. I almost went as Ryo Saeba (City Hunter) but felt most people probably wouldn't even recognize him.

almost all forms of entertainment have an image. most cater to skinny, good looking people. if you dont look good, then a lot of times your not acceptable. its about flash. anime is no different.
its just popular images in different forms of media. |

If you are a bit on the plus size but don't look too much like it (ie, no wings...) Then you could try someone like Robin from witch Hunter Robin.
The heavy trench coat and her baggy dress/bustle should hide most 'spillage' and hey...black's slimming |

best advice I think would be dress for your body type. in other words if you are 200+ don't dress as Naru from love hina(which I have seen) I know that may sound cruel and insensitive but some of the best cosplayers I have seen seem to follow this rule. I'm not putting anyone down either, I'm 5'7' and kinda doughy so I wouldn't try to dress up as say Vash the Stampede. but as some others have pointed out it's all what you're comfortable with.

I've yet actually cosplay myself (I'm thinking of buying a Haruhi outfit online for a local convention this year, though), but I'm positive that the key to a good cosplay is self confidence. Don't freak out over being overweight if your character is just a microscopic stick with a head, since most anime characters are pretty anorexic anyways and duplicating their exact weights would be unhealthy. When I watched the Tokyo Babylon OVAs in like the sixth grade or so, and I remember feeling insecure about my own weight during a scene where Hokuto sits on a scale that tells her she's only eighty pounds and she goes ballistic over how "fat" she is. It shocks to this day me when I look up character bios and find out much these characters "officially" weigh. So a perfectly healthy-looking tall nineteen-year-old girl with D-cup breasts is only ninety pounds? How is that even humanly possible?!
Just be proud of your body, and flaunt your outfit like a superstar. Cosplay is all about poise, which is why I'm convinced that this man is the greatest cosplayer ever: |

I, too, have trouble with cosplaying.... I'm 14 years old, 5'11", and 147 pounds.
I'm too embarrased to cosplay because I'm afraid people will think I'm too skinny to be an anime fan....[/sarcasm] |

Take a look at some of the anime male body types out there. Throw some colored hair on you and it's perfect. They are all tall and thin. Don't let fear of what other people might think turn you off cosplay if it's something you are interested in. Lol, if it makes you feel better, when I met my ex, he was 18, 6'3" and about 160 pounds. He was mostly bones. Like most other thin guys, in his early twenties he started filling out, and he's just beautiful now. Add the fact that he is a nice guy since girls weren't really into to him for a long time. Now days woman pretty much just throw themselves at him. It's like an anime superpower. He looks at them, and their clothes explode. As for the opening post, I say pick a girl who actually wears some clothes and then be confident about it. Someone like Robin who stays covered. I always thought that although it wouldn't be trendy or super recognizable, the lady (whose name I have forgotten) from Millenium Actress would be a great cosplay for a woman who doesn't want her parts on display. She stays covered most of the time, and she wears such a variety of costumes, you could dress almost anyway you want. I'm not particularly into cosplay myself, but she is who I would pick. I'm not really over weight, but I'm older and definitely a bit soft. |

What about Jubei - Chan?
She is normal to plus size and kicks some serious butt. |

I saw people cosplaying at a con this weekend with no regards to what they looked like as far as their own body type/skin color/size/etc. Do whatever the hell you wanna.
