A lot of anime songs end up making me feel upbeat or calm, but never sleepy. I find Chinese music to be much more relaxing like a lullaby for me. But, if I had to choose something from anime, it would probably be the music from .hack//SIGN.

I just got the Angel's Egg soundtrack a few days ago and have been drifting off to sleep with it in my stereo every night. It's quite haunting and beautiful; mostly quiet, slightly unsettling diminished piano chords mixed with choral singing and strings--very ethereal, albeit slightly nightmare-inducing. It's hopped to the top of my "favorite OSTs" list for now.

I'm a complete insomniac and oftentimes I find music a good way to fall asleep or to have a more refreshing sleep (i.e. I don't wake up in the morning thinking about a dream) . I love the soundtrack to Hayao Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky, but any other soundtrack to his movies will also work. They're calming without being boring, so I hope your intention isn't to be bored to sleep. I would also recommend a .Hack//sign soundtrack, but I would personally rip the tracks and omit stuff that you might not like to sleep to. I personally would never have a good night's sleep after listening to a lot of chanting. For some strange reason, music by Origa also seems to work, although it's difficult to find. I generally isten to classical/non-anime instrumentals because it's more difficult to have the tune stuck in my head than if I played the Inu-Yasha theme songs.

Since someone else mentioned video games, I guess its alright to mention my favorite composer of all time Nobuo Uematsu of Final Fantasy notoriety. The FFVIII Piano Collections is a personal favorite of mine to doze off to.
Now as far as Anime is concerned, someone earlier mentioned "Where Does This Ocean Go" from the GITS:SAC OST, I felt it necessary to mention "I Do", "Know Your Enemy" and "What's It For" as well. And since I'm starting to go off on a Yoko Kanno tangent a bit, I have no choice but to mention a heavy favorite "Space Lion". The congo drums really suit the vocals well.

I Normally Fall asleep to such tunes as Ayumi Hamasaki's "a sond for XX" or "Real me" I also use some Nobuo Uematsu's songs he's performed on the Piano or any Orchastrated pieces like "Aerith's theme" or "Suteki da ne". As far as anime goes, I always find Trigun's Jazzy atmosphere to help me sink into slumber, As well as Ghost in the Shell's "I do" *sigh* I wish Itunes offered us more anime OSTs...

I think that someone already mentioned Akino Arai... her works are great and they are very realxing... I came across her name when listening to the X/1999 soundtrack (she is responsible for the Kakyo piece)... and since then I heard much of her compositions.
And talking about the X/1999 ost, I found it very relaxing (however there are some pieces over there that may seem not so relaxing to some). Then I must agree with the ones that reommended Fruits Basket both the intro and the ending song which are very good (there are also some nice compositions on the soundtrack that I found very relaxing).

Yeh same here. I think all the piano compositions makes me doze off most of the times. Most of the songs From Nobuo Uematsu are great to listen to. I have FFVII, X, X-2 OST's and i put the songs on to my psp and listen to them at night when i want to go to sleep but for somereason i cant. The music is a great help to make me fall asleep

I know most of you have probably grown out of this but i can fall asleep easily listening to music box versions of j-pop and ghibli ost's. It's rather sad how they're not exactly that popular though cause i think they're awesome to listen to.

I could probably fall asleep with the FF: Piano Collections, especially the soft songs.

Hmmm, songs to sleep to, eh? Well, there's a few I can think of. I'll tell you:
The opening and ending songs for Aria, "Undine" by Yui Makino, and "Rainbow" by ROUND TABLE feat. Nino are both really nice and relaxing.
The whole album "For Fruits Basket -Four Seasons-" is really nice. Any of Ritsuko Okazaki's music is really relaxing to listen to.
Some of Hikaru Utada's songs work good. Like WINGS, time will tell, and COLORS are pretty good.
And there are a lot of OST's that I've listened too that have some really nice calm music. Like a lot of Yoko Kanno's music is good, the OST for Eureka Seven has some nice ones. And there are a whole lot more I can think of, but that would take forever! lol. ^^
Well, I hope I helped! : )

I fell asleep today listening to Waltz for Zizi by Yoko Kanno. Yoko's softer tracks are so relaxing.
Also, Rainbow by Round Table ft. Nino is a great, calm song.
(Basically I agree with the above poster's post)

I could fall asleep to most of Kanno's work.
Maaya Sakamoto's voice puts me to sleep too.
And let's not forget Akino Arai. Yeah, i'm asleep.
