I got the Director's Cut version of the first OVA series and I enjoy it. I actually wasn't bothered by the cropped picture (please don't kill me). I also like how ADV remembered to subtitle the text that wasn't subtitled in their OVA release. I was surprised that they didn't have the Samurai X overlays (not that I recall anyway) in the Japanese with English subtitles this time around. Too bad about the lack of extras, though. Considering the extras on the seperate OVA releases, the lack of any extras for the movie version is a huge disappointment (trailers don't count). I was still happy with the purchase, though. Kenshin Trust/Betrayal is one of the best animes I have ever seen and the movie version is still incredible.

IMO, it's worth watching some of the first arcs of the Kenshin TV series to get some info on the characters and some of the arcs are kind of cool, but, from what I read of the manga, you are better off checking that out if you want some info on the characters. Some of the arcs were done much better in the manga and Aoshi doesn't have the power to magically lift four bodies at once and move them in a split second in the manga. However, the manga has some differences from the anime, so some parts of it may confuse you if you go from manga to anime.

To the original poster:

You could but why do that when the series is as good as Kenshin???

IMHO, you should watch the show thusly...

1. Watch the Tokyo Arc first. Gives you the necessary character intros, a few awesome fights, and basically gets you attached to the characters while understanding Kenshin's philosophy....

2. Watch Kyoto Arc Next. This arc will basically show you why Kenshin is so good. The new characters can be much better appreciated that now having seen the Tokyo Arc you know their backgrounds much better.

3. Watch Samurai X: Trust and Samurai X: Betrayal/ This will show you Kenshin's past - with NO HUMOR/COMEDY at all. Since you will be much attached to Kenshin, seeing him in this new way is both chilling and exhilarating.

4. Watch the rest of Kenshin if you wish. Meiji arc is not that great though there are plenty of laughs and fights that are OK. Not great, but OK. You could throw in Samurai X: MOVIE and Samurai X: Reflections...

Regarding the fighting, fighting fighting, powering up, fighting fighting fighting comments:

the RK series has (I would think) proved that it can do extremely well without non-stop fighting scenes loosely based around a storyline. While the fighting in the Koyoto Arc may seem excessive in comparison to other episodes and too good an opportunity for the pwoers-that-be to pass up on (in terms of more action sequences), remember that the storyline is all ABOUT Kenshin faced with something he's been avoiding like the plague for the past 10 years.

He's got to stop being non-violent, become the Battousai again (or so Saito says) to defeat Shishio, and this is going to take some time - and a lot of blood and death along the way. The conclusion of Ep. 36 sums this all up very nicely, when Kenshin wishes that he "was not forced to become a manslayer again." Who out there really thinks Kenshin would just "poof" magically overcome 10 years of determined non-killing to slaughter Shishio and his men? Not going to happen. Besides, it creates more angst for the character, it's not like in DBZ where the characters think nothing of daily bouts of violence against the enemy.

Hi,

I know this is an old thread, but having tried some of this out, I thought i'd just say that it didn't seem very necessary for me to watch the first 3 discs of the first season. I did, but I personally didn't like them much. It turned me off from the show (perhaps I was looking for something more dramatic??). Having stepped into the second season, and having enjoyed it, I don't feel that I would have missed much by just starting with The Shadow of the Wolf disc. You get thrown into the mix right away, which I liked. You still get background on Kenshin in the revolution, his vow not to kill, how long he's been at Karou's dojo, the fact that Sano is suppossed to be a powerful fighter that used to be for hire, the "two sides" of Kenshin... I still got a feeling of "history", and even though I wouldn't have known every detail about what had happened (and in fact didn't, as I hadn't seen the whole first season), I still felt very in control of the whole viewing experience. I didn't feel lost.

So, to anyone that might want to just jump into the second season, I'd say go for it. That's just me though.

Thanks for all the help though guys.

Steve
