First off, yay for manga being so readily available and for increased growth!
 I read the article and it talks about how, "Many publishers are concerned about a glut of titles." I know I have noticed an increase in titles in the whole manga area, especially the teen/shoujo/angsty series. Being a girl, I do enjoy these titles, but, I also enjoy the more deep?...more plot-driven titles. I wonder if there is a such thing as too much shoujo, teen-angsty stuff. I mean, after a while...every story is the same...guhh... Well, no worries publishers, I don't foresee a sudden drop in sales in the near future due to a glut of titles, no matter how cookie-cutter some series are.

Wow, I really didn't think that more girls would be buying manga than boys. Now that's really surprising.
But the number of volumes released....500 and 200 in one YEAR... That just sounds a little too high. I bet if I went to tokyopop's website and counted all the titles and volumes currently available now, that it wouldn't even equal 500. |

Molloaggie, I think you misread something here... these are planned for 2004...
And if you go to the website and count just what they have listed under manga titles? 102 Now considering that they expect new acquisitions, and releasing current ones, many of which could go into 10+ volumes (Love Hina and GTO did) Let's assume that with new and ongoing series,we take about half of the titles... 51 titles, at an average of 10 volumes done per title over the next year would be around 510... and it could go even beyond that estimate. You have severly underestimated the titles they have. |

I don't think it's that suprising that girls buy more manga than boys, because lots of girls buy both shoujo and shonen whereas not to many boys I know read a lot of shoujo. Yea the fact that there's a lot of shoujo titles out now helps, but I think that getting into both types happens more with girls than boys.

A few things surprised me in the article, but keep in mind, these are all quotes from one person. While Stu Levy is definitely a person to listen to in regards to these items, it's possible that his figures could be off a bit, they could be more representative of TOKYOPOP than the market as a whole, or they could be based on a more vocal part of fandom.
What surprised me was the market figure, I would have thought the market was worth somewhere between $100m and $120m max. But then who knows, it could be worth $170m. The male / female readership surprised me a bit too, I would have expected the numbers to be inverted. I suspect Stu's figures were more representative of TOKYOPOP's clientelle, with their titles being so heavilly shoujo. I'm pretty sure that the majority of the 500 000 people that buy Shonen Jump every month are guys. As for the number of Skus (volumes), 500 sounds reasonable. TPOP's title list is growing rapidly, and they can put out anywhere from 4 to 12 volumes for a title in a year. |

Just something to point out.
Recently alot of the manga's out now by TokyoPop, Are manhwa's not manga's. Difference is? Manhwa's are Korean. Manga's are typically Japanese. How You Can Tell. 1- Left to right format. 2- Name of author. 3- Untranslated sound effects in Korean. Keep an eye out for them! They're just as good, you wouldn't even tell the difference. Which Ones? I know for certain two, because I've begun the series. But trust me there's more! Like I said keep an eye out! I.N.V.U Under the Glass Moon

It seems there is an increase in titles of manga in the states, as the article states. How do these numbers compare in relation to the number of titles published in Japan? I know manga's a heck of a lot more popular over there, than here.

Yesturday, I read an article in this week's Publisher's Weekly (Oct. 20, 2003 issue). In it it said that several manga titles had sold in excess or 250,000 and 100,000 copies. As far as the literary industry goes, that is bigger than just being a niche market. Also, they confirmed that 60% of sales are to the female audience. I hope that the American comics market finally takes this as a wake up call and begins to model their business practices to approximate something approaching sanity. Continuity, both visual and story, are important afterall.

I see that now. Sorry, so little news appears on this site that I usually only check the forums and decode what everyone's talking about by working backwards. So basically, the numbers in the article are accurate. Viva la revolution! Also, a lot of Tokyopop's new books are from Korea. A lot of new comics are coming from Korea now. The Koreans are beginning to compete big time in lots of markets that the Japanese are extensively vested in: cars, electronics, animation, comics...

vandalthorne, anything to do with anime/manga I always find out here at ANN first then any other place, so saying there's little news is underating ANN.
But back to the original topic, I didn't know girls read more manga then guys!

Well if manga prices stay where they are you will be sure that I will keep buying my 3 weekly manga. I am glad to see that manga have made their own little nitch in the market but I get all my manga from F&S Collectables so I never really bothered to check retail stores... anyoen have any retail stores in particular

After reading the article, it surprises me to learn that American publishing houses like Antartic Press are just NOW finding out that graphic novels in bookstores sell better than the small monthly issue in comic book stores.
Coming from France, I always found it odd that american comic books were so hard to come by. In France, there's whole sections of comic books in regular bookstores, in fact there aren't exactly "comic book shops" to speak of. Isn't it obvious that targeting a mainstream audience would bring in more money? I don't understand why comics in America are handled so differently than in Europe... |
