Seriously, I'm watching KGNE at the moment, and like in all soaps and so on, every problem comes up from people not talking to each other. I want to just go in there and slap some sense into people.

The female characters are often pretty damn pathetic as well... I suppose that is a different issue of how women are portrayed in anime as well, but I find it infuriating that they are so subservient and timid.

It is an effective anime and all with involving character developments, but all they ever seem to do is sit about in awkward silences not saying what needs to be said. After the effectiveness of episodes 1 and 2, they have just been seriously wimpy and annoying. It seems to be insipid women and indecisive useless men and the problems generated by them...

Also, the other 'novelty' characters in it (I guess to lighten the mood,) like the nurses and the waitresses, are just stupid and shallow as well.

I guess I can't really say how I would react to a spoiler[ love triangle between a girl just come out of a coma and her best friend...] But still, it's irritating me no end.

This is what is also appealing about 'soap' style stories though - the fact that they get you riled up and involved, so I guess it is better to be irritated by the characters and their situations than disinterested...

Sounds like real life to me. Besides, if they actually did that, you wouldn't have much of a show. It would be short and boring.

That's a cultural issue dealing the Ideal Japanese Woman (Yamato Nadeshko, I believe). I agree that it can be irritating though.

In real-life, one of the biggest problems people have in their relationships is a lack of communication. It's hard to just open up and tell someone things about yourself that you've never told anyone before or that you think might be embarrassing. Just telling someone "I like you" can be extremely difficult for some people.

The whole thing with how women are portrayed as shy and/or subservient in anime, this is mostly a cultural thing since the Japanese value such things in a woman. However, it's also somewhat realistic since you can and will find women in the real world who are shy and/or subservient. You just might not have noticed them since they were hiding in the corner.

I was the male version of the "shy girl with glasses" type character growing up, so I can relate easily to shy characters.

If you were someone who didn't have trouble talking to people or expressing yourself growing up, you won't understand that it can be very difficult for others to do the same. You're lucky not to be able to.

I don't know about where you are, but the soaps in the US are more about watching as the characters attempt to sleep with every other character of the opposite sex. Both irritating and disinteresting to me. They used to be more about what evil character would try to threaten your favorite couple's happiness, but that's long since fallen away as a plot device.

Kimi ga nozomu eien is a special case. I seriously think this is one of the most-overrated shows of recent years. The characters are tremendly stupid* and the whole 3P relationship is very shallow. The whole setting basically screams "My origin is a H-Game". Better watch a classic like KOR or Honey & Clover for some serious romance.

* (For example: How long does it take for the redhead girl to realize that she spoiler[has been the last three years in coma?]. How can't she realize that spoiler[all the people around her have gotten older, or the changes of her own body, in an instant]? :-/

You've also got to hunt out the better shows-- I find most anime romances too wishy washy as well. Many anime shows run the same sort of premise as something like "Sleepless in Seatle" where the two only get together or truly express their feelings just at the end of the story. I much preferred the central romance of Kare Kano, and in Daddy Long Legs, and the romance of Emma also really progresses. Same goes for the relationships in Escaflowne. Most everyone ends up knowing who they care for earlier on, and the show goes forward from there, dealing with their budding relationship.

Of course, that's merely a matter of preference. I was never the super shy type, so perhaps I have a hard time really relating to characters who aren't able to express how they feel. Mostly, I guess I feel like some of those shows are stretching the romance too far, to milk it for as much as they can, rather than really letting it develop, so that we can see how the two characters actually relate to each other.

Add me to the list of people who hate these characters with a fiery passion that would impress satan.

It's extremely unrealistic that people could go through the situations described and react the way they do (perhaps they would still be equally productive, but they sure wouldn't act that way). Either way, that's why I don't really watch those shows any more, or if I do find myself watching them... it's despite those characters. Any show that contains a major character like that basically just lost itself at least one (at LEAST one) full rank on MyAnime list.

Im waiting for the indecisive man to talk to the OPEN-MINDED girl, theres always an open-minded one, and use a colorful metaphor to describe the problem he's having with the girls. and ask what she thinks about it

I've always hated indecisive guys in anime. The problem here isn't just romance animes, but in all anime that contains romance. Whenever I see a scene where the guy is being indecisive romantically, I tell myself: "wow, this is getting retarded, hopefully it'll be done soon". Basically, as a guy, I want the male lead to represent us as someone who's cool and worth something. An indecisive guy is well, just annoying to look at.

I feel the exact same way, hence all of the romance titles I've seen other than Fruits Basket has received what I'd consider to be a poor rating.

well then Stupidman007, have you seen Ai Yori Aoshi or SHUFFLE! ?

Kaoru (from Ai Yori Aoshi) is an impressive man and stands up for what he wants.

Rin (from SHUFFLE!) also is pretty cool, although he has that indecisive streek, his actions during the show is impressive.

Many romance anime characters are idiots (hence why I don't watch a lot of it) but you can't generalize. Case in point, NANA. Not only are the characters not morons (with the exception of Shouji and Sachiko), but they're so real it hurts.

I haven't seen Ai Yori Aoshi, but I have seen Shuffle, and no I don't think he's cool. While he wasn't as screwed up as Takayuki from KgNE, the way he was inconsiderate of and simply puts off Kaede disgusts me. I actually liked the first half before Rin's problems and the increase in Ecchi.

i liked the increase of Ecchi, from ep. 9 and up (9 had the first sign of nudity). it actually fit SHUFFLE IMO, ya i forgot about his lack of Kaede care.........BUT besides that he ended up being cool. At least he tried to kill himself, and this was the first and only show where the girl that I wanted the main character to choose, chose.

and you should AI Yori Aoshi. EVERYONE SHOULD[/spoiler]

I too have had a problem with finding romance titles I would be interested in watching. From all the descriptions I've read, they all seem to either a) be based on porn games, b) turn ecchi or c) start out fine but have a couple you come to like alot eventually engage in underage sex (don't teenagers not even out of highschool just plain date anymore? Sad ).

One title I would suggest to everyone is Voices of a Distant Star. It's only a half hour long, but better than most of the other anime out there. Both of the leads have heads on their shoulders and are very sympathetic.

Honey and Clover sounds promising, but there doesn't seem to be any sign of that coming to Region 1 anytime soon.

haha Voices of a Distant Star is good but NOT better then MOST of ALL the anime out there. Arent most of these romance animes based off H-Games, hell even Utawarerumono was, so that shouldnt be reason to overlook it, neither should the Ecchi thing, its just part of the show. i guess i could see the under age sex thing being part of a problem but it shouldnt efeect you that much.

I hate Ecchi with a passion, and really dont see how it fits with any non hentai anime series other than for being fanservice with a few exceptions that are based on my judgement.

How does trying to kill yourself ever make you cool? From the beginning of the final sequence, I knew that an easy way to spoiler[get Asa to use her power was to threaten to suicide], but I was also telling myself that if the story goes that way, I'm gonna hate it. I find the thought of suicide to be a weakness, if someone has to commit suicide to accomplish anything, then that person has basically succumbed to the idea of him/herself being unable to do anything else.

I also have problems with points b, and c, but not all romance titles based on porn games are bad. While I've seen a very limited amount of romance titles, and even fewer based on porn games, I can say that both AIR and Kanon fall under the romance category that are based on porn games that does not touch points b or c. Only problem with them is that I don't really consider them to be "romance".
