Well I asked about the theatrical runs because I just got back from NYAF, where they said "Summer Wars and Rebuild of Evangelion 2 will have theatrical runs"
Really I was just asking because of Justin's strong reaction the last time ANNcast talked about the Rebuild of Eva #1 theatrical run, and he balked at NTV demanding 1,000 theaters and FUNimation having difficulty getting them to understand...I mean conceptually understand...that just because it topped the box office in Japan doesn't mean it could *possibly* sustain a nationwide release in the USA, even Miyazaki stuff like Ponyo barely gets on the radar here. I really don't know much about the behind-the-scenes goings-on, even Justin said he "wasn't supposed to know" about the thousand-screens thing, so all of my knowledge comes from what Justin said last time. Good that we will be getting news soon. Not a threat but an observation: if Tiffany Grant is not Asuka, you're going to have a riot on your hands. And a riot, is an ugly thing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QEplyKtDYo&featuret#t=3m28s It would be great if someone could do a proper release of End of Evangelion: to this day I think Justin uses it as the pre-eminent example of "horrible physical release desperately begging to be re-released" Ignoring any other factors, I mean even the basic DVD transfer was flawed, it had this wacky brightness problem that...didn't just give things an unnatural "glow", but made certain scenes *borderline unintelligible*...consider this comparison shot: http://revolutionofevangelion.org/wiki/images/5/52/EoEMangled.jpg Last edited by _V_ on Fri Oct 22, 2010 9:26 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I'm kind of hoping that instead of Tiffany Grant as Asuka, they could get somebody who knows what subtlety is.

GAH! Okay, so no news on noitaminA yet.
Well, I'm still holding off on Kuragehime fansubs, but if you don't say yes or no sometimes soon... I know you've got stress right now what with the sale and all, but there's keeping your fans in the loop, ya know? |

The news on Sgt. Frog is quite sad. I guess it means we may never see the rest, unless Sentai gets it which will likely mean sub only.

Nobody in the TV series English dub was capable of subtlety. Spike Spencer was just as guilty of exaggerating. But I guess I can't blame them too much, with Matt Greenfield directing. Few ADV dubs hold up. NGE Isn't one of them. |

I want my second season. everyone go out and buy it now, i don't care if you use it as Frisbees or coasters, just buy it. with that out of the way! Nice to hear from Lance again ^^ He's a very informative guest. Also kindof cool that Hastings is growing, I live in a college town so I shop there all the time, good to hear its having an effect. |

Yeah I was noticing how anime BDs seemed to be shuffled in with the general catalogue the last time I was in a Best Buy. Surprised me when I stumbled on the Eureka 7 movie. Definitely not a great strategy in my opinion...
To repeat: happy to see Funimation making an effort to reinstall the collector's mentality. Win-win situation for me with the USD low and the AUD high. Just don't eat too much of your costs, Funi, don't want to see you get sick. Also: yeah, I think as far as designing specific extras goes, there's only so much communication with the fandom you want to create. The story about Mermaid was good to hear! I kind of wondered how it was doing... didn't seem like it would be high-risk, at least. Similarly, the comments on where revenue is coming from were appreciated. I couldn't have said with complete confidence that I thought DVD sales were still the absolute king, but I suppose it isn't really surprising given the still-nacent state of streaming media, as Lance outlined. Anyway, good news. I'm pumped to finally get word about 2.22. I want that on BD like nobody's business. On the whoe: was great having Lance back on! Side note: I'm really interested in watching Community, but there's no talk about it over in this part of the world at all--I guess that's because the audience is small, which I didn't know. |

The answer is YES, fans are marginalizing themselves. While you can blame the shitty anime that has always existed, it makes more sense to blame the people that shout out internet memes and prance around the mall with Yaoi fanart and Naruto headbands for people being turned off by anime.

I sympathize with your position in some respects: lets face facts, the dubbing industry was in its infancy in 1997...but it was also the period when it grew into maturity. -->Even I think that the dub only really hits its stride around episode 8, when the second storyarc starts. And it gets truly great around episode 17 or so. This is why I like the English dub of Rebuild of Eva 1 so much: particularly because it was so close to episodes 1-6, it allows Spike and Allison a real chance to do Shinji and Misato, with justice, in the first storyarc. Also, speaking of Blu rays, the Rebuild of Eva 1.11 Blu Ray was the first I ever bought, what made me get a Blu Ray player, and I was not disappointed. All the major Blu Ray review sites said it was the new *benchmark* in Blu ray audio-visual quality. (extras, on the other hand, were sorely missed...) |

Eh, I didn't seriously think there was really any chance that FUNimation would dust off the old Geneon Strawberry Marshmallow TV series license and then release the OVA's, but I still thought I'd ask anyway. If the OVA's get licensed at all, they'd probably be sub-only from either Nozomi or maybe NIS America.
I am one of the few dozen people who bought the Strawberry Marshmallow TV series singles, and I paid full price for 'em too, though they're probably my most watched anime DVDs from the past couple of years other than maybe Azumanga Daioh so I have no regrets. I'm happy that Baka & Test is getting a physical release. That'll be a blind buy for me, solely because I find the character of Hideyoshi... intriguing. |

About Ouran not doing so well on Blu-ray: I don't think it had to do with the genre at all. I mean, I'd love to see some of my favorite shojo/josei titles get the Blu-ray treatment! I think it had more to do with Ouran not being native HD. For a while, "upscale" was quite the dirty word in anime fandom...

I bought Love Hina just because it was the first fansub I watched as it was being made, and the Tv series was 20 bucks. You need to watch it just to see how bad the dub is, the highlight is when they forgot to dub Kitsune yelling "Naru" during the broke episode. It was mediocre, but I was entertained enough to re-watch the whole thing after 10 years.
Anime is never going to return to what it was in the early 2000's, the Japanese culture has changed so much that shows like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is really well received but it barely made a noise in Japan. Just compare sales of Japanese games where Square Enix has gone from being hailed as one of the greatest video game companies to a complete joke. Glad to hear how My Bride is a Mermaid did successfully. To bad about Sgt. Frog since the last Funi podcast gave us hope that we would get more of it. Oh dear god, Sengoku Basara was probably one of the largest promoted anime. Yeah a lot of it was Capom unity but Capcom and Funimation where working together. Too bad that we didn't hear about how well Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood was doing. As for Evangelion, I would just wait to see the 4th movie just to see what their going to do with the masturbation scene, and Giant Naked Rei. I mean with a change in anime, with works like Ikkitousen, and Queen's Blade you think that Hideaki Anno has something up his sleeve.
