This is what I have been wondering for quite some time. With more and more people watching anime, so many have gotten into the habit of pronouncing anime in general as "animes" even though it is not a correct word due to its singular nature and just the word itself in general. Does this seem to bother anyone else? Almost everytime I go onto another forum or talk to people about anime, they will always refer to it as "animes" or "anime's" which has really started to bug me a lot. Does anyone know how this incorrect pronunciation started and why people are referring to anime this way even more so over the years and have many of you noticed that it has appeared even in mainstream publications?

I know that but the over abuse of this incorrect word has made it one of my top annoyances, I just glad that most people on these forums don't use this word.

The one time I pointed it out I got accused of being a sheep shagger. Yeah, people can be so silly at times.
And I do see people here at ANN use the word, but I can never be bothered to correct them anymore. |

Until a fool opens his mouth (or posts in a forum as the case may be) he may be judged as a silent genius or a silent fool.
The fact that some people really enjoy proving that they are fools rather than maintaining the plausibility of genius really shouldn't bother you. Besides, in the long run, none of it matters since languages degrade over time and become increasingly simplified. English as we know it is quite a bit less than it used to be and text messaging and the severe lack of actual education in this country (may the public school be cursed) pretty much insures that in the future, everyone is going to write and talk like even bigger morons than so many do now. Personally, people posting "animes" doesn't bother me nearly as much as the people who say and post things like "more better." Grammatically, the "er, est" bits are going bye-bye in favor of "more" for everything. Not that I'm a perfect paragon of proper grammar myself but sometimes the mistakes are so glaring you can't hardly believe it. Still, it's pointless to really let it bug you. It's just one more bit of inevitable collapse of civilization. |

Before worrying about that, I'd worry about people referring to a single "panini."
Language morphs and shifts across cultures. And while speaking a sentence in English, I'm not sure it makes sense to suddenly shift to the grammar rules of a different language for a single word. I mean, when talking about Colonial history, people usually refer to "the conquistadors searching for gold," not "los conquistadores searching for gold." |

Since anime wasn't even in the Webster dictionary until around 1998, I don't think there is much use in starting a grammatical Third Reich.

I find this very entertaining, just to say. Nothing like imagining those who get bugged by it squirming in their seats at every iteration they come across.
Yes. There's a language called English and it uses plurals. Those who speak proper English will default to their native language than that of the foreign word, such as the Japanese "anime". I've also seen this done with words like "seiyuus" and "legos" (though this isn't Japanese). Here's a friendly tip: Let. It. Go. If you're truly this bent out of shape over the use of plurals, no matter how nice you address the issue, it makes you look the Douchebaggin' Grammar Nazi. Not that you are. People hate being called out on something so trivial. Lead by example: reply to their posts, sans the pointing out, using the proper way. Let them ask the question. Friendly tip over. Now, time to search for ways to use "bakas" in a reply. |

There are English words that have identical singular and plural forms, though, and many words borrowed from Latin, at least, retain their original pluralizations despite "-us" -> "-i" or "-um" -> "-a" being unlike most English forms. |

Well at least they are not calling them Animu, or Mango...
Personally I do try to correct people when they goof up. However there are certain people who can never be taught. |

It depends how it is done- it can be done either in quite friendly manner, or in a quite patronising way (Sorry dear, you got it all wrong). Im not that fond of people correcting others, I dont think tiny mistakes matter as long as they know what they are talking about and are respectful to you in a conversation. It only irritates me slightly when someone tries to make it look as if they knew everything about a subject, and then go and pronounce everything in a wrong way (I once knew a person who spent literally thousands of dollars on perfume, but could not say any of their names right, way to go). |

I always try to be nice on the message boards that I go to.
There are some people that just drive me nuts though. I guess I don't correct people as often as I used to, mostly cause it is such a waste of time & energy. I would guess that the reason people want to add an "s" to the end of Anime (or Ninja, or LEGO) is that they are used to the normal ways of pluralization of words. Obviously those words are not really normal... |
