I want to hear other people's thoughts on School Days. I'm watching it on Crunchyroll and just finished Episode 4.

Is it remarkable or not? I'm sort of hooked into watching it -- I want to strangle Makoto which I bet is a fairly common reaction. Saionji could use a good smack upside the head as well. On the surface it seems like a pretty ordinary teen romance sort-of comedy with all the standard fare features. Shy/awkward guy that more than one girl wants: check. His oversexed friend: check. His too-shy love interest: check. Boob obsession: check. Water park scene: check. Perky little sister thing: check. It goes on and on. So could someone explain to me why I am still going back for more episodes?

Also, I noticed that the encyclopedia trivia mentioned that the last episode was taken off the air because of a murder in the news. Does anyone have more to the story than that?

You don't worry about that. You just watch the last episode :D.

The original airing is where the "Nice Boat" term came from. There are three endings. One with the Nice Boat airing, one with black and edited and one that's red and uncut. Good times.

We recommend staying away from any type of spoiler-ish material like wiki and whatnot until you've watched it all. Unless you familiar with the game. But all in all, decent series. It drew out some very sincere emotions from me to say the least.

Because it feels good to be able to unambiguously hate a character. The show is kind of trashy and cliche, but it's so very emotional that even if it is a negative emotion, you are invested in what's going on.

I'm thinking you can only watch this show if you don't know what to expect. i mean i already know how it ends and because of that i don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to watch it lol.

I just finished watching it off of fansubs and have to wonder which version of the ending I was watching. If someone's seen all three versions and can explain the differences in appropriate spoiler tags, I'd be very interested in knowing.

And if you hate Makoto after only four episodes, your hatred will only steadily grow. He hasn't gotten to being a true prick yet by that point in the series. Rolling Eyes

Although I found the first three episodes of the series to be rather dull, it got more interesting after that as the relationship dynamics started to get more complicated. Anime romances rarely delve into such messy (but also, unfortunately, realistic - well, at least until the final episode, anyway) territory as this one does.

As far as I know, there are only really two versions; I believe OtakuExile was referring to the preempted episode that was replaced by video live action scenery as the third. Regarding the other two versions, I believe the only notable difference is that spoiler[the blood is colored black in the television version and red in the uncensored DVD release.]

Also, the show has been available free streaming on Crunchyroll for a while now (the censored version of the last episode, if you're wondering, which is only barely censored, by the way).

There are several short video versions in circulation of alternate "bad endings", but these are generally from the game itself. However, as I recall, one particular "bad ending" was made into a short animated sequence, non-game, a while before the anime was released.

Just search Youtube for "school days bad ending", if you want to see some of the game nasties.

As for the anime, I don't think I've ever seen a more disagreeable character in any anime than Makoto. He's really a piece of work.

The uncut version spoiler[features sound effects added to the two murder scenes and some additional shots where the weapons used to kill make contact with the flesh of their victims with some blood particle effects added to when Sekai makes her final strike to Makoto's body with her knife.]

Oh, I came to that conclusion, too, as I watched the last 2-3 episodes. Definitely at odds with what we're used to seeing in anime. Sadly, I've known people exactly like him IRL, only in that case the teenage girl I worked with wasn't discouraged from pursuing the Makoto-like guy despite rumor that he had fathered two kids by different girls and was suspected in one or two other cases. Razz

And then there was the teen student I worked with a couple of school years ago who claimed that his crackhead father had fathered at least nine other siblings "that he knew of" by at least five different women. Razz Razz Razz

The details are in the wiki page for the visual novel but if you watched the fansubs then I believe that should be spoiler[the delayed aired TV version, the 2nd version, with only a minor edit of the blood being black and what Ggultra2764 points out.] spoiler[The DVD version, version 3, should be the unedited version.]

That's how I watched and man, spoiler[I was disturbed by it all.] It was late when I finished and man, I had to spoiler[cleanse myself by watching a few episodes of a purer series. I think I downloaded episodes of pokemon.]

Oh, I came to that conclusion, too,

There's no denying that and I don't think there can be any question he got what he deserved. His sins are numerous.

But.

Why does everyone give the girls a pass on this? spoiler[They betray each other with just as much abandon as Makoto does and in some ways worse. They use him for their own purposes, and in many cases knowing full well that they are helping him cheat on Saonji or on Katsura (depending on which version of the story they subscribe to.) Otonoe and Miki both are opportunists at other girls expense. At one point three girls from the basketball team go to his place to have an orgy. Sekai is fully culpable in stabbing Kotonoha in the back and then when things get dice decides to fake a pregnancy to swing things her way. Setsuna isn't the friend she pretends to be.

Of all of them it is obviously Kotonoha that is the least deserving of what happened to her. Yet even with her there were a number of places that she could have avoided the pain by not indulging in wishful thinking and fantasy. Instead of doing the meek little baby thing she could have confronted Makoto and been willing to walk away if he didn't cut out the nonsense. That sounds harsh and I know there are a lot of girls around that would need to be told that.]
Maybe the best use of this anime is to show girls who are being a dope over some guy like this.

Well that's my take having just finished the series. I think it could have been a lot better and if anything, Makoto got off too easy.

^Not at all, is that harsh, in fact it's truth. spoiler[ Everyone is to blame in that series for the various acts they commit. They all are weak or awful people who gave into their desires, the consequences of which all ended up coming together in a trainwreck of tragedy, insanity, and murder at the end. None of them could ever have imagined that all their selfishness could have accumulated to have that effect, nor was that their intention, but yet it did. ]

Not talking about how despicable the girls are isn't quite the same as giving them a pass. Between Setsuna, Sekai, and Makoto, I can't decide whom I hate most (although I'm leaning towards Setsuna because after what she does and despite leaving the country without letting anyone know seems to still think of herself as Sekai's best friend). It's just so much easier for everyone to lay into Makoto because he's the central character around whom all of the poor decision making and betrayal revolve.
