That's her own damn fault for not supervising what her son reads.
He could've picked up, say, Breaking Dawn, and be traumatized by the bed-breaking sex scene, Bella throwing up a "fountain of blood", or her demon spawn snapping her spine. It's just the luck of the draw that he got, quote, "negatively affected" by manga. EDIT: By the way, I found her Facebook, and she's one of those crazy right-wingers. Here's one of her Facebook activities:

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I'm pretty sure that seeing the "shocking manga" was the least of the issues that sent the poor child to therapy.

1) Gantz I get, but Psychic Academy?? Is that way grittier than the cover makes it look?
2) Libraries need to separate teen and adult graphic novels, period. Mine does, although I had to write in and give them a list of things they really ought to move out of the YA section, like Battle Royale and Transmetropolitan. 3) Parents need to not assume that because it has pictures it is child-appropriate. Even in America, the Comic Codes ended a long time ago. Imagine if he'd picked up The Boys; American comic books would be under fire instead. |

@vash We're already doing the second one, with the mature/yaoi material in the Humanities section along with the Indy comics and select Batman stories.

Look, how do we even know that's her real Facebook page? Anyone can make a Facebook page in someone else's name; and someone angry over this case might easily make one to depict her as a Harry Potter-hating nutjob. I'm not denying the possibility that she is of the Christian strain that somehow thinks mentioning magic in a comic book is the first step towards Satanism, but after the whole Bleach-plagiarizer incident, I no longer trust Facebook. EDIT: @prime_pm: Good! I just know that my library in Iowa City DIDN'T, and I always worried a little about that. Last edited by vashfanatic on Fri Jul 09, 2010 3:29 pm; edited 1 time in total |

You'd think from the description, she was talking about Tokyo Tribes or something.
This is pretty much just an example of a nutjob who needs to put down. This isn't about manga being wrongly placed in a library, or bad supervision, she's just a wacko mother who probably caused more mental problems for her children than all of the worst hentai manga ever could. |

Y'know, I'm trying not to sound like some armchair psychologist, but something tells me her son probably had psychological issues [b]before[/i] coming into contact with material like GANTZ. It's the same argument as violent video games make children more violent. It doesn't hold up to scrutiny, and parents hate it because it actually - gasp! - puts the onus on them to actually parent their children and not just create an easy scapegoat out of something already demonized in the media (death metal, video games, comic books, etc). Also, it sounds like the material were in the section for mature readers, which means it's not like he didn't know there would be mature content in the books. Once again, instead of using the book as a teaching point for stuff you shouldn't do*, she lashed out at the library for doing their job. tl;dr: WHAT YOU MEAN I ACTUALLY HAVE TO WORK AS A PARENT TO MAKE SURE MY CHILD ISN'T READING VIOLENT MATERIAL? MAN, WHAT. *In the case of GANTZ, speaking 'l33t'. Seriously, people still type like that? Geez. |

Her only Facebook status was from March, and I doubt any angry otaku have the ability to travel back in time. |

From what I've heard about Gantz, it really really shouldn't be in the teen section. I think she actually has a very legitimate point there.
That said, it seems pretty apparent from her past history and the other stuff she's complaining about that she is absolutely bat shit insane and I applaud the library for not giving in to her nonsense. |

It's not like the kids even checked it out; he stole it! At the library I worked at, if any child tried to check out adult material, they had to have parental approval-either in person or on their library card. If you don't want your kid reading certain things, then maybe you should take responsibility for him and WATCH him. Don't rain on everyone else's parade!
According to the story, it seems like Gantz was in the adult section, not the teen/kids section. If it was, sure, I could see complaining about that since the rating on the book is 18+. [EDIT: Do not double-post. Use the Edit button instead.~Zalis] |

It wasn't sorted yet. Her son just grabbed the book and stole it. |

She just doesn't want to admit that it's her fault the kids in therapy. You don't get severe psychological issues just from reading a comic book (even Gantz). It's insulting to her son and everyone else in therapy to even suggest it.
I think it's a good thing that library even has manga and a club for it, the libraries around here have nothing. |
