"The Day of the Chief's Disappearance" is when I dropped this boring disparate pile of meandering plot lines back in fansubs. I was astounded that it got licensed. I mean, I've never played Persona, and I didn't like it, and my friends who have completely hated it. Who do they intend to market this to?
If I recall properly, and it's been several years, one of my biggest problems was the choice of the middle brother as the main character. He was boring and flat, whereas the eldest and the youngest had a lot more potential. Overall... it was just dull. And that's not good in something that's supposed to be horror/action, right? |

I remember when I was so psyched about this when this first was announced. However, it totally fooled and disappointed me; it didn't come close to touching what actual Persona is. I mean, I tried giving it a chance, but I just could not for the life of me get into it enough to continue with it. D; The characters were rather....strange too. Hell, the whole plot was extremely strange.
I'll just stick with the great games, thank you very much. xP |

I think this show suffers from what other game to anime shows suffer from, they just don't offer as much as the games do. From Devil May Cry, to Tales of the Abyss(which wasn't bad but not as good as the game) and now this, most people who played the games and watched the shows will agree the games are better. A 26 episode show will last you what 7 to 8 hours, but playing Persona 3 my first time was 155 hours. That's more time with the characters and their world, I just felt more involved. I'm sure there's a better way of explain what games can do for a franchise vs a series, but you won't get that from me. I have to admit though that I liked this series. It felt a lot like Tokyo Majin which I love. I also feel this will turn into a Dragonaut case where everyone will pile on this show because it's the fun thing to do, many not watching enough of the show to pass a legitimate critique but they will do so anyways. Last note when I said "Games" I meant just that not user controlled porn, so please don't bring up Eroge games that have been made into passable anime shows. |

Bummer. I have no idea about this title since I haven't played the game. But I was sort of hoping it would buck the trend of video game adaptations and actually deliver something good.
How does this title compare with something like Ghost Hunt? I was sort of thinking of ordering it, but it is a bit on the expensive side and I have no way of sampling it legally. (is it streaming anywhere?) |

See, as many problems as this show has (and boy does it ever have a lot), that's not one of them. Mainly because this is in no way a game-to-anime adaptation. Seriously. There is nothing there that in any way connects tonally to the previous entries in the franchise. You can't just say "HEY LOOK, IGOR AND PERSONAS! IT'S TOTALLY JUST LIKE THE GAMES, GUYS!" |

Good job describing Persona 4. What about Persona 3 though? Wasn't that the one that completely fell apart at it's midpoint with plot-holes and laughable "twists" and utterly worthless villains? I liked P3's PC cast (sans Ken), but other than that it had a lot of problems. P4 really refined a lot of things that were wrong with it and came out the better game (In a similar way Suikoden 2 refined Suikoden 1's ideas and did them better). EDIT: Admittedly, the finale of The Journey was well done (post final boss I'm talking about). Just... so much dreck to wade through to get to that point. I digress though. Trinity Souls is... okay. Just shy of mediocre. There's so little tying it to P3 though. Poor Akihiko... The Count, is that 155 hours for just The Journey? Or is that for both The Journey and The Answer? If the former... what the heck did you spend so much time on? |

@Hunter Sopko Just The Journey I haven't built up the will to play The Answer. As far as what was I doing, I don't know  . I see reviewers say "this game will take about 60hrs", then I play it and it take over twice the time for me to beat it. But that's been the trend for me in all RPG's it for some reason that me longer than what others say it will.
I just recently played the FES version and I won't even tell you how much time I spent the second time around.

I'm, curious about this myself, I mean, I absolutely adored Persona 3 FES (although I have talked myself out of buying P3PSP because Dragon Quest 9 comes out the week afterwards, dammit! And I cannot justify buying a re-release over a new game, maybe when the used price goes down on P3PSP....) and yet no one who has liked either P3 or P4 seems to like this series. I cannot perform memory wipe so it's too late for me, but that does rather make me not want to touch it with a 10 foot pole. I'm happy with P3 from a story and characters perspective (really wish I could've controlled people directly in battle) so I can't imagine this going over well with me. And when people who don't play games aren't pleased, you know something's wrong in a way that will only infuriate the game fans even more. Of course, at the same time, the people most likely to have heard about the show are the people who have played the game....well darn. |

I think The Count has some valid points – thought it does seem like he must have fallen asleep at the helm to rack up such insane hours of playtime in P3. But I digress, how can you expect the same from an short anime series and a massive RPG?
And in that same regard, is it really fair to bash this series so vehemently just because it didn’t live up to the expectations of the video game? Nowhere in the Trinity Soul synopsis or press releases does it say “Hey guys, check out Persona 5 in anime form!” I could be wrong here, but isn’t it just supposed to be a completely original new story that contains Persona mythos/world view? In that case, I don’t really see what they did wrong aside from making what could be considered a somewhat cliché mystery/high school anime! I’ve written a few reviews in my time, and I do feel the pain of a massive IP’s name being slapped on to something that doesn’t quite live up to our preconceived notions… Just look at anything with the Final Fantasy label! It’s hard, and I’m usually right alongside everyone else bashing The Spirits Within, FFXIII, that lame anime…anything Crystal Chronicles related… you name it – but this is one time I have to disagree! First of all, the review doesn’t even mention the quality of a newcomer’s localization efforts. It’s pretty clear NISA gave some reverent treatment to the original subject matter with a translation much more enjoyable than most professional, official dubs/subs. Whenever I review something, I try to address the entire experience- right down to the box art and how easy the subtitles are to see! Finally, the complaints about the story cliffhangers were completely irrelevant. Imagine me saying “I just saw the 3rd episode of Lost and I can officially say it’s terrible because it doesn’t explain anything and has a bunch of stupid cliffhangers…bawww…bawww..baaaawwwww!” I’ve seen a lot of shows in this genre that don’t start to come together until the last quarter of the series- and yet those are hailed as masterpieces! Now- if by the end of the series, Persona Trinity Soul all turns out to be a dream and Shin is actually just lying somewhere dead… then you can blast the hell out of the story’s dangling plot holes and lackluster resolutions all you want! D+ really? Maybe B- or C+ for being a bit clichéd. |

I watched the first episode of this way back when. The character designs were nice and I liked the visuals overall, but the utterly generic "hey I just had that recurring dream again where I transformed and fought a big monster" bit (gee guys I wonder if that's going to happen before the end of the episode) killed my enthusiasm right off the bat.
On the other hand it does come in a really nice box. As for the games, I've only played the third one. I loved it but never beat it- in fact I'm pretty sure I didn't even get a quarter of the way through- due to how insanely long and difficult it was. (I should mention that this was well after seeing the anime, so my expectations of the show were not coloured by the game). |
