I read the French translation, which has been compleply released for quite a while now. Before it was licensed in English, scanlations were available online, so some people might have read it through those.

That's how 99% of the people read the manga...through scanlation. Well any scanlation is illegal whether it's licensed or not. I mean you're taking someone's work, editing it and redistrubing it. Even to this day, with licensed manga, people are still selling licensed scanlation.

GTO Manga has a lot more story line than the anime. The anime ends a little after the field trip to Okinawa and did not resolve the Mr. Teshigawara problem, which is currently is building to a climax with the soon to be released volume 19 of GTO.

I'd look it up but I'm lazy, so how many volumes of the manga did the anime series use before it ended?

I think the TV series concluded with volume 13 of the manga. What I hate about that is one of my favorite characters shows up in volume 14, so he's not in the TV series. And, as was pointed out, there are too many loose threads in the TV series.

There's a grand total of 25. Then there're the prequels, a one shot and a series, the series is being released in French in the magazine-type book "Shonen" which is very much akin to Shonen Jump, but I don't think either is licensed in English.
