Lyuze I don't understand why this matchup isn't closer. Well, no, I do understand. Too many people have not seen Casshern Sins. That is the only reason I can formulate that Christopher Armalite is beating Lyuze so badly. Lyuze is one of the strongest characters in the bracket, and I really think people should go back and look over this matchup.

Exactly. I'm still waiting for people who voted for Christopher over Lyuze to explain why. Because she should win this match, if we're talking relative merits.

As for the Takumi match-up, I've only seen the first few episodes of Excel Saga, but I will say that nearly every second he's on the screen Takumi manages to wallop a new one at the viewer. This includes spoiler[getting Hachi pregnant, then, in a surprise reverse move asking her to marry him, separating the two protagonists, breaking up Hachi's relationship with Nobu, and generally turning her world upside down by making her suddenly rich and making her leave all her friends. All in the space of twenty odd episodes.]

I did explain my reasoning in this post and feel no need to repeat myself.

And while you two may think this is obvious, I don't see it that way. Admittedly, I only saw a handful of episodes of Casshern Sins, but Lyuze did not make that much of an impression on me - certainly not to the extent that Chris does in the same amount of time, anyway. Besides, Chris is hardly a borderline inclusion in this tournament; I'd even go as far as naming him one of the top contenders on the bottom side of the Group A bracket, given what all he does in SP. (Kimura certainly doesn't deserve to beat him, anyway.)

Lyuze certainly sounds like a worthy opponent, and I'd probably buy the arguments for her against a lesser foe (i.e. almost anyone else on the bottom side of the group), but she had the misfortune of hitting a tough one in the first round.

Nabeshin vs. Takumi:

Nabeshin is great comedy relief. From his appearances in Excel to his cameo in Hayate, he's a very likable character who doesn't take much to get you laughing.

Takumi, on the other hand, is very love/hate. He's definitely cool, but he can also be quite the bastard. Whether or not you want to stab him depends on your view of his actions.

I don't think there's any clear superior contender here; it's down to preference. I voted for Takumi because I can relate to him in some ways and I just like characters like him. I don't think either contender in this match will go too far, so it probably doesn't matter who does win.

Yes, I read your reasoning, and of course Christopher is a worthy foe. But what you have to understand about CS is that for the first half it's an episodic journey--meaning it's focused on Casshern meeting various other characters. Lyuze is in the background of these episodes after her initial entrance--though it is she who initially questions Casshern's existence and new personality, and tells him that his amnesia is no absolution from his past.

However (and I'm not sure which episodes you saw) Lyuze is much more important in the second half. She teaches Casshern about love, forgiveness, and ultimately, with spoiler[her death, she conveys to him exactly what every human and robot felt when the world was destroyed; he finally understands the full extent of his destruction and feels true remorse ], which in turn leads him to his final actions. She teaches him a wealth of other lessons, too, such as what it means to truly live. Casshern has always felt cursed by his immortal life, but in Lyuze's spoiler[final days, he learns what it's like to treasure each day one at a time. He experiences a kind of mortality for the first time, by watching his beloved die.]

The point I'm making here is that people who have seen both series in their entirety are voting for Lyuze (admittedly, I haven't seen the last five episode of SP). If there's someone who has seen both and has a counterargument, I'd like to hear it. If not, this is a clearly a case of underexposure.

So is Scrapped Princess. Where Pacifica goes around meeting various people, one of whom is Christopher and she changes HIS life, not the other way around. He questions why Pacifica spoiler[has to die] and in doing so, not only changes his life but the lives of his subordinates, as well as Prince Forsythe and Winia.

Christopher is an honest and loyal man who discovers that he and the people he has sworn to protect have been lied to for millenia and sets out to do what he can to rectify the situation.

I don't get it with Match A-4. Itoko provided both advice and torment to Harima who's a major character yet Toki doesn't really do much to impact Princess Mononoke. What has many folks voting for her? Confused

Round 1 Group A is now closed.

Final results as follows:

A-1: Maes Hughes def. Yue Ayase 31-1
A-2: Eri Ninamori def. Naru Osaka 23-9
A-3: Haruka Tenoh def. Setsuna 29-3
A-4: Toki def. Itoko Osakabe 18-14
A-5: Nabuca def. Neya 25-7
A-6: Kazuko Yoshiyama def. Mendoza 21-11
A-7: Genkai def. Rick Thunderbolt 18-14
A-8: Nana def. Olivier Mira Armstrong 19-13
A-9: Lt. Yamamoto def. Tetsu 24-8
A-10: Christopher Armalite def. Lyuze 19-13
A-11: Kimura def. Satoshi Miwa 23-9
A-12: Edel def. Oji-san 25-7
A-13: Alex Rowe def. Reiko Natsume 24-8
A-14: Renge Hoshakuji def. Jung Freud 22-10
A-15: Ushio Okazaki def. Lory Takarada 24-8
A-16: Nabeshin def. Takumi 18-14

Yes, I know this is a new format for doing this, but I'm going to try it for a couple of groups and see how I like it.

Anyway, out of 32 votes we had five matches won with less than 60% of the vote total and only two that were total blow-outs. I suspect that future rounds will continue to be fairly tight.

Next round should be up in a few minutes.

Group B-2

November 11, Darker Than Black

Group B-3

Dryden Fassa, The Vision of Escaflowne

Group B-4

Shihoun Yoruichi, Bleach

Group B-5

Dr. Reichwein, Monster

Group B-6

Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic! franchise

Group B-7
Shikamaru, Naruto franchise

Group B-8

Toya Kinomoto/Tori Avalon, Cardcaptor Sakura/Cardcaptors

Group B-9

Ichiro Mihara, Angelic Layer

This one is hard because I like both characters but I’m going with Icchan because of the “weird (perverted?) scientist factor and because he loves spoiler[Misaki’s mother and wants the two of them to be together and happy and is willing to manipulate Misaki to attain that goal.]

Group B-10

Winry Rockbell, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise

Group B-11

Cornelia li Britannia, Code Geass

Group B-12

Komui Lee, D-Gray Man

Group B-13

Leopold Scorpse, Scrapped Princess

Group B-14
Reika Mishima, RahXephon

Group B-15

Tatiana Wisla, Last Exile

This one was difficult, as well, because I like both characters very much but I’m going to go with Tatiana for now, because of her “fall” and subsequent “rise.”

Group B-16
Misaki Kirihara, Darker Than Black franchise

Kurotowa, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Leopold

Group B-14
Walter von Schenkopp, Legend of the Galactic Heroes franchise
vs.
Reika Mishima, RahXephon

Reika

Despite my personal dislike of Von Schenkopp and the massive plot armour he carried around with him, I will admit that he did do quite a bit in Legend of the Galactic Heroes. He was insightful and even funny, and he made some big plot breakthroughs. He is not a weak candidate.

However, RahXephon simply couldn't have worked without Reika. She was an integral part, as she made a heck of a lot happen, both story-wise and in terms of the characters' respective arcs. If anyone wants to know more, I'd be happy to give a run down of her achievements. It's quite a list.

Looked at dispassionately, she is clearly the superior contender here.

Group B-15
Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise
vs.
Tatiana Wisla, Last Exile

Spoor

Group B-16
Misaki Kirihara, Darker Than Black franchise
vs.
Torioi Kiyori, Sasemeki Koto

Misaki

Well, certainly sad to not see Mendoza move on, I really do chalk this up to almost no one having seen MCOG. Even I was torn between Rick and Genkai, so I certainly plan to support her for a while now.

B-1: Elfriede
B-2: Akira Ferrari
B-3: Franz d'Epinay
I've seen all of Escaflowne and part of Gankutsuou, I don't even recall Dryden to be honest despite having actually finished that series.
B-4: Yoruichi
I've always felt Fred Lou to be comic relief first, supporting Gene second.

Vote Change:
B-5: Jack
Arguments have convinced me that Dr. Reichwein is from a more popular series but not necessarily as necessary to the story or other characters as Jack.

B-6: Kittan
B-7: Shikamaru
B-8: Roy Fokker
I've seen Robotech and read Card Captor Sakura. This is an easy one for me, Toya acts like a good big brother when absolutely needed, but the story honestly barely calls for him. On the other hand, Roy's influence is always there even if he isn't.
B-9: Ichiro Mihara
B-10: Winry Rockbell Believe or not, Uchiyamda defends Onizuka working at Holy Forest Academy. In the manga.
B-11: Shuichi Natori

Vote Change:
B-12: Hosaka
Aside from not having actually seen either series, arguments have convinced me that Hosaka deserves to move on more and since I've no personal connection to either character, I think I'll go for the one with some actual backing behind him. The fact that everyone who voted for him is shocked he's losing seems a bit suspicious to me too.

B-13: Leopold Scorpse
B-14: Walter von Schenkopp
Everyone who has seen the series should know why I vote for him. After a point, Julian also joins the Rosenritters and Walter von Schenkopp is a great mentor to him, as well as a badass.
B-15: Letopanyu Spoor
I felt Tatiana was more a rival than actually useful as a supporting.
B-16: Torioi Kiyori

Match B-1: Balalaika (Black Lagoon)

Match B-2: Akira Ferrari (Aria)

Match B-3: Franz d'Epinay (Gankutsuou)
The fact Franz is acquainted with the Count from what I've heard of the series has me going for Franz.

Match B-4: Shihouin Yoruichi (Bleach)
Helped trained Ichigo's friends on perfecting their powers and plays a major role in helping Ichigo's group out during the Soul Society arc. A lot more involvement than Fred's weapon supplying and comic relief.

Match B-5: Dr. Richwein (Monster)
The good doctor does enough to aid Tenma, gather information and having to look after those Tenma has rescued.

Match B-6: Kruz Weber (Full Metal Panic)

Match B-7: Shikamaru (Naruto)

Match B-8: Roy Focker (Macross)

Match B-9: Kanami Yuta (s-Cry-ed)
spoiler[Her influence on Kazuma and Ryuho throughout the series lead the two to later set aside their rivalry to deal with a bigger threat.]

Match B-10: Winry Rockbell (Full Metal Alchemist)
Surrogate sister, automail mechanic and wrench-tossing fiend for Ed and Al.

Match B-11: Cornelia li Britannia (Code Geass)

Match B-12: Komui Lee (D-Gray Man)

Match B-13: Leopold Scorpse (Scrapped Princess)

Match B-14: Reika Mishima (RahXephon)
Her very influence is what starts off Ayato's search for the truth of his existence.

Match B-15: Tatiana Wisla (Last Exile)

Match B-16: Misaki Kirihara (Darker than Black)
