Based on Vertical's previous releases (or upcoming), I am going to guess this could be Galaxy Express 999 or another Leiji Matsumoto manga. Viz did release a newer version of GE999 in 1998.
Of course, this is just wishful thinking by me. |

Wait, what other Matsumoto manga did they publish?

Random guess: the R refers to Rumiko Takahashi and the project is Urusei Yatsura? I dunno. Viz has published so many mangaka it's hard to narrow it down.

They didn't, they only released the anime. Is it too much for me to hope that they mean Yawara!? Well, since I don't want it flipped, maybe I should hope it isn't.... But let's think about the "R" here. Reiji/Leiji Matsumoto might be a guess on that, except that Viz hasn't released any of his manga. I'm rolling through major unlicensed titles in my head, but I can't think of any that might be coded as "R" but also are from an author Viz has released. Edit: @bahamut They do a lot of retro stuff, so I think that would be a good guess! |

I would love for that to be true. |

I actually hope it's Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura. I'm not that big of a fan of R. Takahashi, but this series is something I would love to get into.

Am I the only one that groaned a little about how cliched this whole thing feels??
Still, it would be awesome if it was Urusei Yatsura or Yawara. |

Yawara was never published by Viz. One thing's for sure, though. They sure as hell can't mean Flame of Recca. Could be R.O.D., however...Or Utena. Or Red River.

I'm really hoping it's Moto Hagio, seeing how she fits Vertical's classic shoujo pattern.

I think I know what it is, since Scott tweeted that it's from Tezuka, it's gotta be Ribon No Kishi.

They say Author not a title previously published by Viz. So it could be Yawara but my guess is it wouldn't be the title. Also knowing the stuff Vertical releases I highly doubt it is any of the titles you listed. I'd guess Leiji Matsumoto or Moto Hagio seem the most likely choices. |

......VIZ released one of the Galaxy Express 999 mangas, about 5 volumes of it, which they serialized in Animerica. I think it was a later revival series Matsumoto did as a sequel to the original, though it works for VIZ to do so since they had the movies out on VHS at the time they started publishing it. http://www.powells.com/biblio/61-9781569315286-0 Here's a used bookstore listing http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/8kC5pov=UWDHhgTU9z/browse/item/56864/4/0/0 RightStuf has some in stoc ktoo I'm hoping it's either Captain Harock, or Urusei Yatsura. |
