I don't think the problem is that people don't know about anime, manga, etc. content...
The problem is monetizing it in the age of the internet and the fact that there are more people who don't care for it than there are people who do. Japanese entertainment is for a niche audience and they may just have to accept that. |

No. Go out on the street and ask someone "what is anime" most of them won't have a clue what your saying. Or if they do they will only know about Pokemon. Still I agree the bigger problem at hand is trying to get the "fans" to buy anime, or watch legally at the very least. Because let's face it, anime "fans" is anime's worst enemy. If even half of the so called "fans" (still) bought DVDs, the market would be in a very different place right now. Anyway I can only see this as a good thing. The Japanese government being interesting in promiting anime is never bad. More money, being thrown at more things like this can only be good. It's great to see this new administration also wants anime to succeed for the long time, and over seas. The last administration wanted this IIRC and started along these lines, and it's great to see it didn't get dropped or disapear. |

Well, it's the beginning of the financial year over there. The time countries spend lots of money with stuff. And stuff like this. And stuff like that.

The REAL problem is that they mainly make pro-moe, pro-otaku, anti-shounen $### like (anything KyotoAnimu makes) on down.
And then there's the "pigeon-hole" mental stagnation where everything must be semi-yaoi, cruel parodies, and like Naruto if it's not pro-otaku. To the so-called "fans," anything that relies on expert story-telling and actual character development DOESN'T EXIST. To say that "they're going down the wrong path" is to say that no money is being made off of anime in the West. And if that's the case; then all the Best Buys, Frys, and online sites wouldn't sell them for so long. It sounds to good to be true. If anything; it's an extremely well-played 4/1 joke.

I shall withhold judgement on this news at present. The promotion of anime abroad is certainly of importance to non-Japanese fans, but I do not yet know the extent to which these plans would affect specific markets and countries.

That's what I think whenever I see news like this. It's written in the most general terms possible. JAPAN is gonna spend 10,000,000,000 yen to promote JAPANESE CONTENT in other places that AREN'T JAPAN. Is that a general enough headline for anyone?!!! What are they gonna start running anime commercials on US TV? That may not make any sense, but at least that would make a headline I could understand. |

My take is that government meddling is never a good thing, even if it is seemingly positive or for good intentions. Just look around here in the US. (compare how GM and Chrysler is doing to Ford now)
particularly when it goes beyond simple charitable investments (e.g. grants, tax breaks, 0% loans to the industry, etc, which alone can be helpful) to the realm of influence and control. Since in this program, the government would be dealing with foreign markets for the anime industry, I can't help but think that it can have a negative impact when some controversy erupts after someone abroad decides to complain about something. (the DPJ isn't much different LDP in this regards.. heck, nor for the rest of politics) Another thing to keep in mind is this: 
which shows anime/manga/otaku culture may have a wider, even if niche, reach than local DVD sales suggest. I don't think even Japan realizes this since this is derived from local US statistics like Neilson, and NPD, who uses point-of-sales (merchant) data. So most sales of figures, toys, wallscrolls, char cds, etc in N.America and abroad may be misconstrued as domestic sales by the Japanese industry. |

this is probably just an aprils fool joke, but if the japanese anime companies want to sell to more people, start adding an english subtitle track to at least their blu-rays, and watch how fast people start importing shows, there are a few I would get right now if they offered subtitles on blu-ray, I would be the proud owner of ladies versus butlers right now if they did that

Budget allocation:
75% adding multi-language subtitles to every DVD and BD release and removing the region coding. 25% hiring somebody to track down the encoders for Funimation, Manga Ent, Crunchyroll et al, and kick them repeatedly in the teeth until they learn to do their jobs correctly and consistently. |
