GAH! Too many times have I read a manga and hated the art work. . . .but then ended up reading the whole series due to the great plot lines, or I've just becomed hook! I hate it! There so many out there like that! Hot Gimmick, X-day, Kill me Kiss me, Juvenile Orion (actually the story line for this was pretty crappy also. . .), Kodacho, and many many more.

If you have this problem . . .I feel the pain! Mad

Hey, if the story is good enough, the artwork can be irrelevant. Cause the story is what it's all about. I'd rather have a manga with great story and mediocre artowork rather than a fancy-shmancy manga with zero plot.

One Piece art took me a while to get used to. I don't think it's bad (it actually evolves into having really detailed backgrounds) but it's so different from what you usually see.

Pretty much what Satsuki said.

I was really disappointed in the artwork of Gunslinger Girl, but the story was so intese and intriguing that by the end of the book, I didn't care anymore.

I haven't looked into the manga-ka for Gunslinger Girl yet, but the artist seems to be a newbie whom hasn't quite gotten the hang of things yet. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop

Yes, I'd rather have a good storyline with not-so-great artwork, also. But I dunno, I guess finding one with both can sometimes, be rare. Oh and Gunslinger Girl, I couldn't get into it because most of the girls looked too much alike, and I kept getting confused Anime dazed But I'm pretty sure the artist is a newbie.

I only read manga with good art, since I never get as far as finding out what the story is once I skim though the bad art and put the book back on the rack Smile

If something has a bad story I'll stop reading it, but that takes a little longer (and often happens after I spend the money on it).

I wonder why people with good stories and bad art aren't writing novels instead...

Since I'm an art student and always buying things with art I like, I swing both ways in that department. The art has to be really exceptional though if there is virtually no story.

the beginning Oh! My Goddess is so ugly, but the pain of looking at that horrible art pays off later on when it becomes beutiful. same thing with Berserk, though it wasn't that bad looking at the begining

You've got a good point, Kagemusha. Some authors started out with bad art in the first few chapters but really improved as time went on. When judging the art, I look at the second volume of the series.

I wonder if Fujishima was starting OMG and YUA at the same time... they each start off with bad art for a few chapters and then improve. Or maybe it just takes him awhile to get each individual style down.

You must also realize that after you draw the same characters a few hundred times, you get better at it! lol.

Remember Ranma way back when? Compare the difference between book 1 and book 15 (or whatever). The drawing style often evolves as much as the characters do.

When the manga was written definately affects how the art is, you know. Manga from the 80's or early 90's looks a lot different than more recent. I find earlier stuff a bit ugly, but that's just my opinion. Also, if you're reading a manhwa, Korean art is a bit different, I like that art, but some people don't. Anyway, I'd rather read a manga with a good storyline and bad art, than a manga with fabulous art and a horrible storyline, but that's just me. I agree about Hot Gimmick having bad art. When I was first reading it I almost stopped, the girls looked reeeeeally bad. But I think they look better by the fourth (or maybe I'm just getting used to it). Anyhow, I think the guys are drawn prettier than the girls.

Now that I think about it, Matantei Loki has REALLY bad art in the first couple volumes, but it turns into really nice stuff eventually.

I only get ones I like the artwork on. I flip through it at the store and if the artworks is crappy I just chuck it and look some more...I have alot of them too, so that says how many series have good artwork compared to the amount with bad.

I have to defend Kill Me, Kiss Me. I love the artwork, maybe just me, but seriously, that's one of my favorite styles of artwork. I look for other mangas/manwhas like it. I seriously have to agree with Gunslinger Girl though, their faces seemed rather squarish, and their lips were just these lines, somehow different than the normal lines. I thoroughly dislike the artwork of Hellsing, oh and Trigun. I cannot get used to it. Not sure why, but I still read it occassionally. The worst thing is that I love all of the above storylines.
