I watched the dub with the subs for the japanese showing, just to compare. The translation is pretty good and so are the voices. But how come there's no cursing in the dub? I never cared if there were any curse words in an anime or not but in the sub, they say damn and hell alot. This dub has all blood and stuff but Vegeta still says "Darnit" while the sub says "Dammit". What the HFIL is up with that?

In terms of cursing, I don't think there's really a literal transaltion for some of the words they use in Japanese. It's more like an implied expression that's already understood by the native speakers. Kind of like how "damn" is usually understood as a sign of something bad happening (in English), whereas in Japanese, kusau is more like a a word that just means the same thing. You don't necessarly have to interpret it to know what's happening, so long as you know it's something bad.

Well, that's I think anyway... I could be wrong...

As for the dub, I hate it of course. I can't stand the voices, the acting, or the horrible soundtrack. But that's just me... Rolling Eyes.

Why is there no cursing? Because, aside from movie seven and various points in the series, there never has been any cursing in Dragonball Z's dub. Or in Dragonball or Dragonball GT for that matter. That's just how it is.

Actually, in the first DBGT dvds, one of the robots said hell. I don't really think hell count as a curse word but in the tv version, they replaced hell with "scrapheap".

I don't know why everone keeps attacking the dub. I liked it even though I still thought the sub was better. The voices and the acting in the dub are just as good as in the sub. As for the music, well, I agree, that the music in the dub is horrible. But that's only because of the timing. I found out that one of the bands who played was the famous metal band, pantera. But even so they shoulda've left the music alone.

Well for me, I've been watching this show in English ever since the Ocean Group started doing it, and in case you didn't know, I am really partial to the Ocean Group.

And when FUNimation took over the dubbing duties, I've always considered them (the FUNimation VAs) to just be bad Ocean Group impersonators with not a whole lot of skill.

Don't get me wrong though. I'm sure they've used DBZ as learning process to get a better feel for their performances and everything, and I'm sure a lot of them sound much better in some of their more current projects, but I don't think I'll ever be able to forget the garbage I think is FUNimation's DBZ dub (nothing personal to those reading this who are a part of FUNimation.)

I really can't see why people like DBZ or Yu Yu Hakusho they are just fighting animes with really little or no plot at all. a Guy comes and says O you were with my wife and they fight. And many fights have no theme and practically no meaning. Talk about a big monster, which looks like art coming out of a kid's notebook, fighting some kids.

If you wanted to make your big point against shounen action series, there are two things you could've done to really make your presence felt.

1. Composed yourself using a better grasp of grammar & spelling. The more legible and well-spoken you are, the more seriously you'll be taken, not to mention it is one of our rules.

2. Try opening a new thread on the subject in the Anime Forum, and not just dredging up a 3-4 month old thread in Talkback that's clearly dropped into a hearty state of disuse and disinterest. That way you'll be starting fresh, and you won't be confusing things by making old news appear right alongside today's hot, hot headlines.

And for that, locked.
