The long awaited return of Shakugan no Shana has finally arrived and I am sad to say, it is business as usual in the realm of the flame haze. The new Shakugan no Shana S OVA(Episode 1), is a return to the same tired unoriginal filler we are accustomed to seeing; since the airing of the uninspired, filler plagued, second season. While my mood about the future of the series is outright pessimistic at the moment, I still am trying to be optimistic about the next three episodes. I was sincerely hoping for a return to the same brand of excellent storytelling that we consistently saw throughout the first season. Unfortunately, the first episode of the OVA definitely does not show any sign of a return to form. I was under the impression that this four episode OVA would help to serve as a launching point for a third season of Shana, which is rumored to be the last in the series. Instead, we are presented with an extremely overused plot device, which resembles an episode of the many bad Saturday morning cartoons from my youth. Maybe, I am just putting too much stock into the Shana franchise, but I truly hope the remaining episodes of the OVA can turn around a franchise, desperately in need of a shock from a defibrillator.

Are you kidding me? I laughed my a** off watching this episode (mainly when Shana covered Yuji's eyes, if you get what I mean). If every filler were like this we'd live in a much happier world.
Well, the number of episodes wasn't confirmed yet, was it? ANN entry says 2 releases so far, but not limited to.
I'm surprised you'd create a thread just to show your pessimism about this anime...

"Desperately in need of a shock from a defibrillator"? I actually liked the second season more than the first. They had at last brought WMDs on the battlefield, so it was fun. Sure, Yuuji still has less brains than your average tree, but he managed to stay focused sometimes; Yoshida was even more annoying during the season, but the end took care of that (hopefully... I'm sure she will come back to haunt us, spoiler[maybe being possessed by some kind of enemy because of Yuuji's rejection]... meh, at least she's great in the specials).

Anyways, this episode was sorta fun, and they did say the OVAs were going to focus on character relations and not the main story, so I thought it would be something like this.

(one thing I don't understand, why was there an old Soviet poster at 14:40 ish, do they just like to insert random art?)

I too enjoyed the second series a lot more than the first one. There was more action, and Yuji wasn't just dead weight anymore. I also laughed quite a bit during this OVA and really enjoyed it.

I don't know if we're getting more though. The page doesn't say anything about how many episodes there will be if any more than the current one. There was that news article a while back about plans for a 3rd season after it though.

I liked it, for one it used a plot point that I have seen a lot in American cartoons, but I haven't seen used in a lot of anime, except for Natsu no Arashi. And the "urusai urusai urusai" Laughing , you could argue it was more of the same, but there was a lot which hadn't been in another episode.

I am glad that at least some of you out there enjoyed the Shana OVA; regrettably, I cannot share your enthusiasm. I sincerely hope that my first impression of the OVA will be wrong, because I am truly pulling for this series to return to its former glory.
In response to the length and release schedule of the Shana OVA, I have come across some information. Please keep in mind; this is not from a creditable source (Comment on YouTube). The Shana OVA will consist of four episodes, which will be released on October 2009, February 2010, March 2010 and August 2010. Following the conclusion of the OVA, the third and final season of Shakugan no Shana will air in the fall of 2010.

Unfortunately, hope is the next door neighbour to despair.
If that's correct, and if it really consists of 4 episodes, then I really doubt there's gonna be any real plot.
Well, as long as they don't throw that [bologus] romance at us.

It's a stopgap, not a prelude. The material is directly adapted from the published sidestories (Ep. 8-9 of Season 2 was another sidestory they adapted), so expect one-shot stories that delve a bit more into the characters. That's all Geneon promised.

Well, I wasn't expecting much to start with, maybe that's why I wasn't disappointed. I didn't really see any glory in the first two seasons, they were enjoyable (mostly because of Shana herself), but not much more.

I thought we'd see a new Shana season in Spring though. Should've realized they take longer than that with OVAs. What I don't understand is - does this take place after the second season, or alongside it?

well there reason why it has set anything up for season 3, is because the OVA episodes are just supposed to further character realationships

Any chance you can post the link to this uncredible source? 4 episodes over a year is a heartbreaker in a waiting period...

I got some other worse info...

I just found and watched episode 2 of Shakugan no Shana S. Hmmmmmm... Is it just me or did Shana change from a tsundere into a K-ON character? The story was even more pathetic than last time. What happened to whoever wrote the script for the first 2 seasons? Did they get fired or something? GeminiDS85 was right. This show's future is looking more bleak with every episode.

Meh, I enjoyed the second season more than first. It had more action, more comedy and more high school love triangles... basically more of everything I enjoyed about the series. The first ova episode didn't really have any action, but I thought it was a funny comedy episode of the show.

I feel like if a comic book artist drew everything in that episode, some people would be calling it great or a return to form rather than saying it's terrible in every conceivable way and that the series is doomed.
