Hi all, I'm about to complete Chobits and Cardcaptor Sakura and debating which new manga titles to get into. There are so many I want to read but I can't afford to read like, 8 titles at once, so I was hoping someone here could help me!
I am leaning towards shorter manga series since it helps save money, but I read the first volume of Please Save My Earth at Borders while my boyfriend was busy looking at superhero comics, and was immediately hooked and captivated. I realise this is a long series but I really want to read the rest...I also want to read Alice 19th (never read anything else by Yuu Watase but I love her artwork and Alice 19th seems to have a Hinduism theme, which I like), Uzumaki (ever since getting to into Ring I've been wanting to get into more Japanese horror, and this sounds really interesting), and Suki (just because I love Clamp and it's a short series). So out of these four series, which one, or two, do you recommend? (Taking both series length and quality into account) I hate having to choose! Seriously, as sad as this sounds, I've come close to agonising over which series to bypass.
To get a better sense of what I like, my favorites are CCS, Chobits, Clover, Planet Ladder, Sailor Moon, Shirahime-Syo, and Ring manga.
Also, does anyone know what other Ring manga are going to be published in English besides the two based on the movies?
Thank you so much for your help!!

Please do do do get Please Save My Earth. Perhaps that's the best thing I can recommend. Yeah, I know it's a long series, but let's just say that it's worth it that much.
Other titles... If you like CLAMP then you should check out some of their other works, namely X and Tokyo Babylon. I'm no real fan of Yuu Watase, but others will tell you to get her stuff as well.
Try Angel Sanctuary as well. If you can stomach it then you'll be in for a wild ride (and absolutely gorgeous artwork). It's another long series though...
Hope this helped.

Hmmmm... for a good CLAMP title, I'd reccomend Wish or X/1999 (aka just plain X.) Yuu Watase, my favorite of hers is Ceres: Celestial Legend, but Alice 19th is good too.

I haven't read Please Save My Earth or Uzumaki, but I have read Alice 19th and I wholeheartedly recommend it. The series actually has a lot of Norse Mythology ( I don't know anything about Hinduism to know whether it plays a part too ) The cool thing about the series is that it has a magical girl framework (which judging from your fav series, you seem to enjoy), but doesn't use this style as a crutch to simply deliver generic "save the world" episodes. The "power of words" is the theme of Alice 19th, and even though this is supposed to be the "magical" part of the manga, the fact that people cause so much pain to each other through mere words is what makes this series so true to life. Oh, and I must guiltily admit that I love the romance and the love triangle(s) that develop in Alice 19th Yu Watase includes a love triangle in almost all her manga series, but they all turn out differently, so that's half the fun in reading her work. I'm so sorry you can take on only a couple of series right now, because Watase's Fushigi Yugi and Ceres are the best Anyway, since Alice is only 7 volumes, go for it!
I've also read 2 volumes of Suki. While I can't recommend it for everyone, if you're a fan of Clamp's "cute" manga like CCS you might enjoy it. Be prepared to tolerate an insufferably naive and cheerful protagonist and rather slow moving narrative (it's only 3 volumes I know, but not much happens in the first place). Still, Clamp always has interesting things to say about love (if you ever read Man of 20 Faces- only 2 volumes!-you'll know what I mean), so Suki is sort of their manga series dealing with innocent love.
By the way, you don't need to let college poverty get in the way of reading manga! About half the manga I've read I've borrowed, so go out and make some other manga-reading friends at an anime club or something ( I lend out many titles as well, so I'm not being a mooch ) Public libraries (although probably not college ones) are starting to acquire a fair amount of manga, which has saved me a lot of money. Also, I would go to amazon.com and choose a particular manga title, then click on "new and used" on one of the side bars on that manga's page to find independent merchants who sell that title for cheaper. Since they all sell through amazon.com, these merchants are more or less reliable. As long you buy a decent amount of manga, you'll more than make up for the shipping costs though savings.
Umm wow, long post. Anyway, enjoy!

Please Save My Earth.
I've had this series for over 10 years, and have never thought of getting rid of it. I usually sell my manga to Book Off once I get tired of them, but it never happened with PSME. Once in a while, I get the urge to reread everything
Another such manga series is BASARA. That's a long one, too, though (27 volumes).
I used to like Fushigi Yuugi, but got tired of it and sold them all. Same with all the other Watase Yuu manga. I liked her stuff when I was in middle school and high school. My tastes have changed since then.
I have never been into CLAMP. Their manga are too doujinshi-like for me. I like their artwork, though. I love them as illustrators (for novels).

This is another must get. Art is also quite distinctive for this one, you either love it or you hate it. I suggest you read a few at a local bookstore before you decide if you want to buy it. However, the story is absolutely fabulous. For me, only Please Save my Earth aces this on story.
How about this, I imported almost the entire thing, that's how good it is
Personally, I'm afraid whether Basara will be fully released... (not a large fan base and so many books)

I would say Alice 19th because it's really good and beautiful and all that jazz.
I have read Uzumaki, which is great, and addicting, which is why I'm lucky it was only 3 volumes long (bought one, went back the same day to get the 2nd and the next day to a different store for the 3rd). It's really weird though, bust you could probably collect it at the same time as collecting any other series (since it's short and it seems companies are waiting 2 months between releases instead of one).
THe other titles mentioned I have not read.[/u]
