Group B-1
Tank Police, New Dominion Tank Police vs. Seven Samurai, Samurai 7 Voting for: Seven Samurai Group B-2 Team Hei, Darker Than BLACK vs. Black Knights, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Voting for: Black Knights. Pretty much every other vote can be explained by either looking at the guides or comments involved, to a greater or lesser extent, but I do want to say a couple of specific things about this match. Without going over the same points again...in terms of overall staying power I think the Black Knights were quite consistent as far as organizations go, which allowed them to survive and often succeed in spite of internal divisions and an admittedly pyramidal structure. Still, I don't really expect them to get very far in terms of this tournament as a whole against some of the stronger participants. I would say that Team Hei certainly ended up working much better as a team towards the end of their respective show, which is admirable enough and deserves proper recognition, but rainbowcourage made a crucial point about how long it took them to establish the necessary level of trust and become an actual unit, when they had started out as merely co-workers and individual operatives under the Syndicate. Group B-3 Straw Hat Pirates, One Piece vs. French Guards Company B, The Rose of Versailles Voting for: Straw Hat Pirates Group B-4 British Library Operations Division, Read or Die franchise vs. Velka-Type Knights, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A Voting for: Velka-Type Knights Group B-5 Tokyo Metropolitan Police Special Vehicles Section 2, Patlabor franchise vs. Shinsengumi, Peacemaker Voting for: Tokyo Metropolitan Police Special Vehicles Section 2 Group B-6 Shinesmen, Shinesman Special Duty Combat Unit vs. Outlaw Star crew, Outlaw Star Voting for: Shinesmen Group B-7 STN-J, Witch Hunter Robin vs. Parakiss Label, Paradise Kiss Voting for: Parakiss Label Group B-8 Magic Knights, Magic Knight Rayearth vs. International Police Organization, Giant Robo Voting for: International Police Organization Group B-9 State Section 3 (aka Pumpkin Scissors), Pumpkin Scissors vs. Special Services Division, Heat Guy J Voting for: State Section 3 (aka Pumpkin Scissors) Group B-10 Slayers team, Slayers franchise vs. Homonculi, Fullmetal Alchemist Voting for: Slayers Team Group B-11 Aria Company, ARIA franchise vs. Shibusen, Soul Eater Voting for: Shibusen Group B-12 Hotel Moscow, Black Lagoon vs. Genshiken, Genshiken Voting for: Hotel Moscow Group B-13 Cyborg Soldiers, Cyborg 009 vs. Beck, BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad Voting for Cyborg Soldiers Group B-14 Crescendolls, Interstalla 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem vs. Yamayurikai, Maria Watches Over Us franchise Voting for: Yamayurikai Group B-15 Skull Squadron, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross vs. Kamogawa Gym, Fighting Spirit Voting for:Kamogawa Gym Group B-16 Black Stones, NANA vs. Gekkostate, Eureka 7 Voting for: Black Stones |

Round 1 Group B is now closed.
Results can be found here. This was a much tighter round than last time, with only two complete blowouts and only 5/16 with a spread of more than 10 votes out of a possible 32. Some of the matches which were tight a couple of days ago did spread out a bit in the end (notably the Black Knights), but even so Beck, Crescendolls, and British Library Ops all squeaked in with a minimal margin of victory and a couple of of other matches tightened up; Gekkostate wound up winning by only eight after looking for a while like they would dominate. Anyway, next round should be up shortly. And I'll need more help to finish out the Group D Guide entries - definitely more than I got this past time! Watch the other thread for details on that. EDIT: And on a total side note, I just finally finished watching Daphne in the Brilliant Blue over the weekend (for review purposes, of course!) and must now claim that not including Nereids-Kamchatka Branch from that series in this tournament is a gross oversight. They would have had legit second-round potential at least. Last edited by Key on Tue Sep 22, 2009 12:03 am; edited 1 time in total |

Round 1 Group C is now closed.
Please note that some group names have been updated a bit since the nominations and minigame phases, but it should still be eminently clear who’s who. Also please notice that one team has a total crap Guide entry because a) nobody bothered to write a Guide entry for them despite repeated requests and b) I couldn’t figure out from Wikipedia entries alone what all the group did that was meritorious as a team. A couple of others have decidedly weak Guide entries for the same reason. Please keep these in mind when I ask for help with Group D Guide entries in a day or two, as I have a lot of missing ones right now. Anyway, onto the voting! Group C-1
Grandis Gang, Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water vs. ES Force, Kiddy Grade I am a big fan of Kiddy Grade, but the ES Force seldom acts with unity greater than at the partner level, so they're not a good contender here. While I have yet to get around to seeing Nadia, The Grandis Gang sound like they have enough teamwork going on to merit at least one win. Group C-2 Big Fire, Giant Robo vs. Akatsuki, Naruto Neither of these villainous options terribly impress me as contenders. I'll go with Akatsuki as the lesser of two evils (in terms of this tournament, anyway). Group C-3 Gutsy Geoid Guard, GoGaiGar vs. Lagoon Company , Black Lagoon GGG actually sounds like a pretty cool group, and I might be swayed to vote for them here if someone could post up a better argument than what I could come up with for the Guide entry. Barring that, I have to support what will likely be a Lagoon Company steamroller - even though I don't think they're as strong an option as Hotel Moscow. Group C-4 Team AAA, Bus Gamer vs. Sailor Scouts, Sailor Moon franchise Sorry Team AAA, but the Sailor Scouts have multiple lengthy series to establish their creds, and in this case that matters a lot. Group C-5 Ala Alba, Negima! OVAs vs. Yuki Fan Club, Fruits Basket Another lackluster match-up. The Yuki Fan Club probably rates in the upper echelon of competitors when it comes to group identity, so I'll give them consideration here. Group C-6 Miyagami Academy Maximum Authority-Wielding Best Student Council , Best Student Council vs. Guardian Council, Shugo Chara Interesting match-up; not sure which way to go on this one. Barring compelling arguments, I'll go with the Best Student Council for now because they're more entertaining. Group C-7 ACROSS, Excel Saga vs. TERRA, RahXephon Wow, the acronym match-up! (And we'll likely have another one next round regardless of who wins.) TERRA may be the better organization, but the incessant comedy value of ACROSS means that they serve their role in their respective series better. Group C-8 MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Knights of the Eastern Calculus, Serial Experiment Lain No contest here. The Knights might have had a chance against a weaker opponent, but MITHRIL has far more supporting material and substantial organization creds on multiple levels. They shouldn't even be challenged until at least the third round. Group C-9 Union, Texhnolyze vs. Civilian Military Provider S.M.S, Macross Frontier My crusade to vote out all of the weak Texhnolyze options begins! SMS deserves this one anyway, especially considering that the Union splits in two in the latter stages of the series. Group C-10 Squad 7, Valkyria Chronicles vs. Nirvana Crew, Vandread Like the Nirvana crew - like 'em a lot, in fact - but I have to give a slight edge to Squad 7 here, and think that most who have seen both series will agree. (If I'm wrong, call me out on this!) They've got chemistry and bonding which matches or exceeds that of the Nirvana crew and are arguably more efficient in achieving their goals. Like Nirvana, they have their failings, but overcome them to become a stronger group. They are, at worst, amongst the best of the military squad options in the tournament. Group C-11 Operation Cozy Family, Kyoran Kazoku Nikki vs. Ouran High School Host Club, Ouran High School Host Club Cozy Family sounds pretty neat, but despite not finding them to be a top contender, the Host Club is even neater. Group C-12 Department of City Security/Municipal Force Daitenzin, Excel Saga vs. Silvana Crew, Last Exile Heh. I'd like to give another vote to Excel Saga this round, but the Silvana crew is more deserving. Alex Rowe runs a pretty efficient operation. Group C-13 Feather Seekers, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle vs. Mew Mews, Tokyo Mew Mew Mew Mews, for reasons stated in the others' Guide entry. Group C-14 Organo, Texhnolyze vs. Ohtori Academy Student Council, Revolutionary Girl Utena I'd like to say that this is strike two against Texhnolyze, but their competition is too weak. The Student Council has little but identity going for them, so Organo gets my reluctant vote here. Group C-15 Band of the Hawk, Berserk vs. Digidestined-Adventure group, Digimon Adventure Heard too many good thinks about the Band of the Hawk to deny them here. Group C-16 Racan, Texhnolyze vs. Wolf Brigade, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade Now it's Strike Two against Texhnolyze for real! The Wolf Brigade actually directly appears very little in its movie, but its lingering presence, influence on the events of the movie, and one of the tournament's most potent group identities ("wolves in the shape of men" is practically their motto) are more than enough to win here. |

Group C-1
Grandis Gang, Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water vs. ES Force, Kiddy Grade ES Force. Group C-2 Big Fire, Giant Robo vs. Akatsuki, Naruto Akatsuki. Group C-3 Gutsy Geoid Guard, GoGaiGar vs. Lagoon Company , Black Lagoon Lagoon Company. Group C-4 Team AAA, Bus Gamer vs. Sailor Scouts, Sailor Moon franchise Sailor Scouts. They must win at least a few rounds, and while I doubt there are enough fans or just appeciators of Sailor Moon franchise to lead Sailor Scouts to full victory they do deserve it. Group C-5 Ala Alba, Negima! OVAs vs. Yuki Fan Club, Fruits Basket Yuki Fan Club. All better then Negima! Group C-6 Miyagami Academy Maximum Authority-Wielding Best Student Council , Best Student Council vs. Guardian Council, Shugo Chara Guardian Council! These kids actually work together all the time to protect Heart Eggs or cure X-eggs. They deserve to win 2 rounds before MITHRIL (will mostly likely) crushes them. Group C-7 ACROSS, Excel Saga vs. TERRA, RahXephon My vote for The Superficially Successful Organization MACROSS. Group C-8 MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Knights of the Eastern Calculus, Serial Experiment Lain MITHRIL. No competition really. Group C-9 Union, Texhnolyze vs. Civilian Military Provider S.M.S, Macross Frontier Civilian Military Provider S.M.S. Group C-10 Squad 7, Valkyria Chronicles vs. Nirvana Crew, Vandread Squad 7. Group C-11 Operation Cozy Family, Kyoran Kazoku Nikki vs. Ouran High School Host Club, Ouran High School Host Club Ouran High School Host Club. Group C-12 Department of City Security/Municipal Force Daitenzin, Excel Saga vs. Silvana Crew, Last Exile Department of City Security/Municipal Force Daitenzin. Group C-13 Feather Seekers, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle vs. Mew Mews, Tokyo Mew Mew Mew Mews. Kawaii! Group C-14 Organo, Texhnolyze vs. Ohtori Academy Student Council, Revolutionary Girl Utena Organo. Group C-15 Band of the Hawk, Berserk vs. Digidestined-Adventure group, Digimon Adventure Band of the Hawk. Another no-brainer. Group C-16 Racan, Texhnolyze vs. Wolf Brigade, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade Wolf Brigade. Doesn't matter who wins this as Band of the Hawk will eat the winner for breakfast. |

I'm completely astounded of the results in Group B. There were 2 matchups in particular between a very old but well-known among longtime fans versus a somewhat obscure, not very popular newer title (going by series titles):
Dominion Tank Police vs Samurai Seven and Patlabor vs Peacemaker Kurogane (Shinsengumi) In the first case the new title won but in the second, the old title won. I would have definitely thought the infamous Shinsengumi would win the hearts of voters, they really are an amazing group and where are all the Kenshin fans anyway? Who has even watched Patlabor in the last 10 years? I wrote the description for both of the losers in those two matchups, were my write-ups that bad? Let me try again, I demand a re-vote! I hope the ES Force doesn't suffer the same fate in the first round at least. EDIT: I found 3 instances where I could have easily persuaded voters in favor of the Shinsengumi if I had voted early on and added a compelling argument why they are the much better team, and it would have been more than enough to ensure their victory. I just happened to be really busy with other stuff and had to procrastinate with my voting this week. Oh well, there's a team later on in the tournament that I am going to choose over them, even if the Shinsengumi had moved on to later brackets. But I'm still mad, being the Shinsengumi enthusiast that I am. |

Ouch. Only got 9 wins. That's gonna hurt my mini-game.
Match C-1: Grandis Gang (Nadia: Secret of Blue Water) <--- VOTE CHANGED!! After seeing some arguments, I've realized that the group cohesion, beyond the two-person squads in ES Force, aren't too strong. Despite not really accomplishing much throughout Nadia, the Grandis Gang have better group chemistry thus I will shift my support to them. Match C-2: Akatsuki (Naruto) I nominated them, so might as well let them stick around for this round at least. Match C-3: Lagoon Company (Black Lagoon) Match C-4: Sailor Scouts (Sailor Moon) Match C-5: Ala Alba (Negima) Match C-6: Miyagami Student Council (Best Student Council) There's no way I'm typing up that entire name. Match C-7: TERRA (RahXephon) They've been able to get more done than ACROSS's efforts being bungled up by Excel. Match C-8: MITHRIL (Full Metal Panic) Not much is clear about the organization and structure of the Knights, so I go with MITHRIL. Match C-9: Civilian Military Provider S.M.S (Macross Frontier) Match C-10: Nirvana crew (Vandread) Fun spaceship crew with great teamwork when the situation calls for it. Match C-11: Ouran High School Host Club (Ouran Host Club) Match C-12: Silvana crew (Last Exile) Match C-13: Mew Mews (Tokyo Mew Mew) Match C-14: Student Council (Revolutionary Girl Utena) <--- VOTE CHANGED! After re-watching some episodes of Texhnolyze, I have come to realize that things in Organo aren't as cohesive as they seem with characters having their own agendas that ultimately lead to the downfall of the Organo. Match C-15: Band of the Hawk (Berserk) Even with spoiler[Griffith's betrayal of the group during the Eclipse], the Band of the Hawk still showed strong unity through both their highest points being a military unit for Midland and their lowest points spoiler[when disowned by the Midland King following Griffith's affair with the princess.] Match C-16: Wolf Brigade (Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade) Shinji's motto of "freedom" for the Racan spoiler[comes back to bite him real hard later in the series with betrayal in his ranks]. While their appearance isn't up until much later in the movie, the Wolf Brigade do well as a cohesive battle unit. Last edited by Ggultra2764 on Sat Sep 26, 2009 10:03 am; edited 2 times in total |

I have a question about the mini game. Even though I submitted a bracket, can I change some of my answers here? I'm looking through my bracket and realize I've made some egregious errors and I'd like to correct them.

As per usual when it comes to these earlier rounds, any reasoning not mentioned is going to be a combination of the guide and anything I remember about a team from nominations.
Group C-1 Voting for: ES Force, Kiddy Grade Group C-2 Voting for: Akatsuki, Naruto Group C-3 Voting for: Lagoon Company , Black Lagoon Group C-4 Voting for: Sailor Scouts, Sailor Moon franchise Group C-5 Voting for: Ala Alba, Negima! OVAs The Yuki Fan Club? Really? This was all I could think when I saw the nomination. And yes, I admit to not being too familiar with Fruits Basket as a whole but still...really? Group C-6 Voting for: Miyagami Academy Maximum Authority-Wielding Best Student Council , Best Student Council Group C-7 Voting for: ACROSS, Excel Saga ACROSS is awesome and I would have seconded their nomination if I had seen enough of the series to justify it. I haven't...but I have seen enough to ensure that they will be getting my vote for many rounds to come. Group C-8 Voting for: MITHRIL, Full Metal Panic! franchise I'm familiar enough with both of these to have an actual opinion. While the Knights are interesting and probably would have had my vote in another match-up, MITHRIL is just plan more important to their series and so you see a lot more of how they work. Group C-9 Voting for: Civilian Military Provider S.M.S, Macross Frontier Group C-10 Voting for: Squad 7, Valkyria Chronicles Group C-11 Voting for: Ouran High School Host Club, Ouran High School Host Club There's a reason these guys led in nominations, even if they probably aren't going to be the winners. But they just work so well as a group and have such interesting dynamics, something which is really shown well right at the end (which is one of the reasons I like the anime more than the manga). Group C-12 Voting for: Silvana Crew, Last Exile Group C-13 Voting for: Mew Mews, Tokyo Mew Mew Everything I hear about the Tsubasa anime has been terribly. And so, since we can't take the manga into consideration, I am voting against the character-developed-stripped group. Group C-14 Voting for: Organo, Texhnolyze Group C-15 Voting for: Digidestined-Adventure group, Digimon Adventure First of all, I have to ask about the
Plus weren't we including the Adventures 02 kids in this group as well, since the season one kids are still around and TK and Kari are in fact main characters? Anyway, regardless of a questionable guide entry, this is one of the strongest teams I know of. Sure, they are kids in a show aimed at kids but they go through a lot and are tested at every turn and come out of it all stronger than when they began. Yes, there is dissent along the way (thanks Matt) but that's going to happen in every group and the fact that they get through it and again become stronger, better friends because of it, is the real reason they deserve to go far. Group C-16 Voting for: Wolf Brigade, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade |

It might have helped if someone who is even remotely familiar with the series had written the Guide entry instead of me having to cobble it together at the last minute because no one volunteered to do it. This is one of the Guide entries I was complaining about at the beginning of my post. |

Unfortunately, this isn't allowed. Don't feel too bad, I don't like my chances for the top 3 either. More so than any tourney so far, this one has had the most toughest round 1 picks by far. While seeded, the group still see a little uneven. I see three to four strong teams in this group compared to at least 6 in group B. Key is not to blame in the slightest. The problem is that for this tournament nominations didn't sync with actual team strength. Unlike Key, I do see the top vote getter going far, but I agree with him they do not deserve to win it all or even make it to the finals. Despite being silly, each member complements the group nicely, they provide top value laughs, they even provide some serious moments that produce drama that works to my great disbelief, and they top it off with incomparable chemistry. The Host Club just might be able to edge out their top 2 foes in this group -- the betrayal ridden Band of Hawk and the oh so popular MITHRIL. Lydia is 100% correct -- this is what happens when I read too quickly. I like voting against my bracket, especially when the match isn't close and I would encourage you to do the same. It would be a shame if you had to vote with your bracket after learning that you made a pretty clear mistake. And don't worry too much about your bracket -- you can mess up quite a bit and still do well as long as your late picks play out. |
