In real life the best teams and organizations are those which have a strong sense of group identity and great internal chemistry, traits which allow them to work effectively towards a common goal, whether it involves winning a match, striking down dastardly villains, protecting the innocent, promoting evil ends, or something as mundane as creating music or producing a play. In the anime sense such groups must also be entertaining and support the mood and tone of the source title (i.e. a team in a comedy should be funny, action teams should offer butt-kicking thrills, and so forth) and/or set an example for teams from later titles to follow. These are the main criteria on which the Best Team/Organization tournament match-ups should be judged.
NOTE: Since this tournament is being run on an English-language site based in North America, official English spellings, title translations, and naming conventions will be observed in any case where it matters and where such information is available. (In other cases, the most commonly-accepted standards from fansubs will be used.) Giving names in English form when making votes is preferred. NOTE: This tournament has now concluded. See this post for final results. Tournament Rules/Standards: 1. This is a single elimination tournament using a standard advancement bracket. 2. Advancement is determined by receiving a plurality of votes in a given match-up. In the event of a tie, all tying participants advance. 3. The field is divided into four lettered Groups A-D, each representing one of the four major branches of the bracket. 4. Each voting phase will last exactly one week, beginning when posted (usually within the first hour of Tuesday morning) and ending at 11:59 p.m. Monday EST (GMT-5). No votes posted after the cut-off time will be accepted, even if an official end to the round hasn’t been announced. 5. Anyone who is a registered forum member in good standing (i.e. you aren’t currently banned) is allowed to vote, regardless of whether or not you’ve participated in any previous round, group, or tournament. However, you must vote for all match-ups in a particular week or none of your votes will be counted. 6. Although providing reasons for your votes is not required for the first two rounds, it is encouraged, as not everyone is going to know every team/organization and convincing arguments have proven to be a major factor in past tournaments. 7. Key is the final arbiter of the main tournament unless otherwise stated. Dorcas_Aurelia is the final arbiter of the minigame. 8. When posting votes, the name of the group you are voting for must be given in bold or your vote may not be counted. References Since voters are not expected to know every group going in, Guide entries which briefly describe each team/organization and its members are being provided. These can be linked to by clicking on the name for each participant. In later rounds (beginning round 3, probably) video clips for surviving participants will also be linked to off of those Guide entries. Video Clips! We will be doing them again this time, and since a few of the third-round participants have already been set, we are looking for clip recommendations. Check the links below for Round 2 results to see who all advanced and check out this post for guidelines on recommending clips. Round 1 Group A is now closed.
Time to get this ball rolling! Those who have done these tournaments before may notice a slight format change: the Encyclopedia entry for a title is no longer linked off of the source name in the match-ups. Since these links already exist on the Guide pages, it seemed redundant (and a big waste of time!) to include them here. At this point in the tournament there are going to be a lot of teams that people aren't familiar with, so be sure to read the linked Guide entries and the arguments of others in any case where you aren't familiar with one or both contests. I'd really like to see a minimum of "I'm picking the one I'm familiar with" justifications. Some may also note that there have been some adjustments to the exact names of certain teams since the nominations phase. These were done to make the team/organization names more consistent with official (or at least commonly-accepted) English translations. I have also made the rare exception of listing When They Cry's name in both English and original Japanese since the first season is licensed but the second season hasn't and there isn't a certain official English translation for the second season's title. I thought this wasn't going to start until the 8th... but I forgot about the fact that it's already the 8th in other parts of the US. Oh well, I'm guessing my mini-game entry for this one would have sucked anyways.
A lot of groups I don't recognize, so I'll wait a bit to vote and see what some others say about some of them. |

Group A-1
Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Angel Brigade, Galaxy Angel franchise Section 9. I've seen GitS movies and they do work pretty well as organization. Group A-2 Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico vs. HOLD/HOLY, sCRYed Nadesico Crew. I like the movie Group A-3 Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise vs. SOS Brigade, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Ugh... god why, why are these two even here. SOS Brigade, they consist of interesting characters and do, sometimes, work as a team to please Haruhi or battle anomalies. Group A-4 Six God-Generals, Tales of the Abyss vs. Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho Team Urameshi. They seem like a major player in this tournament. How far will they get? Group A-5 Shibuya Psychic Research, Ghost Hunt vs. Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV Paper Sisters. As much as I feel that R.O.D. TV is a disappointment I can't deny sisters' strong bonds and combat efficiency as a team. Group A-6 Amaterasu crew, Starship Operators vs. Digidestined-Frontier group, Digimon Frontier Amaterasu crew. Ship full of cadets? What could be better? I am getting interested in the series now... Group A-7 Magic User's Club, Magic User's Club vs. I-Jin, Read or Die OVA I didn't notice, or rather, I noticed next to no teamwork from I-Jin. They just battle one on one with little to none cooperation. Magic User's Club on the other hand actually does club activities together, as well as battling aliens in OVA. Group A-8 Kira Investigation Task Force, Death Note vs. Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise This is an interesting one. None of these groups like to work together so its down to choosing "lesser evil" (hehehe). Kira's task force work together sometimes, but they are mostly 'led' like sheep so that doesn't count. Hellsing Organization works much better, and is an actual organization. Group A-9 Colonel Mustang’s squadron, Fullmetal Alchemist vs. Muroe Kendo Club, Bamboo Blade I've seen some of both series. Hmm.. I'll go with Muroe Kendo Club. Prove me wrong FMA fans, I dare you. Group A-10 NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion vs. Blade Children, Spiral NERV. Great organization, not much to add for first round. Group A-11 Seishu Prefab Team, Cross Game vs. Court Guard Squad 11, Bleach Court Guard Squad 11. They look bad-ass, which I can't say about other competitor... Group A-12 Team Earth, Oban Star Racers vs. Le Secret du Roi, Le Chevalier d’Eon Le Secret du Roi. Better than Team earth. Group A-13 Trapnest, NANA vs. Tokko, Tokko Trapnest!!!11. This band is awesome! Not because of their music but because of the chemistry thats going on and characters themselves. They are all different, all seek their peace of mind and at the same time they feel real and alive. Group A-14 The Academy Steel Angel Kurumi vs. Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis franchise Knight Sabers. Kinda like Sailor Senshi, only in robotic suits. They do make a good team. Group A-15 Odd Jobs Jin, Gintama (NOTE: originally “Yorozuya Gin-san Crew”) vs. Game Club, When They Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koroni franchise Game Club. They only start acting like a team in second season, but their team succeedes against fate itself. Group A-16 Chronos, Black Cat vs. Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor And last, but far from least, is Soyokaze Crew. After realizing true value of their captain, the crew does truly heroic deeds to rescue him from "imprisonment" and then a death sentence. And the chemistry between all the crew members.. thats just hilarious and plain awesome. |

Match A-1: Section 9 (Ghost in the Shell franchise)
I see the Major and her group being one of the big teams for this bracket. Match A-2: Nadesico crew (Martian Successor Nadesico) I never got much sense of team chemistry from HOLD through my exposure to sCRYed as many within the organization acted individually. So I guess I'm voting for the crew of the Nadesico. Match A-3: Team Rocket (Pokemon franchise) They might be hard to take seriously, but I seen more organization and chemistry within Team Rocket than I did with the SOS Brigade. All the Brigade members are just being tugged along to Haruhi's beat. Match A-4: Team Urameshi (Yu Yu Hakusho) Match A-5: Paper Sisters (Read or Die TV) I really love the antics and chemistry of the Paper Sisters both in battle and living normal lives. This is another strong group I see holding up throughout this tourney. Match A-6: Amaterasu crew (Starship Operators) Match A-7: Magic User's Club (Magic User's Club) After reading up on the club, they seem to show more group chemistry than the I-Jin do. Match A-8: Hellsing Organization (Hellsing franchise) How ironic. A battle between two organizations that don't have the best group chemistry. Seeing as there were enough arguments within the Kira Task Force and spoiler[they are later being pulled around on a wild goose chase by Light], I'll be going with Hellsing for this round. Match A-9: Colonel Mustang's Squadron (Full Metal Alchemist franchise) As ignorant as it is for me to say this, I'm going with what I know for this match. Match A-10: NERV (Neon Genesis Evangelion) For the most part when I seen Spiral, the Blade Children were acting individually when they dealt with Narumi and others that they targeted. Match A-11: Seishu Prefab Team (Cross Game) Cross Game's been one of my personal favorite titles for the 2009 anime roster and the Prefab Team definitely showed great teamwork and improvements when dealing with Coach Daimon. Match A-12: Team Earth (Oban Star-Racers) Match A-13: Tokko (Tokko) Trapnest's chemistry didn't seem as strong as the Black Stones when I seen Nana and after reading up on Tokko, they seem to have better group chemistry. Match A-14: Knight Sabers (Bubblegum Crisis franchise) Match A-15: Game Club (Higurashi franchise) The fact this group endured enough cycles of tragedy together and kept getting stronger with their bonds as a result make them a strong group in my eyes. Match A-16: Chronos (Black Cat) |

Voting for: Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise Group A-2 Voting for: Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico Group A-3 Voting for: Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise Group A-4 Voting for: Six God-Generals, Tales of the Abyss Group A-5 Voting for: Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV Group A-6 Voting for: Digidestined-Frontier group, Digimon Frontier Group A-7 Voting for: Magic User's Club, Magic User's Club Group A-8 Voting for: Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise This is the only one where I have any reason beyond the guide and impressions during nominations. Admittedly I've only seen the first half of Death Note but the investigation task force always seemed to ineffective to really work for me as a team. They have their moments but the little I've seen of Hellsing makes it clear that a few moments are not enough. Group A-9 Voting for: Colonel Mustang’s squadron, Fullmetal Alchemist Group A-10 Voting for: NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion Group A-11 Voting for: Court Guard Squad 11, Bleach Group A-12 Voting for: Le Secret du Roi, Le Chevalier d’Eon Group A-13 Voting for: Trapnest, NANA Group A-14 Voting for: The Academy Steel Angel Kurumi Group A-15 Voting for: Odd Jobs Jin, Gintama Group A-16 Voting for: Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor |

Been so busy, I didn't manage to get a minigame entry in on time. Oh well, c'est la vie. At least I can vote:
Group A-1 Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Angel Brigade, Galaxy Angel franchise No doubt here: voting Section 9 Group A-2 Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico vs. HOLD/HOLY, sCRYed Voting Nadesico Crew. Group A-3 Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise vs. SOS Brigade, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Voting Team Rocket. Group A-4 Six God-Generals, Tales of the Abyss vs. Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho Coin-flip: Team Urameshi. I don't care, either way. Group A-5 Shibuya Psychic Research, Ghost Hunt vs. Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV Voting Paper Sisters. Group A-6 Amaterasu crew, Starship Operators vs. Digidestined-Frontier group, Digimon Frontier Voting Amaterasu Crew. Group A-7 Magic User's Club, Magic User's Club vs. I-Jin, Read or Die OVA Voting Magic Users' Club. Group A-8 Kira Investigation Task Force, Death Note vs. Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise Voting Hellsing Organization. Anything is better than the alternative. Group A-9 Colonel Mustang’s squadron, Fullmetal Alchemist vs. Muroe Kendo Club, Bamboo Blade Voting Colonel Mustang's Squadron. Shouldn't that be "squad"? Isn't "squadron" a phrase for air forces, warships and cavalry, not infantry soldiers? Group A-10 NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion vs. Blade Children, Spiral Voting Blade Children, with absolute indifference. Group A-11 Seishu Prefab Team, Cross Game vs. Court Guard Squad 11, Bleach Voting Court Guard Squad 11. Group A-12 Team Earth, Oban Star Racers vs. Le Secret du Roi, Le Chevalier d’Eon Voting Team Earth. Group A-13 Trapnest, NANA vs. Tokko, Tokko Voting... urr... who cares? Trapnest. Group A-14 The Academy Steel Angel Kurumi vs. Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis franchise Voting The Academy. Group A-15 Odd Jobs Jin, Gintama (NOTE: originally “Yorozuya Gin-san Crew”) vs. Game Club, When They Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koroni franchise Voting Game Club, because they are seriously hot stuff. Group A-16 Chronos, Black Cat vs. Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor Voting Soyokaze Crew. - abunai |

Group A-3 Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise vs. SOS Brigade, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I think the SOS brigade loses out here on team identity at the very least; voting Team Rocket. Group A-4 Six God-Generals, Tales of the Abyss vs. Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho voting Team Urameshi Group A-5 Shibuya Psychic Research, Ghost Hunt vs. Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV voting Paper Sisters. Group A-6 Amaterasu crew, Starship Operators vs. Digidestined-Frontier group, Digimon Frontier voting Amaterasu Crew. Group A-1
Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Angel Brigade, Galaxy Angel franchise Section 9 Group A-2 Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico vs. HOLD/HOLY, sCRYed HOLD/HOLY Group A-3 Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise vs. SOS Brigade, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya SOS Brigade (an unfortunate pairing in the first round, I must say; I find that Haruhi's dan did a better job of finding espers, aliens and time travelers than Team Rocket ever did stealing pokemon) Group A-4 Six God-Generals, Tales of the Abyss vs. Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho Team Urameshi Group A-5 Shibuya Psychic Research, Ghost Hunt vs. Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV Paper Sisters I just feel that the Shibuya Psychic Research team aren't really very cohesive at all. When they come up against a given problem it seems that each individual could solve it on their own in their own way, and they just happen to be grouped together out of convenience. Group A-6 Amaterasu crew, Starship Operators vs. Digidestined-Frontier group, Digimon Frontier Amaterasu crew Group A-7 Magic User's Club, Magic User's Club vs. I-Jin, Read or Die OVA I-Jin Group A-8 Kira Investigation Task Force, Death Note vs. Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise Kira Investigation Task Force Group A-9 Colonel Mustang’s squadron, Fullmetal Alchemist vs. Muroe Kendo Club, Bamboo Blade Colonel Mustang's squadron Group A-10 NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion vs. Blade Children, Spiral NERV Group A-11 Seishu Prefab Team, Cross Game vs. Court Guard Squad 11, Bleach Court Guard Squad 11 (Come on, they just kick so much ass. Plus they're all great friends and cooperate really well with each other) Group A-12 Team Earth, Oban Star Racers vs. Le Secret du Roi, Le Chevalier d’Eon Le Secret du Roi Group A-13 Trapnest, NANA vs. Tokko, Tokko Tokko Group A-14 The Academy Steel Angel Kurumi vs. Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis franchise Knight Sabers Group A-15 Odd Jobs Jin, Gintama (NOTE: originally “Yorozuya Gin-san Crew”) vs. Game Club, When They Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koroni franchise Game Club Group A-16 Chronos, Black Cat vs. Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor Chronos Most of these were chosen from the group descriptions because I knew only one of the two teams in question or neither, unfortunately. |

I don't know a lot of teams this round, so it's mostly going to be "guide" for reasons.
A-1: Section 9 A-2 Nadesico Crew A-3 Team Rocket One where I do know both teams. On one hand, we have a team that really just hangs out and does nothing and on the other we have a team that is routinely beaten by children who are smart enough to not use Magikarps or give them to their grunts. But I'm going to go with Team Rocket because at least they are always perceived as the threat they think they should be and they have a strong sense of group identity. A-4 Team Urameshi Also know both of these (although the Six God-Generals more from the game than the show), but the 6 God-Generals don't always work best together (although when they do, man are those tough boss fights! Although this could have been in part due to the PS2's limit of 4 enemies on the opposing team, which would have made it impossible for all 6 to attack you at once anyway), but Urameshi, once everyone gets used to each other, work as a very good team here. Sure, they get individual show-off moments, but who doesn't? A-5 Shibuya Psychic Research A-6 Amaterasu Crew While this Digi-group works great together, they seem to run into issues when the writers decide to completely ignore three of the main characters in order to make two of the others more awesome and essentially just makes anyone not named Koji or Takuya stand on the side. Now, this is me blaming the writing for being bad, because when they do work together, they're very efficient. A-7 Magic User's Club A-8 Hellsing ORg. Didn't have time to vote last night, so let's try this now:
Group A-1 Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Angel Brigade, Galaxy Angel franchise As amusing as the Angel Brigade is, Section 9 is one of the tournament's top competitors. Group A-2 Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico vs. HOLD/HOLY, sCRYed This is a difficult one because neither is that exceptional. The Nadesico crew is generally more cohesive and entertaining. Group A-3 Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise vs. SOS Brigade, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya The SOS Brigade definitely has a group identity, or at least everyone outside of the group thinks they do. I'm just not buying Team Rocket over them. Group A-4 Six God-Generals, Tales of the Abyss vs. Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho Meh. Team Urameshi sounds like they have it going on. Group A-5 Shibuya Psychic Research, Ghost Hunt vs. Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV SPR is a worthy group that I'd have picked over anyone in A-2 or A-4, but too many good things have been said about the Paper Sisters to deny them at this point. Group A-6 Amaterasu crew, Starship Operators vs. Digidestined-Frontier group, Digimon Frontier The Amarerasu crew has to have their act together or they don't survive. Period. There may be one star, but when it comes to the battle scenes there are no individuals. Group A-7 Magic User's Club, Magic User's Club vs. I-Jin, Read or Die OVA The I-Jin are shaky for even being here; honestly, I'm surprised they got seconded. Thus I support the Magic-User's Club instead. Group A-8 Kira Investigation Task Force, Death Note vs. Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise Honestly, I don't think people are giving the Kira Task Force enough credit for the teamwork they show in several scenes. They aren't top competitors, however, and Hellsing is just too cool to deny. Group A-9 Colonel Mustang’s squadron, Fullmetal Alchemist vs. Muroe Kendo Club, Bamboo Blade I will also give the Muroe Kendo Club the benefit of the doubt here, barring a convincing argument for their opponent. Group A-10 NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion vs. Blade Children, Spiral NERV is one of the all-time-great anime organizations. They deserve to advance at least a couple of rounds. Group A-11 Seishu Prefab Team, Cross Game vs. Court Guard Squad 11, Bleach If you've been watching Cross Game then this one is no contest. Seishu Prefab Team ultimately wins because they come together as a team while their opponents play as individuals. Squad 11 members, although they have a distinctive identity, are off doing their own things much too often. Group A-12 Team Earth, Oban Star Racers vs. Le Secret du Roi, Le Chevalier d’Eon Le Secret Du Roi isn't a top competitor, but they're good enough to last a round or two. Group A-13 Trapnest, NANA vs. Tokko, Tokko Tokko is decent but not great, so I'll give Trapnest the benefit of the doubt for now. Group A-14 The Academy Steel Angel Kurumi vs. Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis franchise The Academy is worthy to be here, but the Knight Sabers absolutely and unquestionably deserve to win this one. I think they're the strongest competitor in the bottom half of the bracket. Group A-15 Odd Jobs Jin, Gintama (NOTE: originally “Yorozuya Gin-san Crew”) vs. Game Club, When They Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koroni franchise I have not seen the second season of Higurashi, but based on what I've heard about it Game Club seems fairly strong. Group A-16 Chronos, Black Cat vs. Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor Another "meh" for me. Soyokaze crew, I guess. |
