I didn't know lawn art could be crafted with such precision that it would be considered copyright infringement. I also thought such things were free advertising for the actual product in question.

Some artist painted Disney scenes in a kid's bedroom - Disney came in with a HUGE lawsuit (millions) and everything was painted over. Happens all the time. Especially if the rights holders hear about it.

Yeah, but this is Japan, the place where copyrights are violated on a daily bases in one form, or another, and the copyrights holders don't seem to bat an eyelash about it. Could this be a change in attitude, or just someone at the council having a hand wringing moment?

Either way they still owe Studio Ghibli for past copyright fees until the time it is taken down unless they made a deal already.

But we're talking about a government agency who should have known better.

Ladies and gentlemen, disarming your own argument before you're half way into it.

This case?

I agree, the Totoro lawn thing is dumb. I'm sure my artist friend would be overjoyed if someone made lawn art over her characters.

I think this issue is simply that of council bureaucracy trying to shut down a project that was costing them money. It does not sound like Ghibli cared at all, doesn't even indicate Ghibli has ever said anything about it.

They bored person behind his desk saw an unauthorized project that has been done by council employees, researched it a bit saw a copyright issue and used it to shut it down. Unfortunately happens all the time.

When things like this happen, I think back to my high school years when the pep club favored painting Pink Panther on posters instead of the school's own original mascot animation, go figure! Cool
