I doubt Robotech is still happening, especially if TF 2 gets significantly lower returns than the last one. It's not a franchise you can cram into one 2-hour movie; and even the Shadow Chronicles couldn't do it in 90 minutes. The fact that they can't even get a script yet proves it. Just dump it like Akira, WB; this ain't gonna be your Star Trek reboot.

They're obviously not going to cram the entire Robotech story into one movie... Looks like they're trying to make a franchise out of this and make multiple movies.
Transformers may suck ass because of the talent involved there. But I doubt Robotech hinges on anything to do with its success. For one the story revolves around human characters unlike Transformers that does it ass backwards.
Lastly, even if Robotech relies on Transformers to make robots popular, Transformers 2 will make a good amount of money so that's guaranteed profitability if anything.
And lastly, another movie involving mecha called Avatar by James Cameron will be out and that's looking very likely to be a huge success and establish 3D filmmaking as the next standard for theatres. Robotech will benefit greatly when it finally does show up. And I for one am looking forward to it!

I may sound cynical, this sound like another exploitation of 80's popular children TV shows.

There is no Robotech. I wonder if the people behind this even realize that.

It's fairly certain they do. But they can't call it Macross because there are legal issues involved. Besides, many people, myself included, grew up watching a show called Robotech and speaking for myself I don't mind if it remains Robotech.

Just bury it. It's not a good idea.
I'm one of the few that's a fan of both Robotech AND Macross / Mospeada. I like and respect them both as separate entities, with their own relevant rules and canon.
But frankly, we all know that this is going to turn out to be a mess. It's already sounding like it's in DevHell. Producers, how about this... use 1/3 of the money and make a really GREAT video game that expands the story. Get some "names" involved and let them do voices, not have them jerk the story everywhere to address their "issue of the week."

The best bet would probably be to do the "Macross" portion as a trilogy, and if those do really, really well, do the "Southerncross" and "Mospeda" segments as 1 or 2 movies each. That's assuming any of them are particularly good in the first place, though.

jdnation: Avatar's gonna bomb because it's got no stars and it's "experimental".
DrWii: The studio is not going to base the movie directly on Macross, due to the legal issues. It's most likely going to come up with a new story which might make brief allusions to Macross.

actually this all sounds like fairly common Hollywood to me, its not unusual to have lots of re-writes and different writers. Now if they can find a good director for this, it actually might be good.
also, good, a-list video games, almost take as much money to make as movies do, with just as much BS to deal with too.

I have no faith in Hollywood adaptations, so yes, I do hope this money gets the can. Hell, I can barely hold and hope that they ever have transforming jets at this point, not to mention giant humanoid aliens and spaceships.
Megan Fox will be Lynn Minmay, you're average american girl/American Idol contestant, and Shia Lebouf will be Rick Hunter, a sassy teen who uh..is annoying and never pilots a Valkyrie.

I believe Robotech is one of the few anime type properties that can work well. First off the cast is international and the story isn't very 'Japanese.' It has mass appeal! And there is a built in audience in America as well as some places abroad. I watched it with my friends after school everyday in India!
I agree with DRWii, depending on the scope they're going for, if they really do want to tell the whole Robotech story. The Macross saga itself will need at least a trilogy of it's own. Southern Cross could be done with a single film I think... Mospeeda though might require at least 2 films. And they should just ignore Shadow Chronicles.
Though given all the legal issues with Macross I think everyone should be prepared if they drastically change things because they've got no choice.
Also I can guarantee there won't be as much focus on the music being used as a sort of 'weapon' There can be thematic elements tied into the music as a cultural thing and a way to reach out to the enemy as well as building morale, but I've always found the idea that it can drastically effect the enemy's abilities to be pretty stupid in my opinion. The only time it was ever really done sensibly and well was in Macross Plus which is my all time favourite!

Yeah, I hear you. A lot gets lost between those drafts and frankly it's a minefield to begin with.
I think a game is more befitting and can be done on less than a 10-20 million dollar budget, while a live action Robotech film would need WAY more than that to be completed with any degree of cohesion or quality.
