Well I'd think you might want to take a look at the horror section as normally gothic and horror mix often (and I think that's what your asking)

But if it's Vampire stories I'll say that at least the anime portrayals of them are different and defineitely missing some classic gothic elements.

http://www.virtualsalt.com/gothic.htm

at least in part for me at least. I don't know perhaps it's that I can't get behind vampires I'm suppossed tp feel sorry for, or are heoric as that goes against the idea of being a vampire. As they are not models to aspire to, rather ones that should be punished as that is one of the theories of gothic characters, a character who has avoided just punishment. So for vampire stories the Vampire Hunter D movies, as as Black Blood Brothers, Moonphase and many others may have superatural elements to them but I don't feel scared or reflecting upon myself in them.

The novel Twilight came out in 2005. Series and movies featuring vampires have been a staple of anime since at least the mid-'80s, and some of those are known to have been inspired by much earlier live-action vampire movies. (The novel on which Vampire Hunter D is based was specifically inspired by a 1958 movie Horror of Dracula, for instance.)

Thinking that there's any connection the other way - i.e. manga/anime inspiring Twilight - is just as pretentious, as vampires are plenty popular enough here in the States alone.

(Oh, and tsumetai okan: do work on your grammar. It's expected around here.)

Well I am a fan of Vampires in general (except Twilight), though though the only vampire aime I have read have been a bit of Moonphase, Rosario+Vampire and the awesome Hellsing which I think Twilight totaly stole from Laughing .Well I could go on about the continuel romanceisation of vampires, that began a long time back with certain novels, then after a while it moved to movies, and i there might be a mini boom at the moment again where it has also spread to anime. Though personaly I found Vampire hunter D a bit boreing.

Oops I forgot I also saw Karin, that was pretty good.

Hang on though. Vampires in general are a very common topic. However, there's also this more specific and more recent topic of 'nice vampires'. Stuff like Twilight, or several recent anime series that present vampires not as evil villains but in a romantic way. This is a more recent trend I think. I'm not sure of whether this appeared first in anime or in Twilight but it seems at least possible that one influenced the other.

Then both may have received its influence from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, which has been out long before Twilight. Angel was a "good" vampire, so long as the curse wasn't lifted. So good, the dude got his own series.

But in truth, the "friendly" vampire has been around for quite a while, as I recall an old B&W movie of a bungling "wanna be" vampire who refused to bite people.

Vampire mythology will always make for great fare, regardless of politeness. 30 Days of Night reworked the vampire mythology in a fantastic way, just as Karin did in anime.

"Daywalkers" are also a common theme, as in Blade and Moonphase.

In truth, there's really not much one can do with this mythology while trying to retain the public's "knowledge" of vampires in general, but I sure love the way people try.

You can trace "nice" vampires back at least as far as Ann Rice's novel Interview with the Vampire, from the 1970s.

Does anyone know of a list of vampire animes? My perception is that, apart from a few prominent titles, there actually isn't that much vampire anime around. And anime vampires tend to be either kawaii or overly kewl, IMO.
