The first five volumes of the Akira manga are pretty easily findable at just about any retailer that sells manga despite apparently being out of print. Volume 6 however is another story.

My local store never has it, and online searches bring up volumes 1-5 at prices at or near the $30 MSRP, but volume 6 all of a sudden shoots up to $130+. You can't find the Akira manga at all on eBay.

Anybody know what singled this volume out as the rarest?

I guess they never printed that many. Since many people lose interest mid-series, later volumes get smaller print runs. Saikano has the same problem, the final volume is ridiculously hard to find.

Also a possibility: part of the run was stored away and lost. The boxes might turn up someday if they clean out the warehouses. This happens to Tokyopop manga a lot. Rare and OOP volumes pop up at the Belgian/Dutch bookfestival in large quantities. Three years you could get Sailor Moon there for €1,95 per volume. Or Planetes 2, most stores can't get that in stock anymore. Boekenfestijn? Huge stack.

Just import the UK edition - the publisher's different (Titan rather than Dark Horse) but it's identical in all other respects (covers, translation etc.) and all of its volumes are still in print.

You can buy vol. 6 from Book Depository for £15.99 (that's about $24) and you'll even get free shipping to the US.

I second Moomintroll's suggestion. I just purchased a couple of volumes of Akira from the Book Depository last week. Not only did they cost less than $30 apiece, but shipping was free to the US, and reached me in Seattle, WA, in less than a week from when I placed the order. Also, the books I received were actually the US Dark Horse editions (even though the Book Depository website had them listed as the Titan reprints).

Plus, last I checked (last week), they had all 6 volumes in stock (although vols 1, 2, and the "Akira Club" artbook/making-of-book are still readily available & cheap at Amazon, Half.com, or direct from Dark Horse's own retail site, TFAW.

Yeah, I picked up the first 4 Dark Horse volumes at the Anime Expo a few years back at some insanely cheap price (like $6 each or something). Then I also discovered that volume six was almost impossible to find. I finally managed to pick one up for a semi-reasonable price online through some no-name anime shop on the east coast.

Try checking Ebay from time to time. Maybe you'll get lucky. Otherwise, it's probably only a matter of time before they're reprinted. But it may be a while before the final volume gets re-released.

They're being reprinted by Kodansha USA (Kodansha Comics) now, though. I just saw multiple copies of the first volume (it's sort of an omnibus) at my local book store.

No it isn't. The Kodansha Comics release will be six volumes, same as the original Japanese release and the earlier North American releases.

I spotted the Kodansha release of the first volume in my local LCS. I had a look at it, and suprisingly there's not too much in the difference. The paper isn't as good as the Dark Horse editions (it seems a lot more flimsy, although it could be just the glossy covers).
They have a nice bit on Otomo at the back that's more detailed and up-to-date than the DH editions, along with a self-portrait taken from Akira Club. They also have a two-page sneak peak of volume two, and strangely enough they used the Marvel colour edition pages instead of the B&W pages there.
Price is reasonably the same as what I paid for the DH editions, although I can't be too sure as I bought the DH volumes some years back.

Thanks, that's a good website. Also worth noting that it's got a currency selecter on the top-right section of the page.
