Since I couldn't find a a discussion thread about Battle Angel Alita and BAA: Last Order, I figured I would start one myself.
So, what did you guys think about Last Order vol. 10? spoiler[ Sechs' part was a little boring as usual, but at least Zekka was a fun new addition to the cast. Thankfully Alita more than made up for it. Weasel's death was a bit of a surprise, though I'm sure he'll be back (he made a last minute copy of mind or something like that), but I totally didn't see those plot twists in the end coming. The truth about the F box was huge surprise and it'll probably mean that there'll be two versions of Alita once she recovers her brain, which nicely solves her problem about about Figure and wanting to go to Mars. Also, it was nice to see that Kishiro hadn't forgotten about Nova's resurrection system, I had been wondering about that (BTW, doesn't Alita's team still have Porta Nova's second brainchip?). On the down side, it looks like Alita will be out of the action for while (again), so the next volume will probably be all about Sechs. Oh well, at least the fight scene's will be gorgeous as ever.] Yukitopia has posted cover for vol. 12 in the Japanese gallery. Check out Alita's new look: (God, I hope that tail's for the cover only) Last edited by Generic #757858 on Wed Jan 07, 2009 5:56 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I've been waiting over a year for the vol.10 french release. I've managed to find a few translated chapters online but they don't make much sense read out of order. At least Vilma's story is over now, we can finally move foward.

Yeah, that kinda dragged on. Sure, it was important to the plot and filled in a lot of background story, but it could have easily been squeezed into one volume without the fight between Vilma and Victor. |

spoiler[I have the Japanese book 12, and I have very bad news for you. It's still debatable whether it's part of her body or her coat though.] As for book 10, I'd say it's an excellent and diverse volume. This has been my favorite series for the last few years so I expected nothing less. The twist at the end brought back memories from the original Gunnm series. Truly a magic moment. Right after that there's also another memorable scene: spoiler[ We witness Alita's destruction atop Ketheres - scrolls back down to Nova in Tiphares for a second - before we end up down in the Scrapyard for a discussion about one of Tiphares' missing tubes (a mystery that will be solved in vol. 11). I thought it was a nice way to show the hiearchy-based life that dominate the various stages of the megastructure. ] |

spoiler[Ugh. Either way, it's still stupid. I know she was named after Ido's cat and there was that robocat joke, but come on! And don't tell me she has the ears too.] |

Does anyone have any idea if Gunnm Gaiden has been licensed by Viz? I remember reading some rumors last year, but couldn't find any solid info

I haven't heard any news, but if they did I wonder if they'd do a limited edition release with the action figure, like the one that was released in Japan. I got the Japanese LE Gunnm Gaiden/figure recently and I'm really digging it, especially since there were never really any great Alita/Gally figures to begin with. Obligatory show-off. |

Nice! I don't usually care about figures, but I'd definetily get that. Too bad about the eyes though. |

Some sites list the release date for Last Order vol. 11 as April 2009, but is it accurate? I can't find any info on Viz's site. Seems too early to be true.

This whole business with spoiler[multiple Novas] has left me a bit confused, so tell me if I've got this down right:
spoiler[ -Porta Nova is/was (status of the second brain chip unknown) the first Nova, who was killed by Roscoe in the beginning of the series. -Super Nova is the second Nova, who went to Ketheres with Alita and was captured, killed and resurrected by Trinidad. -Nova X is the tenth Nova (Novas 3-9 killed by Tiphareans before resurrection). -Each version of Nova has the memories of his predecessors up until the point of their deaths.] |

I just finished up (finally) reading the first series. I really enjoyed it and I plan on reading Last Order as soon as I've got the funds for it. What direction does the story take? Is it as good as the original series?

I guess I’m in the minority here, but so far I find Last Order more enjoyable than the original. It’s more of a continuation of the original than a sequel, starting where BAA left off. Most of the story now takes place in space (usually in Earth’s orbit – there are no intergalactic travels here), giving it a far more epic feeling than the original. Tons of new characters are introduced, and some may be disappointed that Alita herself haven’t got as much screen time as in the first series. Some of the major happenings include a gigantic flashback, explaining the post-apocalyptical world and the setting of the original series. Another large part concentrates on a tournament (this is still an action-oriented manga after all). A few readers have been skeptical to this, but personally I think the manga-ka incorporated these elements very well since it greatly explains the sociopolitical nature of the setting. It also answers some of the questions that were left unsolved in the first series. Overall I think Last Order excellently build the story upon the aspects that made the original great. The manga still revolve around questions about identity/ego and the definition of free will. |

IMHO the original series is better, but Last Order is still great and easily my most interesting ongoing series at the moment. |

Well, thanks guys! I would be a little bummed that Alita doesn't get as much time in the spotlight. I absolutely love her character. But I still definitely plan on picking this up now. Much appreciated.

Got vol. 11 yesterday and just finished it. I have to say I'm a little torn. On one hand it's as excellently drawn and enjoyable read as always, and I can't wait for the next volume to be published. On the other, it's increasingly obvious that the series has turned into a typical (though very well executed) shonen fightfest. Admittedly welldeveloped side characters take the center stage once again and the fights are getting to be so longwinded and superpowered that even Zekka's dream from the previous volume doesn't seem so farfetched after all. It's for these reasons that I have to continue to rate Last Order lower than the original series.
(Anomaly, WTH ?! I wonder what on Earth made Kishiro to settle on THAT character design ? Kinda ruined some of the dramatics in that fight.) |
