Man the Valis games were awful. The SD Vails game (Syd of Valis) on the Genesis was terrible.

I enjoyed a lot of the old Valis games back in the day. It was a sad day when I heard they sold the rights to make a porn game rather than, you know, a game more in line with the classics.

I like how Harry appears to be hell bent on smashing the Irem logo.
Way back in 2004, Noriyoshi Ohba explained (also see here)that Sakura Taisen V: Episode 0 was made specifically with the intention of appealing to the North American market, although as we know, nothing came of it. I remember reading an interview with him all those years ago that went a little more in-depth, and he explained the idea for an action game prequel came to mind because Americans are "all about action!", but unfortunately, I can't seem to dig any of that old stuff up... |

PHANTASY STAR IV YES. That is my favorite game in the universe. Since I still have my original cartridge and also have it on the Sega Genesis Collection on my PSP, it'll be hard to justify buying it again on Virtual Console... but I'd probably do it.

Speaking of Persona 4, it'll be a while before that game's popularity dies out. And maybe even clash with Ar tonelico 2, with people playing both at once for all we know. Meanwhile, Japan already released Tales of Hearts and announced plans for another Tales game for the Wii in the future. Star Ocean 4 will also be over the horizon before you know it. It's a good time for JRPGs.
So X-Edge is getting the U.S. treatment. I hope it gets some great actors and actresses. Morrigan to this day hasn't had a U.S. actress in games, so this'll be a good chance to see if we can get someone who can match the sexiness of Yayoi Jinguuji's voice. The Megaman commercials I've seen numerous times now, the Breath of Fire ones I'm seeing for the first time (funny hearing that from a dragon-fanatic like me). Now if only they would make more dragon-centric anime, and none of that "turn into a human form" crap either. God, Ryukihei, where are you when I need you!? About Valis: Telenet didn't exactly do much worth mentioning after the 90's - Wolf Team had left them during that time, which I imagine didn't help matters much. It seems they just couldn't evolve to the extent they needed to in the post 16-bit era.
They did manage to put out a pair of Valis mobile phone games, one in about 2005 and another that they seemed to squeak out sometime in 2007. Telenet was dead by November of that year. Both games apparently feature a multiple outfit system for Yuko. |

Actually, while you'd expect an anime license fighting game to be softball, Unlimited Codes is about as convoluted as a Nasu monologue. Going by match videos and the experience of others, the game is ungodly complicated, working under the "Guilty Gear combos are too easy" philosophy". Enjoy this video for a taste of the basic (completely nonsensical) system and for somebody comboing UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS, a setup that requires the entire match to perform:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g36bLR62gnk One more thing: I once dared to brave the CGs of Valis X. Valis X is.... pretty horrifying, and I'm not just saying that because it's a good old game made into a z-grade porno. It's just really messed up and awful stuff. If they ever animated it you'd have to show a Horrors of the Internet ID card at the counter to buy it. |

wow....now i'm officially shocked. it was unthinkable for ANY Sakura Taisen games to get licensed here even the understandable STV since it is set in America. to think it took almost a decade to get one out of the five games (from the main series) to get picked up. hell has frozen over....but i couldn't be happier

im happy for Sakura Taisen, X-Edge, Hammerin' Harry, and Mana Khemia 2 coming to America even if the Sakura Taisen game is actually Sakura Taisen V but hey im not complaining and who knows maybe the older ones might get ported over to like PSP or something like that. I am disappointed that we will never get the Fate Unlimited Codes games though.

Ah Breath of Fire, I haven't heard any news of that series in years. The commerical for Breath of Fire and Mega Man were quite neat as well.
Phantasy Star is also a cool series, but I haven't been able to play any of the games since the release on Game Boy Advance (which I think was about almost six years ago). I wouldn't mind a re-mastered Breath of Fire I for Nintendo Dual Screen, but I know that isn't going to to happen for a couple more years. Happy Holiday's Todd, I look forward to reading your column in 2009. |

I own the PowerDolls video game and still have like the 8 or 9 patches disk they had to fix it which was very hard to apply from what I remember. It does not run on my Windows Vista or XP computers. The game was really fun to keep the 'Girls' alive and restarting battles if any died was routine. I also own the VHS PowerDolls Anime and it was 3/4 full of commercials for other shows as it was only like 18 minutes long. Now it was bad .
I remember calling the company that made the game PowerDolls about some issue with the patcher program they had too. Anyway a quote from the game I will never forget for you all. "Congratulations... You .. have .. completed .. the .. mission.. ! " |

I still have my copy of Mendel Palace... smashing dolls into walls by shuffling tiles really gets old after a few minutes, and for a 250+ stage game with no save or password option... ugh.
Although the hero has pretty awesome fashion sense. All the ladies love Lavender overalls, you know. |

A North American release of Sakura Taisen V? Oh, cautious rapture!

I think your mistaken about FUC (worst acronym ever ). As a poste upthred has said its system is just as deep as most well respected (and well played) fighting games such as Guilty Gear or Arcana Hearts. Its also getting serious consideration from "hard-core" fighting fan's over on Shoryuken and other such forums. Its certainly not the standard anime fighter shovelware.
