I expect the riots of outrage to take place immediately afterwards.

Maybe we'll get lucky and someone will steal the footage and destroy it.

Of course like with any good biological weapon, they probably have more.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Japanese attendees laugh this movie out of the Festa. I wonder what Toriyama's reaction will be to this?

Well, at least we'd have broken even. Bay attended a premiere of Transformers in Japan, and the audience applauded at the end (which apparently is highly unusual in Japan). So one good adaptation of a Japanese concept (TF did originate in Japan, like it or not), and one bad adaptation.

As for Toriyama, he'd probably be like, "well, at least it's not as bad as GT." Wink However, I imagine Kishi, Oda, and Kubo will be thinking, "oh god, what if they try to adapt OUR series?!".

Your prediction for the holy shonen trinity's creators' reaction is hilarious. Laughing

At least, I think Oda shouldn't have anything to worry about, as his series didn't gain enough notoriety in the U.S. yet. Kishimoto and Kubo, on the other hand... Razz

You just know the attendees are going to be saying "Worst Jump Festa Ever"! BTW, why is Japan getting it first, again, when it's the smaller market, and hasn't been seriously into DB for at least a decade?

Quote:
the rest of the panel will introduce special guests from the film for a live discussion.

"Mr. Wong. Do you need us to help you slit your stomach for disgracing DB?" Rolling Eyes

Karma: From what I hear, the Japanese are too polite to eff up theaters, no matter how much something sucks.

doctor: I'm assuming the Japanese liked Bay's Transformers since they're only slightly less dumb than their anime sequels of the show.

I'd say they're still into Dragonball. The sales for DBZ discs tend to be at the top for Anime and they still sell a lot of merchandise. They even have more Dragonball games than we do.

The reaction would be "EPIC FAIL!" as all 12 audience attendees of this panel smacks their foreheads simultaneously in dissappointment!

Akira Toriyama will cry... oh yes he will...

Greed: The series makes money, but Japan is rarely enough to bail out a production that could end up being very costly. Hell, Final Fantasy probably makes more money in Japan through merchandise alone, and that didn't save Spirits Within.

Toriyama said he liked GT. I really wonder how Toriyama's successors in a sense will like what they see. Despite them doing their own thing they are still big Dragonball fans.

The Dragonboxes did well for Toei, and all of the Dragonball(Z,GT,Movies) Dragonbox singles sell well too. The games are big time sellers. Dragonball is still pretty much alive in Japan despite being dormant from 97-2002.

Why anyone would think a live action version of DB would work is insane to me.

They honestly could have just waited a few years and done a CG movie and had better results.

Obviously everybody who doesn't like the movie even before it's out has never been to Japan.

Wellness: A live-action DB can work if you have the right people. [See the Neo vs. Smiths fight scene in Matrix Reloaded and Forbidden Kingdom.] Fox got the cheapest people, even though the production probably already ironically will be over-budget, due to re-shoots.

Contrary to popular belief...the Dragonball manga and anime will not change due to any Dragonball movie coming out. It's just an adaption. Things will be different in order to cater to a different audience. And yes, their audience consists of more then just the die hard DBZ fans. I have a feeling that it will prove to be successful in Japan and moderately successful in the States. I have a feeling that the people that think it will suck will probably all end up seeing it, if nothing else to vent all the more of how horrible they think it is (heck, some might even enjoy it!). I, for one, am looking forward to the film even as a hardcore Dragonball fan. I've seen the so called trailer and production stills and all and I think it looks like a fun adaption. Will it be just like the anime or manga? Most likely not. Do I think it needs to be? No. If I want to read the manga or watch the anime I'll do just that. Even anime adaptions don't fully capture (some more then others) the mangas they are adapting. Adaptions should be taken for what they are, a fun new take on a familiar concept. Could it still suck? Sure. Could it be great movie? I don't see why not. We still have a few months to go before the final verdict is in. See you all at the movies.
