Kujian could've been 90 minutes of bears spinning beach balls on their noses, and I would've bought it, just to watch more Genshiken.
...as opposed to 90 minutes of *actual* bears spinning beach balls on their noses. Which would you probably not just buy, but camp out for, get the Blu-Ray and the DVD, and then host a viewing party.
^^;;;

I do remember from the Media Blasters Panel from Otakon that the only way Media Blasters could get and show Genshiken 2 and the OVAs was to get and release Kujibiki. It was part of the agreement in the contact they said. I remember the quote very well from Otakon...
"You must have Kujibiki Unbalance. No Genshiken until you release Kujibiki."
"OK, Sure thing, whatever."

Woo, now I know why I can never find S.S. Astro in stores. It's a larger size! Thanks, Albert!

Jyu-Oh-Sei really is a great show for the boxset treatment, as it doesn't really keep one's interest over the long-term but is perfect for a day or two or marathon viewing. I personally really liked the first few episodes, though, mainly because I thought I was in for some cool lord-of-the-files type of story where our heroes have to learn to build their own society. It didn't turn out that way, but it still worked out okay.
Not to mention how the last two episodes turn everything completely on its head. And I didn't see it coming thanks to the clever red herring in the opening. "Ha ha, I may look like your brother all grown up but I'm actually Third! Your brother is dead forever, so much so that the writers have completely forgotten about him."

13-episode box set releases are quite practical. However, there are a couple of US companies that do a similar treatment to Tokusatsu (live-action Japanese superhero shows) series.
BCI Eclipse (a branch of Navarre) not only released the original Ultraman series in two thinpack sets, but they also did a entire series thinpack release for Iron King (which has 26 episodes) and Super Robot Red Baron (which has 39 episodes)! The incredible thing is that they do liner notes for these series (which are old).
Of course, that's merely scratching the surface compared to what the Generation Kikaida branch of JN Productions (a company based in Honolulu, Hawaii) did: they did an entire box set release for the Kamen Rider V3 series(which has 52 episodes) from the get-go!
At any rate, this may be a profitable trend, as I have a foible for box sets.

I'm definitely a fan of the 13 episode sets. If nothing else it shows that Funimation was not only serious, but successful when they said they were going to push to get the Japanese companies to allow straight to box set releases. So I say good job!
The only real downside I see is that some might think that a show that goes straight to a box set wouldn't be as good as one that gets the traditional treatment. Hopefully this isn't the case because it's certainly advantageous for fans.

Marathoned Black Lagoon Second Barrage this weekend, and it was intense. Absolutely loved it. I love the nuns and priests. No big-eyed weepy wussy nuns. These are nuns with attitude. Great stories (those kids were creepy as hell), and great characters. The only thing that really bothered me is that since I watch everything subbed, it was a bit strange to have Revy and Rock flipping back and forth between English and Japanese, but supposedly speaking English for the most part, even while speaking Japanese. I might have to give this a roll dubbed, to see if it is one of those very rare cases (in my opinion) of a dub actually working.
I also didn't realize until Second Barrage that the DVD covers were reversible, so I had to go back to the original set and see which covers I liked best to show out.

Trust me, the dub won't disappoint. I think the first season actually was named the best English ensemble for last year on ANN's year-end award/recap segment, so it's definitely good.

To be fair, the manga never says any scientific BS about Karin's blood not having antigens. It simply says that human blood-types don't matter for a vampire. I would call that more the fault of the anime producers who thought Karin needed to be more semi-logical with the vampire lore. They must have also thought making such a medicre adaption to a manga series was a good idea. At least the manga explains why human and vampire relations are frowned upon. Not to mention a story that actually goes somewhere.
*sigh* I hate what the Karin anime became by not following the manga passed it's start, though I will probably still buy these DVDs just for the sake of completing my box set, and not really hating it because I still adore the characters that aren't anime only.

It wouldn't matter for a vampire, but it should matter for an unvampire, since she's infusing her blood into a human. They had to write in an excuse as to why she's able to do so without having the human reject her transfusion. I thought it would've been easier to just make her a universal donor, but I guess they went a different route. I've never read the manga, though, so maybe this is something that's anime-specific.
(Edit: Someone later in this thread pointed out my factual error. I was under some weird impression that her blood type was B, which is why I was kicking up such a fuss about her not having antigens. )

This was jarring for me, too. Especially since Revy makes such a fuss about not being able to understand Japanese that well. Her English is pretty bad for someone who'd rather speak English than Japanese... I think it would've made more sense if they had found a voice actress that had a news-caster standard accent, rather than someone who just happens to speak English well.

The boxset thing is cool for short series like Jyu,But,for long ones,I think it just basically eats through what could have been a nice release run. Maybe it's just me speaking as a long time Anime fan(actual consumer since 2002)But I loved waiting for the next DVD or VHS for a show to be released and run to suncoast or blockbuster to get it.
Oh yeah, and Black lagoon should be rental space.

This is going to sound really out there, but I found Kujibiki Unbalance to be a guilty pleasure. It's a satirical parody when you recognize it as such, it mixes in so many anime/otaku cliches/elements into a weird package, and without expecting anything I watched what was light, easygoing entertainment. I'm not saying it's a 'good' series, and I do acknowledge Genshiken is far superior, but even with these bad reviews Kujibiki isn't so bad to me.

As much as I try and fight it, the pedant in me really won't let this past. Blood that lacks any antigens (that are indeed found on the surface of blood cells), is classified as O-. They've basically taken a convoluted way to say she's a universal donor.

I've not seen Karin so I'm totally guessing on this one, but aren't Blood types an indicator of personality types to some people in Japan? Do you think that maybe the creators were trying to avoid having her be labeled a certain personality by avoiding given her a specific blood type?

I'm fairly sure they can exist...co-existence, otoh, might be a problem. IIRC disc 5 contains episode 18, which was strangely hilarious as a boys' love interlude in a male-oriented series. Yeah, Karin isn't destined for greatness or anything, but I found it to be good light-hearted fun with a few serious moments. And Winner Sinclair was one of the best exaggerated foreigners to grace the small screen.
