I was wondering why some pieces looked the same. I thought it was just my eyes fooling me, because there was so much art.

It was so stupid. Otakon shut down AA, had a lawyer there and still nothing really was done.
I think that artist should be banned from AA @ Otakon in the future.

I never went to the Artist Alley, so I never knew about this at all. But I was in the Dealer's Room and the Kappei Yamaguchi Q&A Panel (which, by the way, was GREAT!!).

What really needs is a country-wide or even North America-wide organization to facilitate communication between all cons because the same group has reportedly pulled similar stunts at AX, Anime North, etc, and they will be appearing at Anime Weekend Atlanta next month as well. One con cracking down isn't enough. Every con needs to keep an eye for these people.

This person sounds like a repeat offender so I think this person should be banned from the con for 13 years -- one for every extra table he took.

As the article said, nothing was done because there was not sufficient proof.
I don't believe we actually shut down the alley (except possibly to deal with the leaking pipe). Strong suspicion is enough to make us re-evaluate the rules, but not enough, on its own, to kick someone out, or to ban them permanently. That is why we *investigate* the claims, all above board, and make sure that we aren't being used for someone's petty grudges.

Banning the offender is the likely punishment. However, the problem comes in identifying the offender when he/she/they apply for membership at next year's con. Registration is usually done via mail or web site. A simple name & address change can usually hide a banned person's status. How is next year's preregistration con staff going to know that PreRegisteringConMember#345 is the same person as BannedConMemberFromLastYear if the offender lies about his personal information?
Edit: Having read jvowles' post, I'll change my first statement to "Banning the offender is the likely punishment if guilt is proven."

Perhaps require some form of unique identification in order to purchase a table, like a drivers license number?

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about this a while back... (the 14 tables part)
The guy who had so many tables, I believe, denied it ever happened or used a lie of omission. But no one believes him because the evidence seems so obvious.
This guy seems to lie about a lot of stuff. Even some of the respectable artists are on to him...

Well why don't you just give groups more than 1 table and make them pay for the priviledge? Is it a space issue? Being in more than 1 area could generate more profit for the artists.

I say require registration IN PERSON (and then open it up to web registration if there are spots left).
The competition for Artists alley slots at cons is crazy... I heard that anime boston's AA filled up in 30 minutes after the online registration form opened.
If you make people show up somewhere in person you make sure they are all different people (avoiding the problems here), and it also gives an advantage to local artists who live near the con itself which I think is a good thing.
I bet there are plenty of them to fill up an artists alley.

I can't speak for Otakon, but the cons I worked on never wanted to sell more than 2 tables to the same person/group in order to have diversity in the dealer's room & art show. We wanted lots of variety for our attendees which wouldn't happen if we sold lots of tables to the same individual.

I doubt any con would ever do that. There's no reason to privilege local artists over the ones who would be planning to come to a city just for the con. Plus, online registration is simple much easier and most of the time works very well. It would be unfair to punish everyone else because of one group.
I'm curious as to how many people were involved with this, since you'd need someone to sit at each table at least. With so many people, it would be hard to catch these guys until they were set up and it was obvious that it was them (as it says below, each person could register separately and have their own ID and own group name). Even registering in person wouldn't solve that.

Because most people have fourteen friends, even selfish egomaniacal tools.
