Watchmen deserves that spot- it's certainly better than anything else on that list. It sort of irritates me that some people are only reading it now that a movie is coming out, but I guess it's better than the people who won't read it and will be completely baffled about the sort of story it really is when they go see the film (but given the record Hollywood has adapting Moore's works, they may not be).

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

I'm not surprised that Watchmen would be number one, especially now that they have the movie on the rise. Although I'm also glad to see that Batman has had a surge in popularity. It's going to be sad to see Fruits Basket go, since it's doing so well in the country. But all things must end.

I wonder which Batman titles made it. Dark Knight Returns seems obvious (always popular, and the name is close to the movie's title), but what about the other 4?

And yes, if anyone on this forum hasn't read Watchmen, drop what you're doing and pick it up now. It's an incredible read.

Ah, thank you. Good choices, minus the All-Star. Just awful, I'd expect better from Frank (but then again, DKSA was disappointing as well). All-Star Superman, on the other hand, is surprisingly excellent from what I've read so far, and I'd recommend it, even to those who really don't care for Superman stories.

It'd be nice to see some other Japanese manga up there at 1#, 2# and 3#.

Pretty soon Naruto will be up there by itself, so there will be a need for another manga series to really bring some hype to the American manga fandom in order to be able to really make an impact.

Bleach is still ongoing and makes the list, and Death Note is STILL making the chart, impressive after all this time.

Maybe the next long-running anime that comes to Cartoon Network/Adult Swim will heighten the manga awareness and get it in the chart. D. Gray-man seems the most likely choice assuming a TV deal's made, and Soul Eater could be a possibility whenever its anime gets licensed.

Preferably manga that isn't generic shonen, at that.

Watchmen's basically a pompous fanfic masquerading as an epic, but I admit that trailer does have me psyched. Anyway, those strong Batman sales might be good for that manga from the Togari guy.

That "fanfic" revolutionized the comic book industry (along with DKR and Maus), influenced countless works, was widely praised by virtually all reviewers, is Stan Lee's favorite non-Marvel comic book, is being made into a major motion picture, and even made TIME Magazine's Top 100 Novels since 1923 (it's a COMIC, and they still allowed it in! Do you know how rare that is?).

Last time I checked, fanfics never accomplish anything like that. Honestly, if you didn't like the book, at least explain with a reasonable argument.

doctor: TIME is owned by the same company which owns DC; so that doesn't impress me. And Stan Lee probably likes it, because he's been writing long enough to "get" it. As for revolutionizing the comic industry, I'm thought killing major characters, in order to sell more copies of a series, was what hurt the industry. Rolling Eyes Anyway, I'm not into Watchmen, because it's a tribute of stuff I'm already familiar with, and it doesn't really add anything new.

Wow. Holy crap you're dense... Watchmen isn't a tribute to stuff you're "familiar" with it...it INVENTED the stuff you're familiar with.

And last I checked...fanfics don't win Hugo awards.

-Watchmen didn't start THAT. That started with deaths like Elektra, Gwen Stacy, Jason Todd, etc.
-I didn't realize comic books were spoiler[blowing up New York, having the "villain" explain how murdering millions is justifiable and the heroes end up realizing he's right (or at least, that exposing him will make things worse), showing America at it lowest points throughout history, having "heroes" shoot pregnant woman/commit sexual crimes/slaughter dogs/etc., showing onscreen nudity of men and women, etc.] from 1984 and earlier. Come on, the book was written in 1985. You better believe it added something new. TBH, I'm surprised there wasn't more controversy over it back then. But imagine parents nowadays catching their kids reading it, they would go nuts (lord knows they freak out over all the other forms of entertainment already). But then again, I doubt kids can fully appreciate Watchmen at such a young age.

Edit: Thanks, Who is This Guy?!..............who are you? Very Happy

Guy: Dude, it did not invent anything. You can tell the characters are allusions to other comic book heroes, and that it's just trying to portray them as having weaker and more despicable sides to their personalities. And as for the fanfic argument, the Hugo people nominated Firefly, so...

doom:

*cough* Hulk, Galactus, Black Panther, Punisher, Lone Wolf and Cub, etc. *cough*
