Fullmetal Alchemist

I was very surprised that there wasn't a thread for a franchise as big as FMA already, so I decided to make one. Razz

I'm only on volume 15 (I haven't been able to go to Borders to pick up 16), but it was very interesting to finally get the full story on the Ishbal war. It was also a nice touch that Arakawa interviewed WW II veterans to give her story a more authentic feel. I know that I'm behind, so it would be appreciated if you guys kept spoilers from the latest volume hidden. Also, I don't mean to be discriminatory, but this thread is only for the Viz release. Razz

I'm up to thirteen, but I find the whole series and everything in it just makes me love it more and more!

I'm really dreading 14 though, since I know that spoiler[Ling turns into Greed.]

Hey, skyesage, that is a cool and EXTREMELY memorable scene. Sad or not...look forward to it.

And, HOORAY! Now there's a discussion thread for both my favorite manga! (Fruits Basket AND Fullmetal?!)

So, how will this go? Organized? Disorganized? Carrying discussion through volumes or discussing characters or events?

By the way, I'm on volume 16, got it when it came out. I'll try not to ruin it for you except to say...one of the funniest gag comics ever, if I remember right. Veiled jokes about porn are always funny, right? VEILED jokes, that is. Cool

Would guys say that the manga is worth investing in? I just completed the anime DVDs, and I'm watching my way through them right now. If the manga storyline is drastically different than the anime's, it'll kill me if I don't know what happens...so yeah. Laughing

I've been reading Fullmetal on the internet (I just read ch.83) and love it so much I had to buy all the books up to 16. That so I can reread all the stuff that I missed. Volume 15 was a great flashback. It made both sides of the war good and bad. I mean Scar seem like an ok guy until he woke up with his brothers arm, and Roy seemed like a dick burning that old man (well come to think of it Roy is kind of a dick anyway...and that’s why we love him). Also don't forget we get to see of the handlebar moustache alchemist...ahhh I mean the Iron Blood alchemist and more of the silver alchemist (which I wish there was more of him. He seem so cool...I mean he got a top hat, you can't beat that.). I also notice something different when I read the viz version to the internet one. At the beginning of ch.59 they took out Barry the Chopper and Number 48. I wonder why?

I've preordered up to volume 16 from RACS. Is that the final volume?

I've read the first 6 volumes so far.

I'm also very surprised there wasn't a discussion thread for this. Thanks for making one. Smile I'll try and join as soon as I catch up.

Yes, you really should. In most people's opinions, the manga is way better than the anime. And the story is similar at first but then changes into something drastically different around vol. 8 (I don't remember the exact number).

Nope. It's still ongoing in Japan.

Started collecting this a while after the anime finished. It's freaking fantastic. I mean i kinda liked the anime, but the manga is clearly superior.
One of the high points is, imo, volume 15.
I think i've caught up to the american releases now, though. I'm on volume 16.
Edit: I'm importing the us books to sweden

I just saw that. I'm assuming that Viz only gets the manga that's released in volumes and that the scanlations were from the manga scans from Shonen Gangan, and that Arakawa wanted to change those panels before they were made into a volume but after it was published in Shonen Gangan. That's a total guess though. Anime smile + sweatdrop

You're welcome, but I was kinda reluctant to make one until you said that I should make one over on ANN FF. And the story deviates from the anime at the end of volume 7.

Um... can I say all of the above? Laughing It's all right if you guys mention what happened in the latest volume and discuss it. But just make sure to use the spoiler tags for people that haven't catched up.

Oh my! My #2 all time favorite series finally has a discussion thread for it! Anime hyper I remember following the anime on Adult Swim for the first time and having discussions about each episode with my 2 college friends I mention time and time again ( Wink ) and those were certainly some great discussions. So now I'm looking forward to having manga story discussions with you guys. Thanks very much indeed braves for making this thread! Very Happy

Well, personally I wouldn't say it's WAY better than the anime, maybe just slightly better. Personally my preferences towards the manga are mostly in the fact that the world, characters, and certain ideas and themes are expanded upon that the anime doesn't quite explore (like the aforementioned vol. 15, probably my favorite volume so far Cool ), but the basic heart and atmosphere of what the source material stands for are captured quite well in both equally, as does seem to be the style of storytelling. I just don't think people like how the anime ended, which personally I had no problems with.

Yeah, that sounds about right, from what I can remember. In fact once I finally backtrack to collect all the volumes I missed from my old Manga Cow days (don't shoot! I still am in a way though, although not nearly as much as before though, so don't worry Wink ) I'm thinking about just collecting from vol. 7 or 8 or so onwards, since I have the anime box sets for the rest. It's still hard to say though, because even that first part that is cannon, it's the same basic story but a lot of things are told in different ways and orders. Personally I don't prefer one over the other though because there were some things that the manga did in that respect that were better, yeah, but at the same time I felt there were certain things the anime did better in that respect as well.

Yes, certainly a very, very cool and memoralbe, VERY sad scene, as spoiler[Ling is one of my favorites as well. Also can't help but feel bad for Lan Fan and Mei as well though. Sad Hopefully they'll be able to bring him back somehow.]

Oh, for a second there I though you were talking about the spoiler["Fullmetal Cosmetic Surgery Clinic"] one! I just couldn't stop laughing at that one! Laughing Same for the spoiler["Secret's Revealed"] one as well, actually. Wink I don't remember any veiled porn jokes ones though.........

Anyways, can't wait 'till y'all catch up so we can get the official discussion started! Very Happy

You're welcome, BrothersElric. I got my allowance doubled for this week because I made good grades on my progess report, so I'll be able to get the volume sometime this week (along with Monster)Very Happy Maybe one day I'll get a job so I won't have to be so dependent on my parents. Laughing

In comparison to the movie, I liked the ending for TV series more. I just thought that ending for the movie was fanservice to spoiler[the people who couldn't stand to see Ed and Al apart.] >.>

Heh heh, I can relate, I was once your age too. Anime smile + sweatdrop In fact, in my current situation I've got a job, but it's not a very good one..... Enough to buy certain things (like some manga and anime anyways Wink ) but I really wish I had more...... So yeah, right now I kind of have to rely on my parents myself more than I'd like to.

Yeah, I prefer the anime's ending more myself. The movies ending wasn't all that bad either, but it just couldn't hold a candle to the anime's, much like the movie as a whole itself.

*raises hand* I don't. In fact, I thought the manga, while an awesome graphic novel, only rose to the top-notch dramatic standard of the anime in about volume 9. When it became as believable and involving dramatically as the more simple, grounded, less fantastical anime had been at that point while retaining all its complexity, I was able to put them on the same pedestal, and started buying the manga and not just reading other people's. Laughing

Depending on how the manga develops/ends, it may surpass it, but I don't know. The anime started strong, and finished strong. The manga is going well but still up in the air. Personally, I thought the flashbacks in v. 15 were too long and the general whole of v.16 fairly boring compared to the powerhouse of events and development from v.9 thru 14. We'll see. (Although I agree that the movie was a bit of a dip in quality for the anime, it was STILL pretty awesome-sauce, and a happy ending! "Fair" or not, I can't disparage a happier ending for a melancholy story.)

I really like him too, but you can't deny how tough/cool/stupidly awe-inspiring he is in that scene. Scary. I love that spoiler[he's bleeding out of every orifice in his body and he still screams "You can't control me! I'm the future king of Xing!" and then he takes a flippin' BITE out of a floating life force spirit. Dyang.]

Noooo...I was referring to a comic that's actually in v. 15, my bad. I think it's titled, "Pay a Fee if You want to see more" or something like that. Basically, Ed compares the way the Gate works to paying quarters for a strip tease channel in a hotel. Laughing
