And I thought the Yu-Gi-Oh cards were expensive at $100 for some cards!

I think I have a better use for my money than trading cards.

I have never even heard of a card for Magic: The Gathering selling for that much, and Magic isn't a fad. That is ridiculous. Yes I am saying that like YugiOh the YU YU Hakusho game is a fad.

well it was only given to employes so figure less then 100 or so made(Wild assed guess) and is signed by the creator of the game(i dont care) that being said there are cards for magic that would fetch that if they were ever offered for sale. Like the One of kind World touriment trophy Card they made around 96 or so

Actually, Coral Skipper was simply saying that both Yu-Gi-oh and the Yu Yu Hakasho game are fads. Coral didn't mention that he liked any card game. |

Wow. What an unbelievable waste of money. I don't see how that one card can possibly be worth that $938 in the long run. Maybe I'm being narrow-minded and cynical, but I can't forsee the owner loving the game that much for the rest of his/her life to make it worth $938. I used to have DBZ cards "worth" $50-100, but now I'd be lucky to get that much for my entire collection. I guess I'll just file this along with welfare and Medicare in my personal list of "practically needless expenditures."

Fad is right... in fact the simple fact that it IS a flash in the pan should explain the high price. Witness the price of Rob Liefeld books just a month after they were published (and then look at their value now.) Sadly scarcity and uniquiness often dictates price (also witness the Kopi Luwak coffee of Indonesia.) Next week it will be something else...

The saddest part about this is that once you think about it, this is just a cookie-cutter card game tied to a moderately successful franchise with a dumbed down rule structure lifted from older, better quality games of a similar type. To pay $938 for a card from a game of this nature is outright pathetic.
Perhaps if it were from one of the aforementioned "mainstay" card games (y'know, the kind that sometimes have their national tournaments broadcast on television?), or a card of ever greater significance (first-print Saddam Hussein Ace of Spades, for example) I could see such a high bid. But...yeah...as it is...no. |

It might have been some strange rich person who bought it. Maybe the rich person had a kid who liked Yu Yu Hakusho, and wanted to get them a present for a birthday etc. What do they get for there kid who likes the YYH cardgame, well the rarest card in the world of course. It would be strange if it were some regular middle class blue collar person buying it for themselves, but if it was a rich person who had money to spend on that sort of thing for like a son/daughter niece/nephew it wouldn't be so crazy.

Hell, I don't understand what's so bad about paying that much for a card...I mean, it's not as if any of you are spending the money to obtain it. If they're able to get that much out of a card, then by all means let them run with it! Would I pay for the this wonderous card? Not within my lifetime, but being a hyporite isn't my point. But the wonderous part about the American economy is what some other poster said was sad: scarcity and uniqueness. That's but one pillar of economics, albeit a major one, that allows for the power of purchase and commercialism we enjoy today.

I've bid more than that (much more) for original anime art. To date though I've never won an auction for anything Anime related worth more than $550. The point being, if you are interested in a particular thing (Anime in my case, Yu Yu Hakusho in this guy's), and have the money to spare, its not a waste of money. Now then, if this guy has trouble paying his rent, he's an idiot, but on the other had, if the $1000 expenditure doesn't affect his personal finances, and it brings him some sort of pleasure, then it really isn't a wate of money. |
