I apologize in advance for the amount of noobery I'm about to put you people through >_>

Does this set contain the alternate ending to the series, End of Evangelion? The box states that it contains all 26 episodes, and 4 directors cut episodes. I just don't know it the movie counted as episodes or not, thus being included with the set. I just need to know if I should hunt down the individual End of Evangelion disk (which I believe was released in the states in 2002), or if this boxset already has what I'm looking for. |

Someone who actually owns that thinpack might know the answer better than me, but I own all the individually-released Evangelion Platinum DVDs, and as far as I know, the thinpack has the same content that the individual releases do. The End of Evangelion movie wasn't included with any of my DVDs. I think there are just director's cut versions of four of the episodes, probably the last four. I'm pretty sure there were director's cut versions of at least the last two, so that's why I'm thinking that. I ended up buying the Manga Entertainment boxset of End of Evangelion and Death & Rebirth to get a copy of the movie.
Anyway, hope that helps!

Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion are separate. The are movies and where never part of the TV series or included in any release of the series. ADV never even owned the license to those. So you'll have to buy those separately. And you'll need both, since the first part of EoE is actually part of Death and Rebirth.

Just be ready for a drastic drop in video quality when you go from the Platinum release episodes from ADV to the versions of the two movies released in North America by Manga Entertainment.

The picture appears like there are only 6 discs so more than likely the DVDs are stripped from the extras. But if you're anything like me, you don't care about extras. I just watch the show and that's it. From the back of the 7 individual discs, there appears to be interviews but with "American Names" (Matt Greenfield, Sean McCoy). I can care less what these guys have to say the only interviews I'll actually watch are from the creators or directors. And if 2 guys named Matt and Sean created Eva, I'll be really surprised.
DVD 7 says "The Mythology of Eva" which makes me want to check it out, but I'm in no hurry.
Why is that odd? The first 13 episodes of the original Dragonball are not owned by FUNimation. ADV does not own Full Metal Panic TSR. Ghost in the Shell is all over the place. While Manga distributes the original movie, both Manga and Bandai distribute Stand Alone Complex. Then Dreamworks released GITS 2 Innocence. And also Cowboy Bebop. BANDAI distributes the TV series, but Columbia Tristar has the movie rights. Ninja Scroll, X, Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X, R.O.D., Lupin III, and Blood/Blood+ also have different distributors between movies and TV series. And that's just what I know from my collections. Who knows how many more are out there. |

There are indded a ton of titles like Sakura Taisen, Macross, R.O.D., Bubblegum Crisis, Patlabor, Appleseed, Captain Harlock, Urusei Yatsura, Super Gals, and Saiyuki that have multiple distributors. This is only a few of them since it is common practice.
The neatest thing I can think of is the Orange Road Animeigo box which has an empty spot where you can place the DVD the movie ADV released. They even have a disclaimer saying that they didn't forget to include the disc, but rather are offering you a spot to place their rival company ADV's disc. If you look at this week Shelf Life you can see the two Ah My Goddess box sets match each other visually very well although they were also released by different companies. It's nice when these companies keep each other in mind. |

Ugh...that feature wasn't too impressive. But I am glad I got the individual releases, because the booklets that come with them feature some very enlightening commentary from the Japanese side of things (albeit very poorly translated). |
