Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp (TV) Source: South Korean Web Novel (completed @ 10 volumes, by Yuin) Demographic: Animation Studio: Maho Film Genres: comedy, drama, fantasy, romance Themes: atonement, isekai, medicine, redemption, reincarnation Plot Summary: Aoi Takamoto was once an evil empress named Elise before being executed by her husband Linden. When Elise is reincarnated into the modern world as Aoi, she becomes a surgeon to atone for her mistakes. However, after she dies in a plane crash, she is once again reincarnated back into her former life as Elise, 10 years before her execution. She avoids marrying Linden this time around to prevent a tragedy. With her medical knowledge, she decides she wants to become a doctor again in this life. Air Date & Platform: January 10, 2024 (Wednesday) Available on: Crunchyroll Episode Count / Runtime: 12 episodes ---------------------------------- The double-reincarnation kinda' has me curious. And I'm always up for a good redemption story. Last edited by Tony K. on Fri Apr 12, 2024 4:57 pm; edited 2 times in total |

Episode 1
Main character dies in an isekai and is reborn on Earth, so I guess that makes this a reverse isekai? But wait, she dies AGAIN and gets sent back to her original world, so now it's just an isekai, right? I dunno, seems like a pretty convoluted set up for a show that seems like it's just gonna be about a chick doing medical stuff in an 18th or 19th century style setting. I'll hang around long enough to catch her old time medicine-y schtick and decide from there. |

Me, I thought this one had a little more emotional heft than I was expecting, but my expectations were pretty low. I mean, some story about some Mary Sue getting isekai'd while the latest brooding Edward/Heathcliff rip-off hangs around? Not my usual thing.
Wait, it's a do-over? And she's an ex-villainess? ::::::::::::: ::::::::::::: How about an anime where somebody goes back to his previous life so that he can find out what he did to deserve having an odd fascination with ex-villainess do-over shows? Anyway, I'm in for a while dammit. But I have to say, all that aside, I liked the opening scene where the protag did the fox/finger game just because it was silly enough and secret enough not to seem cliche, and I liked that this particular dish of Mary Suet came from being reborn with memories of horrible behavior and genuine remorse. As to the over the top super surgeon stuff (no one dies on her operating table, etc) I went with the general idea and tried to let the skepticism go). |

Two episodes in and I'm still liking the show well enough. The thing I'm not liking much is Prince Harming, the male romantic lead who originally ignored, rejected, and ultimately executed Elise. But you know, I've never had much patience for most of the brooding, bratty pretty boys that female led romances often gravitate to, whether they be vampires or upper crust Victorian doorknobs. I liked Darcy. I thought Heathcliff and Mr. Rochester were losers.
Still, I like the dynamic where a character whose past knowledge has become fore knowledge tries to set things aright, or I wouldn't like these shows. I like Elise's earnest desire to redeem herself and her genuine passion for medicine and her new awareness of how vulnerable the love she has for her family is. |

Episode 2
Given my Nostradamus like powers of prediction, let me hazard a guess as to how this show is gonna shake out: Elise will become a doctor (again) AND get to be Empress where she will win the hearts of all and sundry with her compassion, knowledge and maturity. Princey-pooh will come to realize her wonderful nature and fall passionately and genuinely in love with her. In her spare time, Elise will invent a serum that cures moles, holes, colds and pimples on your bum. The end. Eh, fine by me. |

She needs to be careful talking up too much modern day medicine or else she is going to be accused of being a witch.

A little put-off by what seems to be a "the guy will like you if say no" - "Hard to get" vibe of their walk.
"You don't really like me, so I will let you go, be happy, you deserve it." ---"Well, NOW, I want you!" |

As I said in the Preview Guide thread, I haven't read the source, but my guess is that spoiler[she did not die in the present (show me the body), but has astrally projected into her past life to right her wrongs in person, rather than just atoning in her present life. Once she's done that, she'll end up back in the hospital and go on to save more people (maybe even the patient she was going to Germany for, if their case was not super urgent - with this woman, top her off with a couple pints of O-neg and some staples and she'll be good to go). To make that a satisfying outcome, we needed to see all that she left behind. That's why 3/4 of the first ep was spent on her Japanese life]. Even if it doesn't end that way, it should. |

Just wanna point out, Gina, that your prediction and mine don't conflict. The only difference is that yours projects further than mine does. And also...
...what the heck is this business about a Lamp??? |

I hadn't intended to counter your prediction, only, as you pointed out, add to it. If the series ends incomplete, I may have to look up the manhwa to find out how it actually does end now.
I image she'll have a lamp to light the way to her midnight house calls. Or she'll leave the lamp on so plague victims can find her office. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |

I was thinking that maybe she'll use a lamp to create a microscope. Seems to me the fictional timing might be right for the creation of a good microscope.

The lady with the lamp might be a reference to Florence Nightingale, being that was a nickname for her.
