Let’s be honest, this is because the Netflix show did so well. Now he’s gone from somewhat recognizable to instantly so.

Is that true? That's the real reason why Luffy got his own balloon float? Or there is more to this than what you said?

I was mostly joking, but when you hear Oprah discuss One Piece on The View, you know the show was a hit.

It's just a baseless assumption. People still try to push this narrative that OP is a niche series in the west. Even though Wano and especially G5's hype and Film Red's success beg to differ.

That kind of reminds me that for a long time people used to say that One Piece would never achieve mainstream popularity, sites like TvTropes said that due to the poor reception of the original 4Kids dub and One Piece's story focusing on pirates and other fantastical elements it didn't have as much mainstream appeal as Naruto or Bleach which are more overtly Japanese, and there were others who claimed OP was too cartoony and western-looking (I don't understand this one) and only serious shows like Cowboy Bebop and other adult-oriented anime can succeed at attracting a Western fanbase. I gotta wonder where are those people now, considering the success of the live-action show and that One Piece managed to attract a huge fanbase outside of Japan.

Depends on what part of west you’re talking about. It’s most definitely not that mainstream in the U.S.

Nah, the Macy's parade floats get decided on long in advance of the event. Companies apply for spots in the parade in January and Macy's gives its final decisions in February. So Luffy was approved for the parade over six months before the Netflix show even came out. I'm sure the success of Film Red played a role, though.

Either the name of a marine base in the series or an abbreviation of (Gear 5), Luffy’s new transformation that debuted in Wano.

The official NBC broadcast will feature carefully scripted material written on Toei's behalf. Anything goes on the CBS broadcast (they misgendered Bluey once).
