What a surprise, I thought we wouldn't see anything new from Captain Tsubasa until the next World Cup. Could it be because the manga is nearing completion or because of the success of Blue Lock?
Anyway, I look forward to seeing Tsubasa, or Oliver Atom as he is known where I'm from, again (though in this series' dub they started using the original Japanese names) |

I'm genuinely surprised to hear Viz Media actually licensed this second season, mainly because of the fact that they never even acted like they had season 1. They never promoted it, it never got streamed on any of the primary American services, it has still yet to be released on home video, and they didn't even get BangZoom! to dub it, sure it has a dub but unless I'm mistaken that dub was handled by a Miami studio and its TERRIBLE (not to mention the only way to watch it is throw Roku for some reason). Viz have usually been good about getting talented people to make quality dubs but it seems like they've done as bare minimum as possible. Honestly I think I'm more mad that they DID license S2 because it's so clear to me that they don't care about it. I'm not a fan of Captain Tsubasa but I 100% WOULD be by this point HAD Viz done their usual thing, I was really looking forward to this getting a solid dub so I could watch it because I know CT is a Weekly Shonen Jump classic and that's always an easy sell for me, but to this day I have no convenient way to watch it and the only dub that exists for it is almost unbearable for me (and this is coming from somebody who can still enjoy even mediocre dubs)

I'm a bit disappointed that Toshiyuki Kato and his team at david production won't handle this new season, but I'm very glad we're getting more Captain Tsubasa. Here's hoping the quality and high energy will remain the same.

@Ultimate N: What happened with the dub was unfortunate (though IIRC, it was paid for by Primo TV) but the blame for the lack of streaming when it was new should go to Japan for hiring Johnny's.
With it's founder now dead, there should be no problem getting any songs cleared for this season if they get work again. |

@NJ_ Was Johnny's a Japanese record label or something, did this also prevent Viz from being able to release the anime on home video? Either way I hope Viz still commission their own dub instead of using Primo TV's

I'm not sure this will get dubbed. Viz did not license this franchise for the English-speaking world. They got it because it's a legacy WSJ brand with strong appeal in Latin America. The dub only came about because a broadcaster (who's based in Miami) commissioned it, but their license to the show appears to have expired. The company who made that deal might not even have the rights to Viz's material anymore either.

Can't wait for Viz to botch the release in the West all over again.

From what it looks like, apparently the record label for the band that did the first season's op are uber hard to work with and made international distribution impossible so that's prolly why Viz didn't really distribute it in the first place, as for the dub, assuming things are better now and Viz can just distribute anime normally I would assume this would get dubbed now (Viz are pretty reliable when it comes to dubs) The only REAL concern now would be will Viz actually get a proper company to dub the original anime as well as this season or will they cheap out and just use the current dub that sucks |

Can't say I have the highest hopes with the new director, since I found Hypnosis Mic and Skeleton Knight in Another World to be painfully mediocre.

Johnny's wasn't the reason why the dub was done in Miami. If Viz cared, they would've paid for a dub themselves instead of letting Primo do it. They do pick-up shows they don't do much with. Genie Family 2020 turns three years old next month. There's allegedly a dub, but it seems like Tsubasa, it might not have been something Viz produced. There's no info on a home video release. It simply got a (late) simulcast, with the sub streams later dumped onto other services. That's a fate I can see this season of Tsubasa getting in the English-speaking world. |

They had a history of overcharging for use of their artists and actors internationally. One of the most known examples was when Funimation had Kodocha in the mid-00s and had to cut the music, references and spoken dialogue of the Johnny's band Tokio out of their DVD releases. Another example was when Sentai licensed Skull Man, they had to replace the opening, also by Tokio, with a trailer in each episode. A list of other examples can be found here. animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=5403396&highlight=#5403396 They have also been a problem in Japan when it came to promoting their people digitally. https://twitter.com/VintageHenshin/status/1401280800541360128 https://twitter.com/kesare_johnnys (<--- plenty of more examples of the above in this account alone) Back to international, some of this changed after the company's founder, Johnny Kitagawa, died in 2019 as confirmed after Discotek announced their rescue of Kodocha in 2020 (both during the announcement stream and after) with the Tokio stuff kept intact. I know Ultraman Tiga's re-release will get brought up like on the linked thread but I think what happened there was that the Ultraman deal with Mill Creek was in the works while Johnny was still alive (it was officially announced the day after his passing) and nobody on Tsuburaya's side bothered to contact them after the management change to fix that which they probably didn't know they could do but they also had two years to try (Mill Creek's Tiga's set was released in October 2021) so we ended up with a replacement song that was produced 9 years ago for most of the show instead of V6's "Take Me Higher" (ignoring the 2 episodes that had it which most fans think was a materials botch). |
